Chapter 9: Continue Copying

"I've finished eating, I'm going to school."

After quickly finishing her breakfast, Li En arrived at her doorstep. The maid, Lena, skillfully took off a new school uniform and put it on Li En.

"Have a safe journey, young master."

Li En nodded, took 5 shillings from a small box on the table, and stuffed it into his pocket.

Seeing this, the maid Reina asked curiously, "Didn't the master give you 20 shillings yesterday? Why did you take 5 more?"

Even for middle-class students at Oxford and Cambridge, their normal daily allowance is only about 2 or 3 shillings, which is already far more than that of ordinary middle-class students.

Lee En spent 20 shillings in a single day, and Lena felt as if he had simply lost the money.

"There are some special reasons, but it's okay. I should be able to use this 5 shillings for a long time." Li En gave a very unconvincing reason, picked up his belongings, and pushed open the door.

As soon as I opened the door, London, with its heavy industrial atmosphere, came into view.

"Cough cough cough..."

Feeling the thick fog burning his lungs, Li En hurried along the street toward the University of Michigan.

Fortunately, Li En encountered no problems today and arrived at the church before the service began.

"Hey, Li En, you almost missed it!"

Standing at the chapel entrance, Blake, dressed in a black academic gown, waved to Li En. "I almost signed you in for the superintendent! If we'd been caught, we'd both be in big trouble! Quick, put on your gown, or we'd be in trouble!"

"It's alright, I arrived on time, didn't I?"

Li En took the black academic robe from Blake, draped it over his shoulders, lowered his head, and discreetly entered the chapel.

University of Michigan mandates daily prayer and worship in the chapel, and this practice extends beyond University of Michigan to Cambridge as well.

Squeezing into the benches filled by the crowd, with the wealthy young men and nobles seated near the front of the central hall, Li En and Blake arrived at the front under the gazes of the academicians, mentors, professors, and pastors, their foreheads slightly sweaty.

"Quiet!"

The pastor stepped forward, stood on the reading platform, and began to read.

"Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will proclaim your praise."

The students' responses echoed in the chapel. Li En glanced at his "materialist warrior" label and decided not to recite with such devotion.

……

After the service ended, Li En and Blake walked out of the chapel and breathed a sigh of relief.

"It's finally over. What a mess," Blake said, taking off his black academic robes to reveal his luxurious attire. "I don't want to join a church or become a pastor. What's the point of making me read this stuff every day? I'd rather have an extra hour or two of sleep."

Li En thought so too, but since they were still in front of the chapel, it was best not to say anything carelessly.

"Mr. Wells, right?" A woman with high cheekbones and a thin face walked over. She wore thick glasses and her gaze was fixed on Li En. "You seem to be late today."

Li En quickly explained, "Your Excellency, I wasn't actually late. I just arrived a little later than the rest of you."

"Is that so? In my understanding, this is being late," the supervisor said coldly behind his glasses. "But don't worry, besides you, I've caught a few other students who are similar to you, so you won't be without companions."

Li En looked behind the school supervisor and saw two or three rich kids who hadn't shown up all week. They were probably either having someone sign in for them or simply pretending to be sick to avoid the week.

"Oh no, you've been caught by the school supervisor, you're doomed." Blake shook his head helplessly.

The supervisor of a school is somewhat like the police are to a country, possessing a certain degree of legal authority over security on campus. If you are caught by the supervisor, you're really in big trouble.

It's even more terrifying than a high school student being caught by the dean of students during school hours!

"Ms. Una," just as Li En was resigning himself to his bad luck, a familiar voice rang out, "There must be something wrong here. Mr. Wells was late because he went to move some things for me, not because he wanted to be late."

Li En looked in the direction of the sound and found that Professor Osborne was walking over from the outside.

Wearing an ill-fitting, oversized school uniform, Estelle hid behind Professor Osborn and nodded her chin at Lyon.

It seems that Estelle discovered that Lyon was in trouble and specifically went to call Professor Osborn over.

"Professor Osborne!" Upon seeing Professor Osborne, the superintendent's tone softened immediately, becoming less harsh. "I see. Mr. Wells is your student?"

Professor Osborne nodded. "Yes, Mr. Wells is exceptionally gifted. I personally requested him from Eli Thorne. Please, Supervisor, be lenient with him."

"Since you're the professor's student and were late because you were helping him move things, that's not surprising," the superintendent said with a smile, though it wasn't a pleasant one. "Mr. Wells, you can leave now. The rest of you, come with me."

The remaining unfortunate souls didn't receive the same treatment as Li En; Professor Osborn wouldn't care whether they lived or died.

"Thank you, Professor," Li En quickly said.

"You're welcome," Professor Osborn waved his hand. "If you really want to repay me, then cooperate well with my research and show me your genius. Otherwise, I'll send you back to Inspector Una."

After saying that, Professor Osborn turned and left, leaving behind the words, "You don't need to go to the first class. Come directly to my lab."

Estelle quickly caught up with Professor Osborn. Her light brown boots seemed a bit ill-fitting, making a clattering sound as she walked. She didn't forget to turn back and wave to Li En along the way.

Before Li En could reply, Blake pounced on him, "You bastard! When did you become Cole Osborn's student?"

"Yesterday, hey, what are you doing? Get off me!" Li En shook him off. "Professor Eli took me to see him, and then he accepted me as his student. From now on, I'll get double credits. Pretty cool, right?"

Blake glared at himself, seemingly furious. "Damn it! You actually surpassed me!"

"When did you ever catch up with me?"

Enraged by those words, Blake nearly vomited blood. Pointing his finger at Li En's nose, he shouted, "You just wait! At the final exams, I'm going to utterly crush you!"

The thought of being told by the British man that he would rub her against the ground made Lee Eun feel a chill creep down her spine.

Were there many gay men in London during this period? Probably... not many...

Li En didn't know much about this matter, but the more he thought about it, the more frightened he felt. After asking Black to pass on a message to Professor Eli, Li En turned around and followed Estelle's footsteps.

Once it reached a suitable distance, the label, which had been interrupted halfway through copying yesterday, continued its countdown.
