My Dongguan Love Story
Chapter 137 Personal Caregiver
I met Tang Yan's worried gaze and nodded gently. Only after seeing her off did I secretly breathe a sigh of relief.
I used to envy those characters in TV dramas who were surrounded by beautiful women, but when I actually experienced this, I realized that it wasn't a blessing at all, but rather a source of great distress.
The harmonious coexistence of women in TV dramas is ultimately just an act. Love is inherently selfish; who wouldn't want to possess someone entirely?
Tang Yan and Lin Guilian both have fiery tempers and are completely incompatible; I simply couldn't handle them.
To be honest, I would rather choose only one person to be with than juggle two people at the same time.
Tang Yan's situation is already set in stone and cannot be changed for the time being. But what about Lin Guilian? Recalling how she insisted on clinging to him just now, it seems she won't let go so easily.
Besides, she was injured and bedridden because of me; how could I ignore her? If I were to leave now, it would be utterly heartless and ungrateful.
I shook my head, setting aside my complicated concerns, and decided to go into the ward first to check on Lin Guilian's condition before deciding whether to help her contact her parents.
When Lin Guilian saw me turn back, she subconsciously glanced behind me. Not seeing Tang Yan, her eyes lit up instantly, and a sweet smile spread across her face. She said to me in a soft, coquettish voice, "Dazhuang, Tang Yan left?"
"Hmm." I nodded gently, looking at her on the hospital bed, and asked, "Given your current condition, should we tell your family?"
Upon hearing this, Lin Guilian immediately shook her head repeatedly, her tone slightly sly: "Don't tell them yet! My parents will worry unnecessarily and rush over. If they find out I took the knife for my boyfriend, they'll definitely drag you back on the spot and make you their son-in-law!"
I was slightly taken aback by what I heard, and hurriedly waved my hand: "Don't talk nonsense about boyfriends or sons-in-law."
Lin Guilian immediately puffed out her cheeks and looked at me defiantly: "How can you say such nonsense? You clearly promised me that you would be my boyfriend after the surgery, and you can't go back on your word!"
I scratched my head a little embarrassedly: "I only said that to reassure you so you could have the surgery."
"I don't care~" she said, turning her head away playfully, her tone resolute, "Anyway, you promised, so to me, you're my boyfriend."
"Um..." I scratched my head, looking at her pouting and acting spoiled. I knew I couldn't reason with her, so I decided to stop dwelling on it and get back to the point: "You really don't plan to tell your parents?"
"Hmm." She stared at me with bright eyes, her tone slightly mischievous, "If you're not afraid they'll pressure us to get married quickly, go ahead and talk to them."
Upon hearing this, I scratched my head again, pondered for a moment, and decided to let it go. It's better to avoid trouble and not mention it for now.
As I was pondering this, I suddenly noticed Lin Guilian frowning, her expression showing some discomfort. My heart tightened at the sight, and I quickly asked, "Guilian, are you feeling unwell?"
Lin Guilian said shyly in a low voice, "I need to go to the restroom."
I instinctively replied, "Then hurry up and go."
I had barely finished speaking when I suddenly remembered that she had just had surgery and was extremely immobile; she absolutely could not walk on her own. I told her to wait patiently and then quickly went out to find the nurse on duty.
The nurse on duty heard what I said, looked up at me, and said, "If she wants to go to the toilet, just help her. Why are you telling me?"
My heart skipped a beat, and I finally realized that being a caregiver meant taking care of all the patient's daily chores. The thought of helping Lin Guilian to the restroom made my face burn with embarrassment.
Lin Guilian's ears also flushed red, and she glanced at me shyly. After a moment, she composed herself and forced a smile, "It's okay, you're my boyfriend anyway, it's nothing to help me to the bathroom."
I glanced at her awkwardly, hesitating to go forward. Lin Guilian urged anxiously and shyly, "Dazhuang, if we delay any longer, I'm really going to wet my pants."
Knowing that I would be the one cleaning up the mess in the end, I didn't dare hesitate any longer. I quickly stepped forward to help her up and sighed helplessly, "Alright, I'll help you across."
Lin Guilian rolled her eyes at me when she heard what I said, but didn't say anything. With my help, she slowly stood up.
