Chapter 3: The Born Investigator

The whole of London was shrouded in fog.

Li En struggled to squeeze through the gap between the newsboy and the pedestrians. A carriage roared through the potholed street, nearly knocking him off his feet as he was crossing.

"Hey kid, watch your step! If you crash into the church carriage, I'll make you regret it!"

The coachman, dressed in corduroy overalls and matte leather boots, cursed at Li En. Although he was just an ordinary coachman, he was very proud to be able to drive a carriage for church personnel.

It felt as if I had transcended social class and could be compared to the bishops who stood on the altar preaching and teaching.

"Neuropathy."

Li En cursed under his breath and walked into the University of Michigan campus gates with the book in his arms.

The Gothic buildings that can be seen everywhere on campus are like traps set up by London for the sky. If the sky were to collapse one day, these Gothic buildings would become traps in the deep pit, turning anyone who falls from the sky into a sieve.

Passing through rows of dark gray buildings covered in moss, some workers responsible for cleaning the moss were lying on the exterior walls, choked by the thick fog in the sky.

Soon, Li En crossed the campus and arrived at the door of a closed classroom.

Pushing open the door, in the spacious, fan-shaped classroom, all the students on the stacked seats turned their gaze to Li En as he entered the classroom.

Standing on the podium, the instructor, dressed in a black robe, also cast his gaze toward Li En. His face was covered with wrinkles, and although he was not particularly old, he was already at risk of balding.

"Mr. Lee En Wales," the tutor's voice suddenly turned cold, "you're late, do you know that? Do you know what that means?"

Li En hesitated for a moment before replying, "Does that mean if I'm delayed by one minute, the whole class of over thirty people will be delayed by half an hour?"

The mentor was stunned for a second. He thought of many bizarre ways to embarrass someone, but none of them were as bizarre as what Li En said at that moment.

"You know the rules: no one is allowed to be late for my class," the instructor adjusted his expression, his tone serious. "You only have one chance. If you can answer my question, you won't be punished."

The students around Li En cast pitying glances at him. Although it was said that as long as he answered the questions, he would not be punished, no one had ever answered the questions posed by the tutor so far.

After all, this professor is one of the most renowned professors in the entire University of Michigan. The questions he asks are either extremely tricky or have not been thoroughly researched by anyone. It would be strange if anyone could answer the questions he asks.

"I'm asking you, theoretically speaking, what would it take to turn coal into gold?"

As soon as the question was asked, a sparse rustling of pages turning filled the classroom.

Clearly, no one in the class could answer this question; everyone wanted to find the answer in the book.

The tutor didn't linger on Li En's gaze for long, and immediately picked up his pen to record Li En's punishment for being late.

At this time.

"First, we need to determine the vibration frequency of the coal mine itself. In general, gold is in a perfect state of high frequency."

Without much hesitation, Li En directly extracted the keywords from his memory to answer, "Then, by purifying and changing the vibration frequency of the coal itself, it was stabilized at a high frequency consistent with that of gold."

Even after an answer was given, the sound of pages turning in the classroom showed no sign of stopping.

Upon hearing Li En's answer, the tutor turned his head and stared at Li En.

The afternoon sun not only pierced through the gray mist but also through a large rose window, finally settling on the professor's slightly surprised face.

"Incredible, Mr. Wells, you're right."

He crossed out the contents of the paper with his pen and said to everyone in the classroom, "No need to look at it anymore. This part is not in the book. This is knowledge that you should learn next semester, but you can memorize it in advance."

"This content comes from Hermeticism, which is currently recognized as the foundation of mysticism. The question just now came from one of the seven universal laws of Hermeticism, namely the law of vibration."

"The law states that 'all things are in motion, nothing is forbidden, and the only difference is the frequency.' This means that if you want to change matter, you only need to adjust its frequency, which is also an important theory of alchemy."

As he spoke, the instructor wrote the words of Hermeticism on the blackboard.

"But theory is theory and facts are facts. We have not yet mastered a way to change the vibration frequency of matter, so alchemy is actually impossible to complete."

After saying this, the tutor nodded at Li En with satisfaction. "This is beyond my expectations, Mr. Wells. Is this knowledge you came up with yourself?"

Li En thought for a moment, "I guess so. I've been looking up books on mysticism in the library lately."

"Good," the tutor nodded slightly and gestured for you to return to your seat. "I hope you get a good grade on your final exam."

Feeling as if granted a pardon, Li En breathed a sigh of relief, stepped onto the pyramid-like steps, and walked towards the long table in the classroom.

Just as Li En sat down, a voice of someone her age came from behind her.

A blond, sharp-eyed young man said to Li En, "You bastard, did you cheat?"

Li En glanced at him sideways. The young man behind him was dressed exquisitely, with his shirt and collar made of high-end fabrics, and even the shawl draped over his shoulders was made of wool, clearly indicating that it was expensive.

This man was named Black Raymond. His father was a viscount who owned a fief in the countryside. To satisfy his son's interest, he sent him to London to study knowledge related to the occult.

In London, where land is incredibly expensive, even viscounts don't own their own detached mansions and can only rent relatively upscale townhouses.

Even some viscounts who weren't particularly wealthy could only afford to rent half a townhouse to save face.

The Blake family wasn't particularly wealthy, but the advantage was that his family didn't live in London often, so the money he would have spent on renting townhouses was used by Blake to improve himself and his appearance.

"I cheated? Ridiculous," Li En chuckled. "You'll find out whether I cheated or not during the final exams."

The label of "genius of mysticism" brings him abundant knowledge of mysticism, not to mention doubled learning ability, making it incredibly easy for him to get a perfect score on the final exam.

"Damn it, I have to study hard too!" Blake didn't want to be left behind by his friends, so he immediately opened his textbook and started reciting the contents.

But in Li En's view, this behavior was no different from suddenly taking out an English dictionary and starting to memorize "abandon" on the eve of the CET-4 or CET-6 exam.

Not long after sitting down, Li En wanted to open the books he had borrowed and take a closer look.

Suddenly, a string of white characters appeared in his field of vision.

In the front row of the classroom, there was a girl whose back was facing me.

Above her head, three lines of text were floating prominently.
