Chapter 54 The Fall of the Unicorn
The nights in Moonlight Forest are when unicorns roam. Fortunately, with the help of Declan, Vitas would not have been able to reach Moonlight Forest in such a short time.
For Vitas, hunting rare and exotic creatures was nothing new. He had already spent far too much time hunting such rare and exotic animals when he was with the Knights of Sin.
Although no one had ever hunted a unicorn, everyone at that time hoped that one day they could catch one of these legendary monsters.
However, he had already made it through. Even though none of his companions were by his side, they could return from hell at any time. Even though they were soulless bodies, they still gave Vitas a sense of warmth in some way.
The magical light behind Vitas gradually weakened, and his gaze swept across the surrounding forest.
Unlike the ordinary forests outside Ortham, the trees in Moonlight Forest are taller and denser, with secondary vines and small plants growing wildly on them, spreading from one tree to another, repeatedly, eventually becoming a magnificent and complex plant world.
Glowing berries were everywhere. Vitas was very familiar with them. When he was a child, many people on his family's land grew these berries. They used them as food, snacks, and commodities, forming an integral part of the lives of the Vitalis family and all those loyal to the family.
Vitas is currently in the Moonlight Forest, which is located at the border between his homeland, the Levin Alliance, and the Kingdom of Granson.
According to his memory, this place is less than three months away from his hometown.
This is the first time I've been so close to my hometown since I left it.
However, he was a sinner, expelled from his family. If he went back, his father would bring his knights and give him a serious fight.
Vitas was confident that he could win.
The recollection ended, and he stepped into the forest.
This was not a smart decision. There was no prior preparation, no intelligence gathering, and they didn't even know how many guards were on this side.
Vitas didn't like this kind of battle. His ideal battle should be one where everyone is honest with each other and crushes each other with their own strength. That's what battle should be like, not one where wizards float in the air and release countless large-scale, lethal spells to kill countless people.
Vitas continued onward, the Moonlight Forest's terrain complex, the lush vegetation concealing its varied forms, and soon, he lost contact with Declan.
This was already the limit of Declan's communication spell. He also needed to maintain the teleportation array so that Vitas wouldn't have to travel thousands of kilometers back to the Duchy of Vilan after completing his mission.
Vitas is still moving forward.
Unicorns are not as docile as they are in fairy tales. Their bodies are only about the size of an ordinary horse, but their speed, strength, and even defense are top-notch.
If it weren't for its extremely violent and untamable nature, the unicorn would be the best war mount.
Vitas recalled his knowledge about unicorns.
They tend to act alone, have their own small groups, and are carnivorous. Humans often misjudge their threat due to their pure and beautiful appearance, leading to them being killed.
Vitas continued forward, venturing deeper into the darkness. The roars of the monsters intensified, making the sound of Vitas's armored figure moving forward seem insignificant.
After walking for several hours, Vitas felt he was almost there.
Unicorns are not particularly rare; they just live in unique areas, found in several other distinctive forests besides Moonlight Forest.
Vitas eventually found one; in the distance, he saw a unicorn beside a pool of water.
It was similar to an ordinary horse, but looked more ferocious and powerful, with a spiral spike on its head that was longer than a human arm.
The spike itself was an incredibly sharp weapon, and Vitas wasn't even sure if his armor could withstand it.
He looked around to make sure no one else was nearby. The rarity and value of unicorns often attract more people to capture them. However, this capture eventually disappears as their uses diminish.
Unicorns are numerous, difficult to hunt, and their meat is not tasty. After people's initial vanity was satisfied, fewer and fewer people became curious about unicorns.
Ultimately, only a select few top wizards would seek out unicorn horns.
The awkward thing is that wizards' spellcasting materials are not disposable; if properly preserved, wizard materials can be used indefinitely.
This has led to wizards accumulating more and more unicorn horns over the long years. Only when top wizards' spells become increasingly demanding, requiring higher and higher standards for unicorn horns, will there be a demand.
However, the fact that Declan doesn't specify the angles makes things much easier.
Vitas confirmed that there were not many threats around, and since he didn't have much information at the moment, he had better go all out from the very beginning to increase the success rate of the hunt.
Vitas drew his sword and looked at it with a sense of nostalgia.
"Gentlemen, let's hunt unicorns together now."
He summoned three hundred Knights of Sin, who surrounded Vitas and obeyed his commands.
Unfortunately, they were in a forest. If it were a plain, Vitas would have been happy to have his companions appear on horseback.
He commanded his soulless companions to surround all nearby paths. Due to the unicorn's size, they could only traverse the dense forest using fixed routes.
Once the blockade is blocked, it can be easily taken down.
Vitas watched as his companions eventually surrounded all possible entrances and exits around the pool, ready to charge out at his command.
Vitas took a deep breath; the pain from the summoning could only be somewhat relieved by fighting.
"That's enough, let's go."
Vitas charged down, the executioner close behind, and the unicorn, startled, roared.
There's not much to say about this battle; with such overwhelming numbers, the unicorn's demise was inevitable. And those who surrounded it were all undead, spirits who could not die again.
Its proud horns can pierce these undead, but they will continue to attack even after being pierced.
In the end, under the siege of the undead, the unicorn was severely wounded.
"It's simpler than I imagined."
As Vitas spoke, he used his sword to sever the unicorn's head.
"Anyway, the first task is complete. Now let's go back to Declan."