She was weak after the surgery and had no strength left in her body; she couldn't even stand on her own. She had to put one arm around my shoulder and lean most of her weight on me as I half-supported and half-carried her to the bathroom.
As I walked slowly towards the door, my heart pounded faster and faster. She leaned close to my shoulder, our warm bodies pressed together, and I could clearly feel her heart racing too.
Entering the bathroom, I carefully helped Lin Guilian squat down. Just as I was about to straighten up and step outside to wait, her voice came softly, tinged with panic and weakness: "Dazhuang, don't go. I'm not steady and can't squat down. I need to support you. It would be troublesome if you fell."
Hearing this, my cheeks instantly burned, and my heart pounded with anxiety. I had no choice but to obediently squat down, my back to her. She gently grasped my shoulder with one hand, and used the other hand to support herself firmly on the ground, using my strength to steady her weak body, and slowly bent her knees to squat down.
Those few moments felt like an eternity; every second was excruciating. Only when she finished did my heart begin to ease. Just then, I heard her gentle voice: "Dazhuang, get me a piece of paper."
"Huh? Oh." I didn't think much about why she needed a tissue, so I just grabbed one and handed it to her. Then I reached out and slowly helped her up. She pointed to a stool next to her, so I helped her walk over and sit down.
As soon as she steadied herself, she said softly, "Dazhuang, I feel all sticky and uncomfortable. I want to take a shower."
"Take a...shower?" I was startled and repeated it subconsciously, suddenly feeling troubled.
Lin Guilian nodded gently, her brows furrowing slightly, her face showing discomfort: "Look, you've sweated a lot, and there's still blood on your stomach and thighs. It's really uncomfortable to have it sticking to your skin, so you have to wash it off."
After listening, I nodded and quickly said, "Okay, then you can take your time washing. I'll go outside and wait for you."
Seeing me turn to leave, Lin Guilian quickly raised her hand and grabbed my wrist, her voice soft and tinged with helplessness: "Hey, Dazhuang, don't go."
She raised her pale face, her eyes timid: "Could you stay and help me? I have no strength in my hands at all, I can't move them, and I can't wash myself."
I froze, my ears burning instantly, and I couldn't help but wonder if she was deliberately making things difficult for me. But when I turned to look at her pale face and weak, tired eyes, I immediately remembered the nurse's instructions: she needed my care and attention for everything after the surgery.
The distracting thoughts in my mind vanished instantly, and I suddenly realized that she was truly weak and powerless, with no room for any stubbornness whatsoever.
Lin Guilian, afraid I would think she was doing it on purpose, specifically said, "When you're showering, your hands move around a lot, and it's easy to pull on your abdomen and cause secondary injury. I just pulled you hard, and I felt my stomach hurt."
I listened to her words, nodded, and said helplessly, "Okay, okay, I'll stay and help you."
Lin Guilian smiled upon hearing this, released her grip, and said, "Then help me take off my clothes."
"Take off...take off your clothes?" I was slightly taken aback, forcibly suppressing the panic surging in my heart, and calmed myself down to look at the clothes on her body.
The dress she was wearing when the accident was stained with blood and was no longer wearable. After the surgery, the nurses changed her into a blue and white striped two-piece hospital gown. The fabric was loose and soft, and the style was like home pajamas. The front of the gown had a button-down design, which had to be unbuttoned one button at a time from top to bottom to take it off.
Looking at her thin hospital gown, and thinking of her current weakness and how difficult it was for her to even lift her hand, my Adam's apple bobbed involuntarily, and the heat on my face lingered. Even though it was just a reluctant act of caring for her, I still felt uneasy and unsure what to do with my hands and feet in her frail state.
I took a deep breath, my fingertips gently pinching the buttons on my collar, my movements slow and deliberate as I unbuttoned them one by one. With each button I undid, I deliberately turned my head away to avoid looking around, my heart pounding faster and faster.
Lin Guilian lowered her head, her long eyelashes trembling slightly, a faint blush spreading across her cheeks. She curled up slightly, completely entrusting herself to me with peace of mind.
The ward was so quiet you could hear a pin drop, except for the two people's slightly rapid heartbeats, which rose and fell, and were particularly clear in the quiet space.
