Chapter 56 The Headless Horseman
The giant black bird with a human face is probably a monster native to the swamp. Vitas had never heard of it before, but that's normal, there are too many unexplored and undiscovered places on the continent.
He looked up at the blackbird.
Leon is dead.
Oh shit.
What should we do now?
Vitas knew perfectly well that Leon's body should be taken back; it was basic courtesy.
Blackbird's pale face turned around, then turned back, as if mocking him.
That beast couldn't possibly have such wisdom, absolutely not.
Vitas tried to calm himself down, if he were to be consumed by anger...
His eyes turned fierce, and he raised his sword, summoning the best archer in the Knights of Sin.
Give me your bow and arrows.
In fact, Vitas didn't need to say anything; he only needed to extend his hand for his subordinates to understand his meaning.
Vitas took the longbow and arrow from the dead man's hands and drew it effortlessly.
What was the reason for his anger? Was it because he hadn't protected Leon? Or was it because of the loss of someone he could call a friend?
Vitas had a more realistic reason in mind, but he was also more unwilling to admit it.
Because he found himself secretly pleased that the secret wouldn't be revealed.
Damn it, how could I have thought like that?
Vitas drew his bow to its fullest extent, and as he released it, the arrow flew out with a whoosh.
Although he was a knight, Vitas's archery skills were in no way inferior to his swordsmanship. It was only natural that he could hit the giant black bird less than a hundred meters away.
However, without any warning, the blackbird flapped its wings, its massive body soaring into the air, and the arrow pierced through its feathers.
"So, the reason you look so huge, monster, is because you're all feathers. If you removed the feathers, how many parts of your body would you still have?"
His subordinate presented him with another arrow, which Vitas took and prepared to shoot. However, the large black bird had already taken flight, dodging and weaving with a speed far exceeding Vitas's expectations.
"Ha, what an unexpected enemy."
Vitas drew his bow, ready to fire, when at that moment, the large black bird spoke.
"Hahahaha, Vitas, Vitas, messenger of fate, terminator of arcane magic..."
Vitas frowned; the strange sound made him very uncomfortable.
The blackbird flapped its wings again, becoming a tiny black dot in the sky, and it continued to shrink.
What kind of monster is that? Why can it fly so high?
Vitas had no more time to think. He ordered his men to clean up Leon's body. Now that things had come to this, all he could do was hope that Declan knew a wizard who could bring the dead back to life.
He turned to leave, but at that moment, a strange sound came from the swamp, frantically approaching along the water's surface.
"ha?"
He saw a white horse galloping towards him, leaping across the water.
On the back of the steed, a knight in white armor stood proudly.
"No head?"
Vitas had heard such rumors, about the headless horseman wandering in the shadows, and wondered why it had come here.
The headless horseman stopped about fifty meters away from Vitas, holding a spear in its hand, and then aimed it at the head in the hand of one of Vitas's subordinates.
"Oh? You want a new brain? Interesting."
Vitas summoned more undead minions.
"But please forgive me, I refuse. I will not hand over my friend's head to a monster."
Vitas saw the headless horseman's body tremble, then it took off its gloves and threw them on the ground.
This was the first time Vitas had ever seen such a monster, such a creature. Was it a creation of magic? Or did it arise naturally? Did the Headless Horseman also chase after a new head?
Vitas laughed heartily. He was in a bad mood and wanted to fight to relieve his frustration. Since this monster had come up to him so rudely, he might as well train a little!
The scout quickly went over and picked up the gloves, presenting them to Vitas with both hands, who calmly picked them up.
Then, the headless horseman dismounted, and Vitas waved his hand, ordering his men to disperse. Then, a painful roar was heard.
"Mount up, knight. Although this is a swamp, we should fight like knights."
Amidst the raging flames, a black horse draped in flames emerged from the water.
"Old buddy, long time no see."
Vitas's lips curled into a slight smile. This horse had grown up alongside him, fought alongside him, and survived that most horrific death together. He longed to fight alongside it again, but he could never find the right opportunity.
The scene is so ridiculous: a living man and a dead horse, a dead man and a living horse.
"bring it on."
Vitas needs to release his emotions and vent his anger through battle.
The headless horseman understood Vitas's meaning; he mounted his horse, his lance already raised.
"A duel with lances? Sure."
Vitas reached out, and one of his subordinates presented him with a flaming lance from hell.
The two stood facing each other, then retreated 100 meters, and when they were about 300 meters apart, they stopped at the same time and stared at each other.
Then, Vitas raised his lance high, then laid it flat, and his undead steed began to run.
The headless horseman started moving at the same time, and the two charged forward with an unstoppable momentum, horse against horse and spear against spear.
Vitas saw its severed neck, devoid of any blood, as if all the blood had long since drained away, leaving only a swollen, grotesque body.
Vitas and the Headless Horseman were both fine-tuning their directions, and at the very end of their charge, they brushed past each other and collided.
Vitas deflected the headless horseman's lance, but Vitas stabbed him, sending him flying into the air, while his white horse continued galloping forward.
Vitas raised his gun with one hand and then forcefully impaled the headless knight in the water.
"Looks like I won."
Vitas put away his gun, and the white horse rushed back.
The headless horseman grabbed his horse and mounted it.
"Shall we continue?"
He saw the headless horseman's shoulders sway, and then, without any indication, it turned and left.
The mist began to spread as the headless horseman turned around. Vitas sensed something was wrong, and more and more of his subordinates gathered, making the mist thicker and thicker.
Watching the white horse and white clothes disappear into the mist, the mist soon dissipated, and the headless horseman was also gone.
"That's strange, who exactly is this guy?"
Vitas gently stroked his beloved horse.
"But it doesn't matter, let's walk together for a while."
