Mystery: Death Singer

Chapter 28 "A Sense of Incompleteness"

"what?"

Edric was completely bewildered. He only remembered that Azik and Klein had a good relationship and that Azik was an extremely powerful Extraordinary who could easily kill "Hurricane Admiral" Ziringus. He never expected that this man would suffer from amnesia just like him.

Azik's slightly melancholic gaze fell upon the library ceiling, and he continued in a calm yet lonely tone:

"I've forgotten a lot of my memories, only remembering my own name and basic knowledge. If I hadn't carried an ID with me, I probably would have become a homeless person."

"Over the years, I have tried to find my parents using my identification documents, but to no avail, even though I have special abilities that allow me to see a glimpse of fate."

"As I got through the first few years, I gradually discovered that I possessed some strange abilities, abilities that went beyond the realm of common sense."

Edric nodded in empathy. He was even more unlucky than Azik. When he woke up with a throbbing headache, he had neither identification nor a penny on him. He was given an experience he would never have had in his previous life—begging.

Recalling what had happened when he first woke up, Edric felt a sense of shared misfortune with Azik and softly asked:

"Besides identification, are there any other clues about your past? For example, the location where you woke up?"

Azik shook his head heavily:

"No, it's as if I took a nap and forgot the past."

He raised his right hand and pinched his brow, as if trying to recall something:

"I woke up in an apartment, a dusty room that had been uninhabited for a long time. I was like an uninvited guest who had suddenly broken in and fallen into a deep sleep due to some accident."

Azik lowered his hand, not wanting to recall those useless memories he had relived over and over again. He turned to Edric and asked in a low voice:

"And you, Edric, have you regained your lost memories?"

Edric opened his mouth, and after a brief silence, he spoke frankly:

"Yes, Mr. Azik, I have also lost many memories, and my recollections of the past are still fragmented."

"However, what I'm more curious about is how you figured out that I had also lost my memory? Uh... I mean, it's really hard to believe."

Azik looked surprised, then explained in a confident tone:

"In my view, you are completely different from everyone else, as if... as if you have been torn apart by something, with a slight sense of incompleteness, which is why I guessed that you, like me, had lost your memories."

What had torn him apart? Edric's pupils constricted sharply, his muscles tensed instantly, and he froze in his seat, motionless.

"Edric, are you alright?" Azik frowned, placed his left hand on Edric's right shoulder, and asked in a low voice.

"hiss--"

Edric gasped, snapping back to reality. His forehead was covered in beads of sweat. He tightly closed his violently shaking eyes, his voice unusually hoarse.

"I...I've remembered something, I need to catch my breath, Mr. Azik."

Azik nodded slightly, understanding Edric's current state quite well, and immediately turned his attention back to the "Study on the Ancient Remains of Mount Hornachis" in his hands.

In the darkness, Edric seemed to hear the rushing water again. He remembered that he had been floating in the river like a corpse for an unknown amount of time before being washed ashore by an accident.

He recalled struggling to his feet from the riverbank, his eyes and posture like those of a wild beast, half-walking, half-crawling into the darkness...

Two or three minutes later, Edric opened his eyes. The throbbing pain in his head had completely subsided. He looked at Azik beside him and forced a smile, saying:

"I suddenly remembered being swept ashore by the river, walking into the darkness like a wild beast..."

"That's normal." Azik nodded slightly, unsurprised. "I often recall memories from the past, some of which are worthless, and others that are very precious but don't help me in my search for the past."

At this point, Azik paused, then shook his head with a wry smile and said:

"I originally told you all this to ask if we had any similarities, but now it seems..."

"Similarities?" Edric's eyes suddenly lit up, and he asked eagerly, "Actually, there are some, Mr. Azik. Don't you recall the specific source of these extraordinary abilities?"

Azik nodded slightly in affirmation.

Just as I expected… Edric’s lips curled into a slight smile. He immediately realized this was the perfect opportunity for him to get closer to Azrael, and said without reservation:

"People like us with extraordinary abilities are called extraordinary beings. Extraordinary abilities come from Sequence Potions. For example, I am Sequence 8 'Gravedigger' of the 'Corpse Collector' pathway."

"I have a feeling that your path is the same as mine, that we are both 'corpse collectors', but I don't know which sequence we are in."

"Sequence potion... Corpse collector..." Azik frowned slightly, his right hand once again touching his forehead, as if recalling something.

After a full five minutes, Azik lowered his hand, a rare look of relaxation in his eyes. He looked at Edric and smiled:

"Thank you, Edric. I've remembered a lot of things from the past, and some memories about Sequence Potions."

"If it weren't for you, I'm afraid it would have taken me a very long time to remember these things."

Edric forced down his lips, which were even harder to suppress than AK's. He knew that from this moment on, as long as he didn't openly storm the churches of the three major churches or actively get involved in the "story," he would no longer need to worry about his personal safety.

Edric struggled to control his facial muscles, and to avoid bursting into laughter, he immediately changed the subject and asked:

"Mr. Azik, have you considered contacting the circle of extraordinary individuals to find clues about the past yourself?"

"Of course I've thought about it, but I've never tried it even once," Azik said with a self-deprecating laugh. "Because I'm afraid of danger, afraid of death."

Upon hearing "fear of death," Edric's eyes glazed over slightly. He suddenly saw two Aziks in front of him, one with a gentle smile on his face and the other with an extremely cold expression.

But when he looked closely, he found that Azik was exactly the same as usual, without any difference, as if everything just now was just an illusion.

For some reason, Edric suddenly recalled a phrase Azik had just used to describe himself:

"...There's a slight sense of incompleteness..."
