Chapter 5: The New Label
Following behind her mentor, Li En walked through the school's central courtyard.
As I passed by, people kept greeting the mentor, but they all acted humbly.
"Hello, Professor Thorne."
"Professor Thorne."
"Professor Thorne, you've worked hard."
Eli Thorne simply nodded casually, without giving a verbal reply.
Although many of the people who greeted him earlier were children of nobles, this was the University of Michigan.
Outside of the University of Michigan, the sons of nobles may wield great power and command everyone to obey their orders, but within the University of Michigan, knowledge reigns supreme.
No matter if you are the son of an earl or even a duke, you must bow your head respectfully when you see a professor or mentor.
After passing through the courtyard, they arrived at a sunlit corridor. Professor Eli led Li En to the door of a laboratory.
Dengdengdeng-
A knock was made on the wooden door, and an anxious voice came from inside.
"Wait a minute, damn it, my experiment was almost a success!"
The door opened, and a tall, thin man, slightly older than Professor Eli, came out. Upon seeing Professor Eli, his initial irritation and anger dissipated somewhat.
"Oh, it's you... What are you doing? I'm busy."
Professor Eli said, "Didn't you ask me earlier if I had any students with solid theoretical knowledge? Let me introduce you to some."
With that, Professor Eli nudged Lee forward. "It's him. What do you think?"
Li Enhe exchanged a glance with the tall, thin man in front of him. The man was wearing the same robe as Professor Eli, but his robe was stained and his hair looked like it hadn't been washed in a while.
The monocle he held in his eye socket was covered with a thick layer of grease, which made him seem like he didn't like to be clean, but it was more like he was so engrossed in his experiments that he didn't have time to clean himself.
"This kid?" The tall, thin man sized Li En up and down. "Hmm... are you sure his theoretical knowledge is solid? Are you sure you're not just giving me a runaround?"
Professor Eli replied, "Anyway, I've brought the man here. If you're willing to trust me, then use him; if not, then forget it."
After hesitating for a moment, the tall, thin man said to Li En, "My name is Cole Osborn. Although Eli and I are both professors, we are different. He is responsible for lecturing, and I am responsible for experiments. As long as you can satisfy me, you will have two mentors in the future."
"Although your workload and studies will increase, the benefits are that you'll get double the credits, scholarships will be easier to apply for, and you'll have the opportunity to meet some important people you never imagined. Do you understand?"
Li En originally wanted to refuse, since he was now more interested in finding people with labels, copying those labels from them, and seeing if there were any opportunities to improve himself.
But he suddenly noticed that the firefly-like glow in the room behind the tall, thin man was much denser than outside, which piqued Li En's interest.
"Understood, Professor Osborn. I will do my best."
After saying that, Professor Osborn turned around and led Li En into the laboratory.
The laboratory was small, and the contents were quite cluttered.
Papers were scattered on the floor, covered with footprints. A whale oil lamp provided a dim light source and emitted a captivating fragrance.
All sorts of strange and unusual instruments were placed on the table, emitting strange noises.
"Those damn bastards actually told me that the goods I ordered can't be delivered!" Professor Osborn said, sounding quite annoyed.
Professor Eli glanced at the surrounding instruments and casually asked, "Why?"
"It's because of those idiots at Scotland Yard, of course!" Professor Osborne was so angry he wanted to grab the mercury lamp and throw it on the ground. "The goods I ordered were smuggled. They wanted to ship them over from the River Wandl, but the River Wandl is full of Scotland Yard people!"
Professor Eli said, "It's normal. There are too many bodies found on the other side of the Wandal River. I also saw the Times article. I heard that a serial killer went on a killing spree in London and then dumped the bodies on the other side of the Wandal River."
"Ha! Murderers? They're all bastards!" Professor Osborne's tone grew increasingly agitated. "It must have been those Frenchmen who infiltrated London. Just kick them all out and that'll be the end of it!"
Li En remained silent after hearing this, truly a testament to the century-old friendship between Britain and France.
Before he finished speaking, Professor Osborn placed something on the central laboratory table.
"Come on, kid, come and figure out with me why this thing won't move."
Li En responded and went to the lab table, glancing at the rare object on it.
It turned out to be a withered, shrunken monkey paw covered with a layer of rough black fur.
The skin of the five slender fingers was completely attached to the bones, giving it a fragility that was somewhat unsettling.
"This is something a friend of mine got from the East Indies. It's said to grant three wishes," Professor Osborn said in a deep voice. "I feel this thing has an inseparable connection with mysticism, but I don't know how to make it work."
Professor Eli scoffed. "What if it's fake? Just a scam to swindle your money?"
Professor Osborne argued, "You know I'm already broke!"
Li En's face darkened.
He had heard of the Monkey Claw before he transmigrated; it was indeed a ruthless creature capable of granting three wishes, but the Monkey Claw came at a price.
It can indeed grant wishes, but the method of granting wishes is quite terrifying.
For example, if you wish for two hundred pounds of wealth, it will kill the wisher's relatives and use the compensation to give the wisher the two hundred pounds of wealth.
If this thing is real, that would be incredible!
However, when Li En's gaze fell on the monkey's paw, he suddenly realized that something was wrong.
Many fluorescent lights remained on the surface of the monkey's paw.
It was as if it had been completely enveloped, filled with spiritual radiance.
On the entire surface of its palm, only its index finger shimmered like a glow stick, brighter than the rest of the monkey's paw!
"No way..."
Li En murmured something to himself, then reached out and gently touched the glowing finger of the monkey's paw.
Click—
The instant Li En touched the monkey's paw, the entire withered and shrunken hand twisted on the table like a slender snake, writhing eerily before quickly coming to a stop.
Upon seeing this, Professor Osborn exclaimed in astonishment, "My God, how did you do that?"
"I just touched it." Li En looked down at the monkey's paw again. This time, it was no longer its fingers that were lit up, but its entire palm, as if it was quietly waiting for someone to make a wish.
This thing is actually real!
Lee En confirmed this almost instantly.
Professor Osborn reached out and, mimicking Li En, touched the monkey's index finger, but this time there was no reaction.
"Strange," Professor Osborn scratched his head in frustration, "what's going on?"
"Perhaps it's just a merchant's trick, deliberately making up a story to deceive you, selling you a useless piece of junk at a high price," Professor Eli shrugged. "A very common tactic."
Scratching his head, Professor Osborn looked somewhat disappointed and casually tossed the monkey's paw to Lee.
Li En was stunned for a moment. What? This thing is hotter than a regular sweet potato. Why are you throwing it at me?
"You're more clever than I thought. You can be my student. I'm giving you this as a gift for becoming my student. Keep it as a rare item from the occult."
Do you even know what you threw at me...?
However, monkey paws are quite dangerous, and Li En felt it was better to keep them with him. If someone unknowingly took them and used them for evil purposes, that would be terrible.
"Alright, you can go now. If you need anything later, I'll have someone come find you."
Li En originally wanted to try to refuse, since he really wasn't interested in doing experiments. He thought he might as well use his free time to find someone with a label so he could create some labels that would give him the ability to protect himself.
Suddenly, the laboratory door was pushed open.
"Professor, I've helped you move your things. Is there anything else I can do for you?"
Li En's gaze turned towards the doorway.
A petite but pretty girl walked in from outside, carrying layers upon layers of occult books that looked like they might collapse at any moment.
Above her head, three lines of characters also appeared.
