Chapter 6 Night Operation

Fifteen minutes later, the group arrived at Los's hunting lodge.

There are two main types of trees in the northern forests: cedars and fairy trees.

The Elf Tree is a blessing from the nature goddess Iria to the Elf race; wherever Elves settle and live, an Elf Tree will grow.

The more elves there are, the more elf trees there are; the higher the happiness level of the elves, the taller and bigger the elf trees grow.

The main characteristics of the Fairy Tree are that its main trunk grows in a multi-trunked spiral, with many thick branches and lush foliage, forming a canopy that blocks out the sun.

Los's hunting lodge is built on a 30-meter-tall elf tree.

Lorne, with his [Swiftness] ability, easily climbed the tree trunk like an antelope scaling a cliff and was the first to enter the treehouse.

The treehouse was less than 10 square meters. Many herbal sachets for repelling snakes and insects were hanging on the walls and ceiling. The floor was also covered with a carpet of the same herbs and animal hides. A locked long wooden box was placed against the wall at the far end.

Los was the second to climb up. Once inside, he took out a key from an inconspicuous hidden compartment and opened the wooden box.

The wooden box contained three unstrung bows, three quivers of arrows, several slings, several skinning knives, and some bottles and jars.

These things will come in very handy in the fierce battles to come.

Seeing that there were only three sets of bows and arrows, Lorne thought for a moment and said to the three of them, "You can use the bows and arrows, and these props too."

"And what about you?" the village chief asked.

"I'll use an orc's axe, or I don't have to," Lorne said, and left the treehouse first.

He came to the ground, picked up the orc axe that the two of them had left under the tree to make it easier to climb, and stared at it to check the item information.

Lorne raised an eyebrow slightly. He currently had a Physique of 16, meaning his Strength, Agility, and Constitution were all 16, so there was no attribute penalty, but the proficiency penalty was a bit high.

Don't martial artists get a weapon proficiency bonus?

The moment the thought crossed my mind, the system gave me a reply:

[Except for specific profession characteristics, this system does not offer one-click acquisition of [skills] or [expertise]. Please strive for self-improvement and stop thinking about cheating.]

Alright, since the attributes are high, leveling up should be quick.

Lorne shrugged indifferently and began practicing swinging the orcish heavy axe.

Cramming at the last minute is pointless, since I'm just killing time anyway.

After swinging the bow about twenty or thirty times, the other three came down from the treehouse. Each of them carried a strung bow on their back, a quiver hanging on the right side of their belt, and a simple prop bag made from a bag of insect-repelling herbs tied to the back of their belt.

All elves who hunt in the jungle know that carrying a quiver on your back means that arrows will fall everywhere when you run and jump.

The three were all surprised to see Lorne wield the heavy orc axe with one hand.

"Little Lorne, is your strength also a gift from the goddess?" the village chief asked.

"Yes," Lorne replied casually. Since he'd already been blackmailed, he might as well take advantage of the situation.

Upon hearing this, the three were first surprised, then delighted.

In fact, even though the goddess had given a divine decree, they were still unsure about saving the village.

Because in this world, if gods interfere too much in mortal affairs, it will cause "divine chaos" or even "divine disaster".

Therefore, the gods are very restrained in bestowing blessings upon mortals, usually keeping the success rate of events to around 30%.

In other words, although the oracle said that Lorne would lead the three to save the village, it only turned the "impossible" into a "30% chance." Whether it would ultimately succeed depended on the efforts of the mortals themselves.

But now it seems that the goddess has a special fondness for Lorne, and is just short of saying in the oracle, "This child is my chosen one."

But no matter how you look at it, this is a good thing.

As for whether such excessive pampering of a mortal might cause divine chaos, that's not something these mortals are qualified to consider.

All they need to consider now is how to save their people from the brutal orcs.

"Shall we set off now?" the village chief asked Lorne.

"No." Lorne stopped swinging his sword, looked up at the sky, and stated his plan:

"We set off at dusk, using the cover of night to sneak into the village, first quietly rescue our people, and then consider our next steps."

Although his predecessor's memories of that attack were quite chaotic, Lorne could still tell that the number of orcs occupying the village at this moment was about 20.

Therefore, launching a frontal attack would be very unwise. If the orcs take the captured elves hostage, the rescue plan will become very passive.

"Okay, let's do it that way." The village chief immediately agreed, his eyes filled with admiration as he looked at Lorne.

Lorian seemed to be beginning to understand why the goddess doted on this newly adult moon elf.

This child possesses a maturity and intelligence far exceeding that of other children his age.

Was it this ordeal that transformed him?

Perhaps this child will become a legend in the future, and everything he is suffering now is a trial given to him by fate.

The only regret is that I may never see that innocent, lively and adorable little Lorne again.

The village chief prayed silently in his heart:

May the goddess bless this unfortunate child.

……

As the moon was about to rise above the treetops, the four elves arrived at the jungle near the village.

Lorne gestured for them to stop, and the other three immediately and silently disappeared into the shadows of nearby trees.

Lorne concealed one of the orcish heavy axes on the spot, then, carrying the other heavy axe in one hand, crept forward several meters alone. He raised his hand and parted the dense vegetation blocking his way to create a small gap and observe the situation in the village.

Located about 50 meters from the village, Lorne could easily see the situation inside the village by the bright moonlight.

The good news is that the 16 captured elves are all in the central square of the village, locked in four large wooden cages made of logs and vines, still wearing the moon-white cotton clothes they wore when they attended Lorne's coming-of-age ceremony.

The bad news is that the orcs have lit three campfires around the square and are currently cooking dinner, feeding themselves with milk-producing sheep and egg-laying chickens from the village.

Lorne focused his gaze on the nearest orc, whose head quickly displayed the following information: [Level -2 Orc, 60/60.]

Lorne silently noted it down, then looked at another one: [Level 1 Orc, 60/60.]

A moment later, Lorne quietly crept back to the village chief and the others, and said in a low voice:

"There are 21 orcs in total, including 5 professionals, 3 warriors, 2 barbarians, and 2 dire wolves."

The three were slightly taken aback, their first reaction being curiosity about how Lorne knew so much about how many professionals there were and what their professions were.

Before the three could ask any questions, Lorne added, "The goddess told me."

The three of them suddenly realized and immediately nodded.

Lorne continued, "They're eating, a lot of food. Let's wait until they're full and start resting before we move out to take their shifts."

Elves can rest through meditation, and they can get enough sleep by meditating for just 4 hours a day, so they are not afraid of waiting.

But orcs are different; the longer it goes on, the sleepier they become.

……

As the moon rose above the treetops, Lorne, who had been secretly scouting, finally witnessed the orcs' first changing of the guard.

The previous batch of orcs on guard duty were drowsy, and the new batch of orcs who had just taken over were not fully awake yet, which was when their alertness was at its lowest.

There are only 6 orcs and one warrior in the square right now, which is when vigilance is at its weakest.

Lorne made a decisive decision to act.

"I'll sneak in to rescue them, you guys prepare to cover me." Lorne briefly explained the plan that they had already discussed.

The three behind him immediately nodded, silently stealthily moved to their respective best shooting positions, quietly drew an arrow from their quiver, and then wedged the bowstring into the end of one of the arrows, ready to provide long-range support to Lorne at any time.

This is a special archery technique. When the elves begin to shoot, they pull back the hand holding the arrow and push forward the hand holding the bow. In the process, they quickly aim at the target and shoot the arrow. Then they quickly return the bow to the starting position and shoot a second arrow with both hands.

It is said that master-level rangers can use this method to fire 15 arrows in 6 seconds with perfect accuracy.
