I opened a clinic in the Abyss World
Chapter 295 He has too many crimes
Charlotte refused most of the requests for justice, but accepted their petitions and promised to take them to the sheriff's office.
The needs of the lower classes are not that complicated. Now that you have announced new rules and established a new order, they just want to live in accordance with the order and fight for some of their own rights.
However, the privileges of various powerful and wealthy individuals blocked their path to the police station.
The problems don't just involve the Tru family. Among the lawsuits Charlotte received today, three victims' suffering stemmed from the Harriman family, and two bullies who oppressed ordinary people were protected by the Harriman family.
Abducting women, murdering people in the street, and extorting money from the people were not uncommon occurrences in the past.
You only need to be powerful enough to do whatever you want, and the same goes for the clansmen and nobles who are subordinate to the three major families.
But times have changed. The Abyss built a city, established a council and a magistrate's office, and promulgated twenty-three laws. The city lord declared that he would govern the Abyss by law.
A new order was established in what was once a chaotic and disorderly abyss, and the people at the bottom of society had new hope.
However, some powerful figures from the old era did not think this way. They still regarded the lower classes as ants and did whatever they wanted, believing that the law was only used to restrain the lower classes. Their behavior became even more rampant.
"These guys are going too far. They take advantage of their status and do whatever they want. They don't treat people like human beings at all." Lina clenched her fist as she sent the last patient out of the operating room.
"Yes, they snatch other men's wives and daughters, commit murder and robbery, and there's nowhere to seek justice. What are the city lord's mansion and the police station doing?" Amir said angrily.
Charlotte, however, appeared much calmer, saying, "The Elven City's comprehensive laws have been established for over a thousand years, while the Abyss City has only been built for less than a month. This is an inevitable growing pain. It remains to be seen how the three major families will choose this time: will they uphold the Twenty-Three Laws, severely punish criminals, and uphold justice for the common people, or will they continue to protect those scumbags, rendering the Twenty-Three Laws worthless?"
The elves also have a wealth gap and a privileged class, but compared to the chaos and evil in other parts of the Aesop continent, Benjamin protected the elves of the Elf Forest very well. Even though they were bound by high walls, they still maintained their purity to the greatest extent possible.
If they had seen the abyss three months ago, perhaps they wouldn't have been so indignant.
In the Abyss of Judson's time, potions were rampant, and thugs filled the streets. Even a young man like him had to worry about being knocked unconscious and sold whenever he went out.
Now, Lina and her friends can run and exercise on the street early in the morning without worrying about thugs who might suddenly rush out from the fog behind them.
Such changes should be seen and praised.
Charlotte put Anselm on the table and put the Tru family in a difficult position, forcing them to keep moving forward.
He didn't expect the Abyss to reach the level of the Elf Forest, but at least it should aim for Kalva, instilling a sense of awe for the law in everyone. The key was whether the City Lord's Mansion, this violent institution, could guarantee the effective enforcement of the law.
Even though the Medical Association hated him to the core and tried to put him on the gallows, they ultimately only stripped him of his magical essence and expelled him from Kalvar.
Lorenzo stopped Nancy's carriage in Calva but dared not lay a hand on her, yet he acted with impunity in the Abyss, demonstrating the deterrent power of the Calva law.
After lunch, Roland arrived.
"Principal Roland, what brings you here for a visit?" Charlotte greeted Roland with a smile as she ushered him in.
Roland smiled and said, "It's been a while since I last saw you, and I've missed you dearly. I just happened to be passing by today, so I came to see you."
"Alright, speak like a human being." Charlotte pouted, disbelieving.
Roland said, "I'm here for Anselm's case. I want to see the victim and her child. I heard they're with you."
"You've come to plead for Anselm?" Charlotte asked, looking at him.
"Do you think I'm that kind of person?" Roland retorted.
Charlotte knew he wasn't him, so she turned and walked towards the ward next door, knocking on the door.
