Take her as my wife
Chapter 31 In his sister's eyes, he was just a "child".
Just as I returned to the hospital from the noodle shop, the test results came back—everything was normal.
The two then returned home reassured.
After dinner, Jiang Ni organized the information she had gathered that day, created a separate document, and typed out some of her guesses:
[Drunk driving?]
[Drug driving?]
[Unidentified cigarette brand?]
Beyond certain professional areas, Jiang Ni couldn't come up with a solution on her own, so she took her tablet and knocked on Tan Wen's door.
"Tan asked, have you finished showering?"
As soon as she finished speaking, footsteps came from inside, growing closer. Tan Wen, wiping his short hair with a towel in one hand, came over and opened the door for her.
"I'm done washing," Tan asked, stepping aside to let him pass. "Have you treated the lacerations on your wrists and feet?"
Jiang Ni sat down naturally at the desk in his room: "It's been dealt with—there's something very important I haven't told you yet, can you help me analyze it?"
To avoid worrying Aunt Zhou, she changed into a long-sleeved nightgown when she got home today to cover the marks on her wrists.
There was only one chair in the room, so Tan Wen sat down on the edge of the bed: "Go on, I'm listening."
Jiang Ni wanted to show him the tablet, but it wasn't convenient to sit face-to-face like this, so she simply got up and sat down next to Tan Wen.
"She's in my bed," he thought absentmindedly.
Jiang Ni, oblivious to his distraction, handed him the tablet: "The news I heard before was that Du Yucheng was driving under the influence, causing this accident. Theoretically, that makes sense; otherwise, a rich second-generation heir living a comfortable life wouldn't need to hit someone to retaliate against society. Only 'drunk driving' could be a plausible excuse."
Tan calmed himself down and scanned the contents of her tablet: "You suspect him—of drug use?"
"Well," Jiang Ni explained about the cigarettes, "I've met a few drug addicts before, all of them young kids, who relied on homemade cigarettes with a small amount of cannabinoids to relieve their addiction."
Tan recalled, "I had dinner with him before, and he smoked Golden Leaf cigarettes both times. Once you get used to a cigarette, you don't easily switch. But the cigarettes he's smoking now have no brand, and the tobacco is loose, so it's unlikely to be from a legitimate tobacco company. So your guess is quite plausible."
Jiang Ni was somewhat surprised: "You remember what kind of cigarettes he smoked?"
Tan Wen smiled and said, "I've said it before, I have a very good memory."
"Impressive," Jiang Ni continued, "but if it's just this much intake, it doesn't seem likely to cause him to hallucinate while driving and thus engage in dangerous driving behavior."
Tan Wen pondered for a while, then looked at her and said, "What if the order were reversed?"
"What do you mean?" Jiang Ni asked, confused.
"In other words, we're assuming that day was when he first started trying drugs," Tan explained, "or that it was an accidental use. He was unaware of it at the time and only became addicted afterward."
Du Yucheng had countless bad friends, and after spending so much time in those chaotic places, it wouldn't be surprising if he picked up some unclean things.
However, Tan Wen was more inclined to believe that he had accidentally taken the drug, because Du Yunhui only had this one precious son, and he must know how harmful drugs are. Du Yucheng had been messing around outside for so many years without crossing that line, which must have been because Du Yunhui had repeatedly warned him.
"I checked, and Du Yucheng has been going to Tianheng to study recently, which proves that Du Yunhui wants him to gradually take over the company. At this critical juncture, he is unlikely to overstep the line. The most likely scenario is that he has been set up by someone else."
Whether it's Tianheng's rival companies or enemies that Du Yucheng himself has brought upon himself, there are definitely quite a few people who want to get rid of him.
Jiang Ni pondered, "Hmm, this logic does seem more correct. After all, his mental state doesn't seem like that of a long-term drug user, and the fact that he can alleviate his cravings simply by smoking 'drug cigarettes' proves that he's only recently started using them."
Tan Wen lowered his eyes: "This thing is very fast; it will only get worse."
