Diary of Getting Rich Quick in the South

Chapter 8 Su Wan's Affair

My cousin's wife cheated on me?

My first reaction was that it was impossible.

Su Wan is such a gentle and virtuous person. She cared for me, someone she disliked, so much. How could she possibly cheat on me?

I said, "Cousin, are you sure you're not mistaken?"

A "click" sound came from the other end of the phone, the sound of a lighter going off.

"It's hard to explain over the phone. I'll come find you later and talk to you in person. Let me tell you, brother, it's easy to draw a tiger's skin but hard to draw its bones; you can know a person's face but not their heart; you can't see into their heart!"

After hanging up the phone, I was in a daze for a long time, my mind was buzzing.

Did Su Wan really cheat on her husband?

My cousin wouldn't lie to me about something like this; there's no need for him to.

How could someone as gentle, virtuous, and well-educated as her do such a shameless thing?

But then I thought about it again. My cousin was always smoking and drinking, often didn't come home at night, went to brothels, and argued with Su Wan all the time.

Most importantly, the couple has been married for so long but has not been able to conceive.

What are children? They are the bond between husband and wife, and the emotional support of a family.

Su Wan spends her days in an empty house, with no one to accompany her, no one to rely on, and no tenderness or love from her husband. She has to endure loneliness and emotional abuse day after day.

When feelings of grievance and emptiness accumulate for a long time, it's inevitable to feel disheartened, lost, and unable to resist the urge to find someone to rely on.

"What are you thinking about?"

A very magnetic female voice rang in my ear: "Still in the dormitory when it's time for work?"

I turned my head and saw Zhang Dongting standing by my bed. I was so startled that I jumped up and hit my head hard on the upper bunk. I grimaced in pain as I covered my forehead.

"I'm...I'm sorry, Mr. Zhang, I...I'll go to work right now."

I was late on my first day of work and got caught red-handed by the boss. Nobody's more unlucky than me.

Zhang Dongting couldn't help but burst out laughing, walked up to me, stood on tiptoe, and looked at the top of my head.

"Don't cover it, that made such a loud noise, are you bleeding?"

I looked at my palm, shook my head and said it was nothing, just a little sore.

After I finished speaking, I was about to leave.

"What's the rush? Have a seat."

Zhang Dongting didn't mind at all, and sat directly on my bed, patting the side next to her to indicate that I should sit down and talk.

I didn't dare sit next to her, so I pulled up a chair and sat down obediently opposite her, with my hands on my knees and my back straight, just like a primary school student listening to a lesson.

"Don't be so nervous, relax. I just came to check on things."

Zhang Dongting touched the bed sheet, glanced at the neatly made dormitory room, and joked, "I didn't realize that you, a grown man, live a more refined life than a woman."

I lowered my head and said that Sister Wan helped me tidy it up.

"Oh?"

Zhang Dongting looked at me with a half-squinted eye and a half-smile: "Your cousin-in-law cares about you quite a bit."

I didn't know how to respond to that, so I just smiled shyly.

She spoke again: "Chen An, after working for half a day, are you feeling okay? If you're not, be sure to tell me, and I'll change your position."

Unexpectedly, Ms. Zhang was quite easy to talk to, and her voice was gentle. Her caring older sister demeanor made me gradually relax.

I smiled and replied, "I can adapt, and it's not tiring. Thank you, Mr. Zhang, for giving me this opportunity to learn. I will definitely study hard and won't let you down."

"I told you not to be nervous. Look, you've only said one sentence and you're already calling me 'General Manager Zhang' all the time."

Zhang Dongting smiled and said, "Call me Sister Ting when we're alone."

what?

I was taken aback and said, "How can this be?"

"Why not?"

Zhang Dongting deliberately put on a stern face: "Your cousin's wife is my best friend. You are her brother, so naturally you are my brother too. Come on, call me Sister Ting."

My face flushed red, and I didn't dare to meet her teasing gaze. I stammered, "Sister Ting."

"Speak louder."

"Sister Ting!"

"Ah, that's more like it."

Zhang Dongting stood up, put her hands behind her back, and walked around the dormitory. She said, "You just arrived today. Let's go out for dinner tonight to welcome you. I'll also introduce you to some clients. As long as you work hard, earning tens of thousands of yuan a month won't be a problem."

Tens of thousands of yuan a month!

"Thank you, Mr. Zhang! Thank you, Mr. Zhang!"

"Alright, alright, since you call me Sister Ting, saying thank you is too formal. Let's go to Cuifu for dinner after get off work."

Before I could refuse, she got up and walked towards the door, casually adding, "You don't need to work this afternoon. Buy some clothes, and you can get reimbursed by the finance department. I'll put in a good word for you with your department."

Is Mr. Zhang trying to invite me out?

I scratched my head. This was the first time a bride had ever been in a bridal sedan chair, so I was a little nervous.

I don't know if I need to bring a gift.

After thinking for a while, I called Su Wan.

"Chen An, is something missing? I haven't gone far. I'll buy you whatever you need." Su Wan's gentle voice rang out.

I quickly said, "Sister Wan, everything's bought. There are two things I want to tell you."

"Speak, what is it?"

"I just couldn't help myself and called my cousin. He thought you were complaining to me, but I've already explained it to him. It was all my own idea and has nothing to do with you. I'm sorry, Sister Wan, I didn't listen to you and called him without permission."

Actually, I didn't want to tell her about this, but I was afraid that my cousin would be petty and cause trouble for Su Wan behind her back.

She'll definitely be disappointed in me if she finds out about this later.

Rather than letting her misunderstand later, I'd rather take the initiative and be honest with her beforehand.

"I thought it was something serious."

Su Wan didn't take it to heart and instead comforted me, "So what if you hit each other? Every couple has their arguments and quarrels. Even teeth bite each other's lips sometimes. If you don't argue, you're like strangers."

She sighed softly and explained, "The reason I didn't let you make the call before wasn't because I was afraid I'd argue with him, but because I felt you didn't need to get involved in our messy marriage, lest your cousin hold a grudge and it just cause you more trouble."

I was deeply moved after hearing it.

What a wonderful sister-in-law! My cousin is incredibly lucky to have married her.

"Oh, right, there's one more thing?" Su Wan asked.

"Mr. Zhang invited me out for dinner tonight, saying he'd throw me a welcome dinner and introduce me to clients," I reported truthfully.

"That sounds great, let's go together."

I hesitated for a moment and said, "Sister Ting told me I don't have to work this afternoon and can go buy some clothes. Do you think I should buy anything? This is my first time participating, and I don't know anything about it."

"What did you call her?"

I was taken aback: "Sister Ting, she said to call her that in private from now on."

There was a few seconds of silence on the other end of the phone before Su Wan's voice came through.

"Chen An, Zhang Dongting has been divorced for three years. Be careful when you're with her."