A moment later, the ward door opened, and Edith looked at Charlotte and said, "Doctor, is something the matter?"
Charlotte stepped aside slightly to make way for Roland behind her, and introduced him to her: "This is Mr. Roland of the Duru family, the son of Lord Joseph of the city."
Upon hearing this, Edith instinctively took half a step back, looking at Roland warily.
Anselm is related to the Duru family by marriage, and the man in front of him is the eldest son of the Duru family.
Roland quickly said gently, "Please don't be afraid. I'm not here to stand up for Anselm or plead for him. The city lord has already ordered a thorough investigation into this matter, and Anselm will receive the punishment he deserves. I'm here today only to express my condolences to you and your child on behalf of the city lord's mansion."
Edith looked at Charlotte.
"Roland is my friend, and he's on your side regarding Anselm's situation, which is why I let him in," Charlotte nodded.
Edith's expression relaxed slightly upon hearing this, and she then fully opened the door.
Roland entered the ward. The small white room contained only a hospital bed, where a little boy was half-lying, looking at a picture book. He looked up when he heard the sound.
Upon seeing the stranger, little Norman's eyes showed a hint of fear. He looked at Edith and asked, "Mother, who is he?"
"He..." Edith didn't know how to introduce Roland for a moment. These past two days, little Norman had been waking up in fright from his dreams, and the experience that day had given him quite a fright.
"I am Roland, the principal of Abyss Academy. You must be little Norman. I've heard you're a very brave and studious child, and it seems the rumors are true." Roland walked to the bedside with a smile and spoke softly to little Norman.
"The headmaster of Abyss Academy?" The fear in Norman's eyes faded, replaced by curiosity.
Edith looked at him with some surprise. She had heard of Abyss Academy, which was newly established this year and was said to be located on Towa Street. Given their family's circumstances, they naturally couldn't afford to send her there, but she didn't expect that this Mr. Roland would be the principal.
Roland smiled and nodded: "That's right. Once you've recovered from your injury, come to the academy for classes. There are many children your age there, and teachers will teach you to recognize words and learn skills."
"Really?" Norman's eyes lit up as he stared intently at Roland.
Edith was also somewhat moved. She would be more than happy to let Norman attend classes at the academy, but why was Roland so kind to them?
"Of course it's true. As the principal, I would never lie to a child." Roland nodded firmly, then looked at Edith beside him. "Ms. Edith, once little Norman's injuries have healed, bring him to Abyss Academy on Towa Street to find me. I will arrange for him to enroll for free."
"This..." Edith glanced at Charlotte subconsciously.
Charlotte nodded: "It's great. The teachers at Abyss Academy are all brought back from Kalva. The children can learn a lot there."
He hadn't expected Roland to directly invite Norman to enroll in Abyss Academy, but for a school-aged child like Norman, it was a rare opportunity.
Edith nodded quickly upon hearing this, and looked at Roland gratefully, saying, "Thank you, Principal Roland."
"Don't mention it, Norman is a good boy," Roland said with a smile, then gently lifted Norman's left hand. "Come, let me see your injury."
Norman had completely let down his guard and fear of Roland, and cooperatively showed him the wounds on his hands and shoulders.
"What a bastard!" Roland couldn't help but mutter a curse when he saw the stitched scar that snaked around Norman's left hand like a centipede and the scar that almost ran across his chest.
As a doctor, he knew all too well how horrific the injury was.
Of course, Charlotte's medical skills also surprised him somewhat.
Norman's hand was bitten off by a dog and was completely severed. Even Roland might not be able to fully restore his hand; it would require extremely skilled healing techniques.
Charlotte managed to reattach his hand through surgery and restore some of its mobility!
This was completely beyond Roland's expectations. One of the main reasons he came to visit little Norman today was because he was worried about his hand being amputated and wanted to see if he could do something for him.
In retrospect, such worries were completely unnecessary.
