Chapter 39 The Snow Elf's Dark History
When Lorne reached the village entrance, four snow elves were taking turns on guard duty. Two of them were standing on the 3-meter-high rough stone wall, while the other two were warming themselves by a fire at the foot of the wall, with some tools placed beside the fire.
Clearly, after the Frost Ogre made some simple repairs to the village gate, the Snow Elf reinforced it further.
The two snow elves, who were warming themselves by the fire, saw the two-headed ogre approaching and immediately stood up, instinctively gripping their weapons.
Although they knew that Gogumok was dead and that the two-headed ogre before them was Lord Lorne, their bodies still reacted instinctively.
Lorne immediately switched back to his original body, braving the cold, and said, "It is I, Lorne."
The snow elves quickly relaxed, their faces showing genuine respect.
"Lorne Mian—Comrade, what brings you here?" the leading snow elf asked with a smile.
"I've rested enough, I'm here to relieve you. You've worked hard on your guard duty, go back and rest now, so you'll have the energy to cross the snow mountain tomorrow." Lorne said, walking to the campfire and stretching out his hands to warm himself.
The leading snow elf hurriedly waved her hand: "How can this be? How can we let you stand guard?"
"I'm not injured or sick, so why can't I stand guard?" Lorne retorted.
"But you are—." The snow elf tried to explain, but Lorne interrupted her:
"What is it? Commander, Chosen One, or Your Majesty?"
The snow elf pursed his lips, knowing that his thoughts had displeased Lorne.
Lorne looked at the other three younger snow elves and asked, "What do you think I am?"
"We're comrades!" one of the snow elves immediately shouted.
"Very good." Lorne nodded in satisfaction, then asked, "What is a comrade?"
"All those who fight wholeheartedly for Senesion are comrades!" said the second young snow elf.
"Anything else?" Lorne asked again.
"There is no distinction between high and low, noble and lowly among comrades!" said the third young snow elf.
Lorne smiled and nodded, looking at the older snow elf: "May I stand guard now?"
"Yes, yes, that's fine." The older snow elf quickly nodded, looking ashamed.
"Then why don't you all go and rest?" Lorne said, feigning displeasure.
"Yes!" The older snow elf hurriedly packed up her tools and prepared to leave.
The two snow sprites on the wall quickly descended, waiting to leave with their companions.
After the older snow elf finished packing, she said to Lorne, "Lorne-mian—comrade, we're leaving."
Lorne snapped to attention and gave a military salute.
Upon seeing this, the four snow elves quickly returned the greeting in the same manner: "May the goddess bless the elves."
May the goddess bless the elves.
After the four snow elves left, Lorne immediately switched back to his two-headed ogre body and then comfortably shrugged his shoulders.
"Phew, this is still the warmest."
He pushed the four elf stools together, plopped down on them, grabbed a handful of firewood, and threw it into the campfire.
Just as he had gotten the fire going a little hotter, a voice suddenly came from behind him: "Comrade Lorne."
Lorne was startled and turned around to see the elderly snow elf, who had returned alone.
Good heavens, how come this guy walks so silently? It's terrifying!
"What's wrong?" Lorne asked curiously, feigning nonchalance.
The older snow elf took a deep breath, as if making up her mind, and said, "I want to talk to you—no, I have some questions I'd like to ask you."
Lorne rolled his eyes inwardly, switched back into his moon elf body, took out a stool that had been monopolized by the ogre, placed it in front of the other person, and asked, "If I remember correctly, your name is Selvin, right?"
The older snow elf paused slightly, then widened her eyes in surprise: "You remember my name?"
During the toasts at the banquet earlier, Lorne had asked all the snow elves for their names, but Selvin hadn't expected that this chosen one would actually remember them.
"Remembering a name shouldn't be too hard," Lorne said nonchalantly, patting the stool. "Sit down and let's talk."
"Okay." Selvin sat down next to Lorne, but did not start a conversation immediately.
Lorne knew he was organizing his thoughts, so he continued adding firewood to the campfire, waiting for him to speak.
I wish I could become a frost ogre! This moon elf's tiny body is so fragile and can't withstand the cold.
Just as Lorne was frantically adding fuel to the fire to warm up, Selvin suddenly spoke up:
"You know that we snow elves have the bloodline of the Frost Titans, right?"
"Yes, I know." Lorne nodded.
Selvin continued, "When I was very young, my father told me that in the Wasteland Era, the Snow Elves were enslaved by the Frost Giants. When the Frost Giants invaded and slaughtered other elven races, our ancestors were accomplices."
Lorne's heart skipped a beat, and he almost dropped the firewood in his hand.
Good heavens, so the Snow Fairy has such a dark history.
No, you're asking me this kind of question. You might as well put me on a fire to roast; at least that would keep me warm.
I told you you shouldn't accept the title of God's Chosen. See, karma's coming your way!
Lorne was internally ranting, but outwardly remained calm and continued adding fuel to the fire.
At that moment, he suddenly felt that it was nice to be in cold weather. With his face frozen, he could relax his facial expressions.
Seeing that Lorne did not answer, Selvin assumed that he had not expressed himself clearly enough, so he continued:
"The benevolent Seven Gods of Creation gave the Snow Elves a chance to reform themselves in the new era, allowing us to rejoin the Elf family."
"To atone for the sins committed by their ancestors, the Snow Elves swore an oath to the Seven Gods to live their entire lives in the bitter cold lands, guarding the other elves against the invasion of the Frost Giants."
"From a young age, my elders told me that this was a vow more important than life and soul, and that it must never be broken."
The Saine universe has gone through seven eras since its birth.
In order, they are the 'Primordial Era', the 'Turbulent Era', the 'Prosperous Era', the 'Peak Era', the 'Chaotic Era', the 'Wasteland Era', and the current 'New Era'.
Lorne slowed his pace of adding firewood. He had a rough idea of Selvin's inner conflict and struggle, but he wasn't sure if he was right, so he continued to play the deep thinker.
Selvin stared at Lorne for a few seconds, and seeing that he still didn't speak, he continued:
"The village chief said that you are the chosen one, and your words are the will of the goddess, but I... still... want to confirm with you."
Upon hearing this, Lorne frowned slightly. He felt that this wasn't the real problem troubling Selvin.
But he also knew that he couldn't get the other person to open up completely by just pretending to be deep and mysterious.
So he threw the last piece of firewood into the fire, gently rubbed the ash off his hands, and said:
"Are you worried that this trip down the mountain will break your vow to the Snow Elves and bring punishment upon the entire village from the goddess?"
"Yes, yes." Selvin nodded, his hands resting on his thighs fidgeting nervously.
Lorne noticed the other person's subtle movements, sighed softly, and said, "What would you do if I told you that my coming here wasn't the goddess's will?"
Selvin's body stiffened for a moment, his eyes first filled with confusion, then gradually filled with panic.
Lorne said in a deep voice, "If there were no goddess, and no oath, given the current situation, would you choose to stay on the mountain, or go down and join your fellow elves to defend the fortress and resist the orcish invasion?"
Upon hearing this, Selvin's eyes widened in horror.
What if there were no goddesses?
He couldn't understand why His Highness Lorne, the chosen one of God, would utter such rebellious words.
