Chapter 15 Shadow Guard
After adding the points, Lorne unfolded his mental network, preparing to test it on Nelly beside him first.
"Nellie." After connecting Nelie to his mental network, Lorne called out to her in his mind.
Nelly, who was engrossed in showing off her food, suddenly snapped to attention, paused for two seconds, and then replied blankly via her phone: "Mom?"
"It's me, Lorne. Can't you recognize my voice?"
Nelly looked at Lorne with a puzzled expression. Her lips were shiny with oil, and there was a white crumb of steamed bun stuck to the corner of her mouth.
Lorne tried to ignore the crumb of the bun and gave Nelly a kind smile.
However, Nelly suddenly stared at Lorne warily: "Why are you mimicking your mother's voice?"
Lorne: ? ? ?
"So this is how you communicate with the Goddess of Darkness?" Lorne asked, voicing his suspicions.
"I'm not telling you." Nelly continued to show off her food while looking down.
Lorne was speechless for a moment, then thought for a moment and said, "It was Mother Iluvia who taught me to talk like that."
Sure enough, Nelly's words piqued her interest.
She stopped showing off her food, her cheeks puffed out like a little hamster, and turned her head to look at Lorne curiously, asking earnestly, "Are you the child of Mother Moon?"
"Yeah, wasn't it her who asked you to join me before?" Lorne kept smiling, trying not to notice the crumb of steamed bun on the other person's lips.
Nelly tilted her head slightly, thought for a moment, and then her eyes suddenly lit up: "Then are you Nelly's brother?"
The seven goddesses of creation are like sisters, and if both elves call the goddess "Mom," they can indeed address each other as brother and sister.
"I'm older than you, I'm the older brother," Lorne corrected.
Nelly thought for a moment and asked, "Then will you give Nelly lots and lots and lots and lots of food?"
"Of course." Lorne smiled and nodded. He thought to himself, "I'm a chosen one now, why would I care about a few bites of food?"
Upon hearing this, Nelly's eyes immediately shifted to the two grilled sausages on Lorne's plate.
Lorne's smile twitched slightly, but he still placed a sausage in Nelly's bowl, comforting himself at the same time:
What bad intentions could Little Nelly possibly have? She's just craving your sausage.
As soon as the sausage was put into the bowl, Nelly immediately picked it up with her chopsticks and stuffed the whole thing into her mouth. Then her eyes immediately turned to Lorne's last remaining sausage.
Lorne's lips twitched again, but he didn't hand over the sausage immediately, because Nelly's mouth was already as full as it could possibly be, at least in his opinion, there was no way she could fit another whole sausage in.
"I won't give you any more food until you finish what's in your mouth," Lorne said seriously.
Upon hearing this, Nelly immediately began chewing at full speed, just like a hamster.
"I'm done eating," Nelly said, opening her mouth wide for Lorne to check.
Lorne nodded slightly and placed the remaining sausage into the other person's bowl.
Nelly immediately stuffed the whole sausage into her mouth, as if the sausage would grow wings and fly away if she didn't.
Lorne guessed that Nelly's behavior was probably due to food shortages when she lived in the upper abyss.
"Eat slowly, no one's going to take it from you. Just get more if you need more."
"Each elf can only take three portions." Nelly chewed on the sausage with a slurping sound, her little mouth glistening with oil.
"It's okay, I can take two more." As he said this, Lorne glanced at Nelly's stomach.
Strangely, despite eating so much, the other person's abdomen remained flat.
"Where did those three portions you ate go?" Lorne asked curiously.
"Store it up, and eat it when you can't find food. If you eat too much, you won't be able to run away if you encounter danger." Nelly shared her survival wisdom frankly.
"Where is it stored?" Lorne asked.
"Shadow Pocket."
Is that a characteristic of the profession?
"Hmm. Master thief, Shadow Pocket." Nelly said, sending over more detailed memories via the mental network, which the system immediately digitized:
~~~
【Shadow Pocket】(Stalker, Thief Level 3)
Touch a non-living object that is completely in darkness and put it into your Shadow Pocket.
Any surface covered in shadow can be turned into the opening of a shadow pocket, allowing you to reach inside and retrieve items hidden within.
When you open the Shadow Pocket using yourself as the medium, you can retrieve items without using your hands.
The capacity of the Shadow Pocket is equal to (subclass level × 10 + Perception modifier) cubic meters.
• [Mentor Correction] (Master Thief Level 4)
Items stored in the Shadow Pocket will be frozen for time.
~~~
Lorne nodded knowingly, thinking that Nelly must have used the "Thief" subclass's characteristics to take the Dark Goddess Statue out of the shadow in her palm earlier.