His scar looks frightening, but as long as his hand's mobility is not impaired, a scar removal procedure can easily remove the scar once the hand has healed.
There's no rush to do that now. This scar is evidence of Anselm's crimes, and nothing is more convincing than such a horrific scar on a five-year-old child.
"Little Norman likes picture books, right? Then I'll give you a few picture books as a gift. I'll come see you again in a few days." Roland took out three illustrated picture books from his spatial ring and placed them on Norman's bedside table.
Little Norman's eyes lit up as he looked at Roland gratefully and said, "Thank you, Headmaster."
"You're welcome." Roland smiled, patted his head, nodded slightly to Edith, and then left the ward with Charlotte.
"You did the right thing. A beast like Anselm should be hanged." Roland couldn't help but mutter curses as he left the ward.
Charlotte glanced at him with some surprise. This young master was usually very refined and not good at swearing. She smiled and asked, "Has your family already made a decision? Is there no resistance to taking on Anselm?"
Roland shook his head slightly: "The resistance is not small. Kenneth pulled the Grand Elder and tried to protect Sam, but my father has made up his mind to deal with him, to give the people of Margo Street justice, and to give all the residents of the Abyss an explanation."
Charlotte pondered this, as it was similar to what he had heard: the Duru family had split due to the Anselm incident, but fortunately, Joseph and Roland were on the side of upholding justice.
"There's another piece of news I just heard this morning." Roland led Charlotte a few steps toward the door, away from the ward, and whispered, "Today, a wicked servant confessed to a crime: Edith's husband, Grover, didn't die in a wilderness hunt, but was killed by Anselm's wicked servants. His body was buried in the grove behind Anselm's house. This morning, eighteen bodies were dug up from that grove, but the news hasn't been released yet."
"That bastard!" Charlotte's temper flared up instantly upon hearing this.
In order to possess Edith, Anselm ordered his wicked servants to kill her husband and then set dogs on a rampage that nearly killed her son. His actions were extremely vicious.
The eighteen bodies dug out of the woods were mostly innocent neighbors who had died tragically at his hands over the years.
"This evidence is enough to get Anselm hanged ten times over. The police station is currently compiling a list of victims and identifying the bodies. This will take some time before Anselm is put on trial." Roland glanced towards the hospital room. "When do you think it would be appropriate to inform her of this?"
Charlotte pondered for a moment and said, "Let's inform her when Anselm's guilt is fully proven and he is about to go to trial."
Roland nodded slightly.
dong dong!
Just then, there was a knock on the door.
Charlotte went to open the door, and standing there was Diana.
"Roland, what are you doing here?" Diana's gaze passed over Charlotte and landed on Roland, who was standing in the clinic, and she asked with a hint of surprise.
"I've come to see Edith and Norman on behalf of the City Lord's Mansion," Roland explained.
"Is there any news about Melba?" Charlotte asked. Diana's personal visit to the clinic meant there was probably news.
"That's right, I was just about to take you to catch someone dirty." Diana nodded slightly, then looked at Roland, "Since Roland is here too, would you like to come and be a witness?"
"Who are you arresting?" Roland looked at her, puzzled.
"Swa," Diana said.
"Swa?!" Roland exclaimed in surprise, "On what charge were you arrested?"
Diana smiled and said, "Murder, stealing a wife, abusing a young girl—he has too many crimes to list. Which one do you think is appropriate to arrest him on?"
Roland looked at Charlotte and said, "Another patient has come to you to complain?"
Charlotte nodded: "That's right. An old man, his son was killed by Sva, his daughter-in-law was forcibly taken by Sva, and when the old man went to the police station to complain, he had his leg broken. Don't you think that's unfair?"
Roland frowned upon hearing this, and said angrily, "I knew Sva wasn't a good person, but I never expected him to be such a scoundrel!"