"Then this case has a new breakthrough. Although my country's laws on drunk driving are more explicit and direct, if it is confirmed that he was driving under the influence of drugs, he will face more charges. Even if the families of the other two victims issue letters of understanding, it will not have much effect," Jiang Ni said firmly. "He must pay the price for his arrogance."
Thinking of the elderly people from the Wang and Tong families and that house that exuded happiness, Jiang Ni felt as if a lingering gloom had settled over her heart.
Sensing her low spirits, Tan changed the subject: "Are you done with your work, sister? It's still early today, how about we play some games?"
Jiang Ni remembered that she still owed him a game, so she nodded and agreed: "Okay, I'll go get my phone."
She stood up: "Let's go play in the living room."
When Aunt Zhou came out after cleaning, she found the two of them sitting side by side on the living room sofa, with Jiang Ni craning her neck to watch Tan Wen operate his phone.
Her tone was tinged with resentment: "Isn't your training usually very strict? How come your gaming skills have improved instead of decreased?"
"Sister, there's something called 'talent'," Tan teased her.
Tan Wen taught her how to play this shooting game. Before she met Tan Wen, Jiang Ni had never downloaded any game apps on her phone. She initially just wanted to use a "reward system" to motivate Tan Wen to study. Tan Wen improved by more than 100 places in his first monthly exam. Jiang Ni asked him what reward he wanted, and he said that she should play games with him every weekend.
It was around that time that Jiang Ni discovered that besides learning cooking skills, she also had shortcomings.
Aunt Zhou heard the continuous "bang bang bang" of gunfire. Tan Wen's game had reached the final round. He himself was still very calm, but Jiang Ni, the bystander, was even more nervous and focused.
"Someone's coming downstairs."
"A grenade has been thrown in."
"There are so many people, why don't you climb over from the back and go ahead first?"
Her attention was completely focused on Tan Wen's phone, and she didn't realize that half of her body was leaning against Tan Wen. Tan Wen was distracted and had no intention of dealing with the enemy. He was fighting purely on instinct, and his mind was completely on her.
It smells good.
So soft.
Even when they frown, they look so cute.
Her lips are so beautiful, and she even has a cupid's bow. They look so kissable.
Being too distracted will naturally result in a crushing defeat.
Then Jiang Ni found an opportunity to retaliate, her fox-like eyes filled with a hint of mockery: "Looks like your talent isn't that high, Officer Tan."
Hold.
Isn't this deliberately seducing him?
Tan Wen felt he was about to become horny at an inopportune time.
So he jumped up, tugged at his shirt, and said, "I need to go to the restroom."
Without his support, Jiang Ni almost fell over, but fortunately she reacted quickly, and Tan Wen immediately reached out to help her, preventing her from actually falling.
"Oh, go ahead, it's getting late, I'm going to sleep," Jiang Ni stood up as well. "Goodnight."
"Good night." Tan asked hurriedly.
Aunt Zhou smiled and struck up a conversation with Jiang Ni: "Miss, you even play video games? I've never seen you play before!"
Jiang Ni put her phone away and replied, "I can't figure out how to play by myself. I only played today because Tan Wen was with me."
Jiang Ni herself is not addicted to games; frankly, she only plays them to appease children.
Aunt Zhou understood her subtext and blurted out what was on her mind: "You are so good to Tan Wen."
After saying that, her heart skipped a beat, fearing that Jiang Ni might misunderstand something. But Jiang Ni didn't think anything was wrong and even smiled, saying, "Kids need to be coaxed and pampered."
"He's so tall, and he's already twenty years old. He's nowhere near 'young'," Aunt Zhou thought to herself, but she agreed aloud, "That's right, that's right."
"Child" Tan Wen locked the door, strode into the bathroom, and went to do something "bad" that was anything but childish.
As usual, the lights were off, only the shower was turned on.
Darkness is the best disguise, giving desires the opportunity to run rampant.
"Sister... oh..."