Next, Lorne took two more portions of food, one for Nelly and the other for himself.
After Nelly licked the plate clean, she said to Lorne, "Give me your hand."
"I can't give you this." Lorne immediately hid his hand.
You ate my sausage, fine, but you want to eat my girlfriend too?!
Nelly paused for a moment, then quickly said, "Nelly won't eat you. If you give Nelly food, Nelly will protect you, and there will be lots and lots more food."
She explained very seriously, even a little anxiously, completely unaware that Lorne was teasing her.
Hmm, your thinking is quite clear, but you're too straightforward and don't understand social etiquette.
That's normal, considering he lived alone in the upper abyss for twelve years before recently entering the elven society.
Although she has a powerful mother who protects her, she will most likely only teach her how to survive and fight, not the intricacies of human relationships.
Lorne analyzed the situation in his mind and suddenly felt a little sorry for the silly boy.
"So how are you going to protect me?" Lorne asked.
Nelly shared the relevant memories directly with Lorne through the Mind Network.
The system then provides the following data:
~~~
[Shadowguard Mark] (Stalker, Shadowguard Level 1)
Consume 1 Dark Blessing to apply a Shadowguard Mark to a volunteer creature you touch, lasting for (subclass level) days. You can apply the Shadowguard Mark to up to (Perception modifier) creatures at the same time.
You can sense the specific location and life state of the recipient. The maximum sensing distance is (sub-rank + sensing adjustment value) × 10 meters.
Shadowguard Marks can be detected by detection magic and can be dispelled by dispel magic. You can remove Shadowguard Marks remotely at any time.
• [Mentor Correction]: (Shadow Guard Level 4)
You can establish a telepathic connection with the recipient; the distance of this connection equals the distance of the imprint's perception.
Your maximum perception distance to the imprinted person becomes (sub-rank + perception adjustment value) × 20 meters.
~~~
[Shadow Follower] (Stalker, Shadow Guard Level 2)
You can slip into the shadow of the Marked One with a standard spellcasting action and follow them, up to the point of long rest.
When you are in the Shadow Form state, the shadow of the person marked is considered your entity and has your armor level and damage resistance.
When the creature's shadow is restricted to your feet, you cannot make any movements.
When the shadow of the recipient connects with the shadow of the environment, you can move freely through the connected shadow, avoid harm, or find a suitable location to break free from the shadow-following state.
When the shadow of the recipient breaks connection with the ambient shadow, if you are in the ambient shadow, the shadow-following state will be forcibly disengaged.
The "shadow-following" state can be detected by detection magic and real vision.
• [Mentor Correction]: (Shadow Guard Level 4)
In the Shadow Form state, you can attack, cast spells, and unleash combat skills. When performing these actions, you can briefly expose only a portion of your body or weapon outside the shadow.
~~~
[Shadowguard Teleport] (Stalker, Shadowguard Level 3)
When you and the Marked One are both in a dark environment, you can spend 50 mana or 1 Dark Blessing to instantly teleport to their side.
Maximum teleportation distance = Imprint perception distance.
When the conditions for casting are met, you can teleport directly into the shadow of the recipient and gain the Shadow Follower status.
• [Mentor Correction]: (Shadow Guard Level 4)
Whenever you successfully kill an enemy creature, you can cast [Shadowguard Teleport] once for free before the end of this turn.
~~~
Lorne analyzed the system information in his mind:
It turns out that Nelly had been hiding in Kovina's shadow using her Shadow Guard abilities.
Also, when a sub-job level reaches level 4, all previously acquired sub-job traits will be enhanced.
Therefore, the terms "mentor-level," "master-level," and "grandmaster-level" professionals that people often talk about are not just simple titles, but have specific evaluation standards.
"Can you give me your hand now?" Nelly looked at Lorne expectantly.
"Of course." Lorne extended his hand for the other person to grasp, and then felt a mysterious force trying to enter his body.
"Relax, don't resist," Nelly reminded her.
Lorne immediately relaxed, and the mysterious power flowed into his body unimpeded.
"All done." Nelly grinned happily, a crumb of steamed bun stuck to the corner of her mouth particularly eye-catching.
Lorne finally couldn't hold back any longer: "Don't move, there's something in your mouth."
Nelly obediently didn't move.
The moment Lorne removed the crumbs from the bun, he felt completely refreshed and his mind was clear.
"Look, this is it." Lorne held up the crumbs of the bun to Nelly's eyes to show them.
After seeing it clearly, Nelly leaned over and stuck out her little tongue, licking away the crumbs of the bun.
Lorne paused for a moment, then quickly withdrew his hand.
Holy crap, my girlfriend was almost eaten!