"Let's go. The later we go, the more dangerous it will be for Melba. Given the current situation in the Abyss, he might be silenced," Diana urged, glancing at Roland. "If you want to come along, take my carriage to avoid alerting them."
"I'll go," Roland nodded immediately.
The three boarded an old carriage without any badges or markings, and Buddy, wearing a tattered gray hat, drove it away from Bacca Street.
"Sva bought a house on Guate Street, and Melba is being held there. He should still be alive. He comes to that house every afternoon recently. Today, we'll lie in wait, catch him red-handed, and take him straight to the police station," Diana explained to the two men in the carriage.
Roland laughed and said, "Alden is going to stand up for Anselm. If Sva is arrested, he will definitely be furious. Sva is his most beloved grandson, and he might even try to take him away."
"If that old bastard Alden dares to try and snatch someone from the police station, I won't let him get away with it. I'll arrest him too," Diana sneered. "Swa's arrogant and domineering behavior is inseparable from Alden's pampering."
Roland nodded: "If we catch them red-handed, I will immediately go back and discuss it with my father. The city lord's mansion will absolutely not tolerate this."
Diana looked at him, smiled, and said, "This time, Charlotte and I have handed you a sharp knife. Whether you can cut off this cancerous tumor depends on you."
"The risks are considerable, but since things have already started, we have no choice but to grit our teeth and move forward." Roland's face became more serious.
"The Duru family isn't the only one with a malignant tumor." Charlotte pulled out a stack of petitions detailing the injustices from her pocket and handed them to Diana.
As Diana flipped through the indictments, the smile on her face gradually disappeared, replaced by anger and murderous intent in her eyes.
The smile didn't completely disappear; it just shifted to part of Roland's face.
Like the Duru family, the Harriman family is a large family that has been entrenched in the Abyss for hundreds of years. With many collateral branches, it is inevitable that some scoundrels will emerge from the family.
Before the Abyss was built, there were no laws to regulate their behavior. As long as they didn't do anything that would anger both heaven and man and cause them to lose face, no one cared.
Things are different now. We have Article 23 of the law, as well as police stations and prisons.
These people did not stop their behavior, which is why Diana has this stack of lawsuits in her hands.
"These belong to your Duru family, you can handle them yourself." Diana handed four lawsuits to Roland, folded up the remaining ones, and looked at Charlotte, saying, "I will deal with them all within three days. Those who should be sent to the police station will be sent to the police station, and those who should be hanged will be hanged. There will be no leniency."
"Okay, I will relay what they said to the victims." Charlotte nodded.
Roland put away the four sheets of paper and said, "The city lord's mansion will not tolerate these people, but we need to resolve the issues of Zeansem and Sva first before we can move forward with other cases."
Charlotte nodded, noting that each family's situation was different, and the Tru family clearly faced greater resistance to internal reform.
Before long, the carriage stopped at the back door of a room.
The three of them got off the carriage and, led by Diana, quickly entered the gate.
"Sva's courtyard is right next door. It's not a big courtyard, about 200 square meters. There are four guards and two rooms. One of them is adjacent to this house. I've thinned the wall and drilled a peephole so we can directly observe the room next door." Diana led the two of them into the house and headed straight for the room on the left.
"You're just chipping away at the wall, can't the other side hear you?" Charlotte asked, puzzled. Even if Sva didn't live here, weren't there still four guards?
Diana laughed and said, "Isn't this the kind of one-way silence spell that's used in situations like this? But they're just a few level-two orc guards; they're not that perceptive."
As she spoke, she led the two of them into a room.
A hole, more than a meter wide and two meters high, was drilled in one wall of the house, like a door, and stones were piled up on the other side of the room.
The wall wasn't completely dug through, but three small holes were made and simply covered up.
Diana said, "The next room is where Sva used to imprison the victims; Melba was imprisoned there. The other room is the guards' quarters. Sva doesn't usually live here."
Charlotte stepped forward and looked through a small hole.
