Chapter 26 A Mishap Happened on the Spot
The next morning, Lin Weidong went out.
He was clutching several textbooks, wrapped tightly in old newspapers, as if they were some precious treasure. In reality, to him, these were just money.
Last night, he and Wang Xiulan had already calculated: a math book would cost two yuan, a physics book two yuan, and an English book even more expensive. If they sold them all, they could get at least ten yuan.
Thinking of this, Lin Weidong's steps became much lighter.
Soon, he arrived near the county high school. This area was crowded with people preparing for the college entrance exam, and it was also the busiest place for book sales recently.
Sure enough, after standing there for a while, people came over.
"Do you have textbooks?"
"Yes," Lin Weidong immediately perked up, "high school math, physics, and English are all available."
The young man's eyes lit up immediately: "How much?"
"Two yuan a book."
The other person thought for a moment and nodded: "Okay, I'll take a look."
Lin Weidong immediately handed the book over.
But the next second, the other person suddenly froze: "Huh?"
"What's wrong?"
"This book..." The young man turned to the first page, his brows slowly furrowing. Then he turned to the second and third pages, his expression growing increasingly strange.
"What's wrong?" Lin Weidong suddenly felt uneasy.
"Isn't this Lin Xiuhe's book?"
"What?"
"I bought her books," the young man said, pointing to the corner of the page. "Look here."
Lin Weidong subconsciously looked down. At the very bottom of the page, he saw a small name written—Lin Xiuhe. The handwriting was neat and almost illegible, but it was definitely there.
With a bang, Lin Weidong's mind went blank.
He didn't even notice. Because there were so many books, he hadn't looked through them carefully after bringing them home last night.
"What...what's your relationship with her?" the young man asked warily.
"I……"
"Besides, I've seen this book before; it was in her warehouse just a few days ago."
As soon as he finished speaking, several people around him looked over.
"Lin Xiuhe? The one from the supply and marketing cooperative?"
"I've bought her books too!"
"How did her book end up here?"
The atmosphere began to turn tense. More and more people gathered around. Lin Weidong's forehead instantly broke out in a sweat.
"It's a misunderstanding, all a misunderstanding."
"What misunderstanding?"
"These are my family's books, and she is my older sister."
The moment those words left my mouth, the surroundings became even noisier.
Then, someone laughed: "You're Lin Weidong?"
Lin Weidong was taken aback: "You know me?"
"Of course I know you," the man sneered. "Who doesn't know you've been stealing money lately?"
Boom! The crowd erupted in chaos.
"So it was him!"
"The one where the Liu family called off the engagement?"
"Lin Weidong, the one who stole the money?"
No wonder.
One sentence after another came crashing down on him like slaps. Lin Weidong's face instantly turned red.
"Nonsense! Who stole the money!"
"The whole production team knows, and you still won't admit it?"
"I……"
He opened his mouth, but found he couldn't explain it at all. Because it was true.
Just then, a voice suddenly came from behind the crowd.
"Make way."
The sound wasn't loud, but it quieted the surroundings down.
The crowd parted automatically. Lin Xiuhe walked in, followed by Li Hongmei.
Lin Weidong's face turned deathly pale: "Sister..."
He never expected her to come, and so quickly.
"Selling books?" Lin Xiuhe glanced at the textbooks in his arms, her voice calm and devoid of emotion.
But the more this happened, the more afraid Lin Weidong became.
"I……"
"These books." Lin Xiuhe reached out and took one, opened it to the first page, and then held it up.
Everyone saw that name—Lin Xiuhe.
"These are my books," she said. "They were thrown out of the warehouse the day before yesterday."
Boom! The crowd erupted in chaos.
"Stolen?"
"It really was stolen!"
"He even stole his own sister's books?"
The discussion was overwhelming.
Lin Weidong's face was deathly pale, and he seemed to be nailed to the spot.
"I didn't steal it! I just borrowed it!"
"Borrow?" Lin Xiuhe laughed. "Did you tell me before you borrowed it? No. Did you plan to return it? No. That's not borrowing."
She looked at him, her voice soft but each word clear: "That's called stealing."
As the last word fell, Lin Weidong completely broke down.
The gazes around me—disdainful, mocking, and gloating—felt like needles.
At that moment, he experienced for the first time what it meant to feel utterly ashamed.
Just then, an angry voice suddenly rang out from outside the crowd.
"Lin Weidong!"
Everyone turned around.
Wang Xiulan rushed over, her face pale, clearly already aware that something had happened.
Little did she know, the real trouble was just beginning.
