Chapter 24 A Grand Escape Amidst Hope
"We've probably been targeted; Herzog has made a move."
Guan Luo pressed the sticky note on the table; he was still not quite used to communicating by hand.
"Norma, is the academy ready to provide support?"
"The academy's cruise ship has arrived at the port," Norma replied.
"Could you help us plan the shortest path? Thank you... senior sister."
The TV screen flickered and went black, then suddenly lit up again.
The map on the TV screen zoomed in, and a new blue line appeared.
First, cut along the Kanda River onto the main road, then turn into the narrow alleys of the old commercial street, then pass through an abandoned warehouse area, and finally rush into the port highway.
A line of small text popped up next to it:
"The entire route is 33 kilometers long, and the estimated travel time is not provided. All 52 traffic lights along the route have been taken over."
Recommendation: Do not slow down.
Guan Luo glanced at the map and remembered most of it. Anyway, Norma could provide real-time updates via her phone, so it didn't matter.
The four of them walked quickly toward the parking lot, Uesugi Kotsushi not even bothering with his ramen stall.
Genji got into the driver's seat and closed the car door.
Uesugi Kotsushi had already sat in the passenger seat and was adjusting the seat, as he hadn't been comfortable being squeezed in earlier.
Genji started the engine and glanced at his father.
I was about to ask if we should fasten our seatbelts, but before I could say it, Guan Luo and Erii in the back seat had already fastened them.
Uesugi Kotsushi wasn't wearing a seatbelt. He leaned back in his seat, crossed his arms, and looked straight ahead. Genji Shiki looked away and shifted gears.
The Maybach sped out of the garage, its tires screeching as they scraped against the exit ramp.
Genjiro turned the steering wheel with his left hand and pushed the Spider Cutter from his knee into the car door storage compartment with the handle facing outwards.
In the end, Uesugi Koshi buckled up his seatbelt; the car was going too fast.
In the rearview mirror, three black sedans turned out from the street corner, their headlights all off.
Norma's voice came from below the dashboard: "Go straight, the red light is off."
Yuan Zhisheng stepped on the gas.
The red light ahead turned green the instant the Maybach approached, and vehicles on both sides of the intersection slammed on their brakes as soon as they started moving, horns blaring incessantly.
The black sedan following behind rushed into the intersection, and a bus on the right suddenly started moving, its entire body blocking the middle of the road.
The black sedan didn't have time to turn around, and its front end crashed into the side of the bus, the sound of metal tearing echoing for two streets.
The second black sedan bypassed the accident site and accelerated to catch up.
"Turn right ahead, the old commercial street is ahead."
The Maybach turned into the narrow alley, with less than a hand's width between the sides of the car and the wall.
Cardboard boxes piled up on the street were knocked over by the rearview mirror, and cardboard and styrofoam flew around behind the car.
The black sedan following behind turned in, and the GG sign at the alley entrance suddenly lit up, its power supply running at overclock, emitting a blinding light that made it impossible to open one's eyes.
The black car instinctively slammed on the brakes, and the right-side rearview mirror slammed into the wall, sending up a long streak of sparks.
At the end of the alley is a T-junction.
As the Maybach sped out of the alley, Norma turned on all three red lights at the intersection.
The cross traffic surged into the intersection without warning, forcing the second black sedan to brake suddenly, only to be struck broadside by a small truck carrying fresh produce.
After leaving the commercial street, the Maybach sped up a section of embankment road.
For another ten kilometers or so, the road widens, traffic decreases, and the buildings on both sides become shorter and sparser.
Guan Luo looked back.
There were no headlights chasing him for the time being, but he knew that the road ahead would not be unobstructed, and Herzog would not just chase without blocking his path.
Sure enough, at the end of the embankment road, seven black cars were parked side by side on the road, their headlights all on, illuminating the road like an open-air stage.
More than twenty shadow warriors stood in front of the car, some holding short knives, others empty-handed.
The leader wore a Noh mask and had no weapon, but his aura was extremely oppressive. His muscles were bulging, and his skin had a dark metallic sheen, indicating that he had activated a body-enhancing incantation.
Genji released the accelerator to prepare to slow down, and the Maybach began to slow down.
"Don't stop," came Uesugi Kotsu's voice from the passenger seat.
Yuan Zhisheng turned his head to the side.
Uesugi was unbuckling his seatbelt, his movements unhurried, like someone untying an apron when closing up at a ramen stand.
The click of the seatbelt retracting into the doorpost was crisp and clear in the quiet carriage.
"I'll get out, you step on the gas."
"Father," Yuan Zhisheng said. He paused for a moment after the word came out, but he didn't take it back.
"I'll do it."
Uesugi glanced at him.
There was a fleeting smile in that look.
He simply reached out and patted Genjiro's shoulder lightly.
Uesugi Kotsushi opened the car door, and the sound of the wind rushed in, making the rest of his sentence somewhat muffled: "What's twenty-odd? Step on the gas."
Genji gritted his teeth, slowed the car down to 30 miles per hour, and prepared to let Uesugi Kotsugi get out of the car.
The passenger door was already open.
But before the car could slow down, Uesugi Koshi, bracing himself against the door frame with one hand, was thrown off his seat, his canvas shoes scraping against the asphalt.
The moment of landing, the knees bend slightly, the body leans forward, and then it's like an arrow released from a bow.
Uesugi was ahead of the Maybach, and the figure wearing an apron was accelerating.
With each step, a shallow pit was created in the asphalt, and cracks extended from the sole of the shoe outwards.
The apron stretched into a straight line in the wind.
The Maybach was accelerating at 30 mph, but Uesugi was even faster. He charged into the Shadow Warriors' formation like a cannonball crashing into a glass wall.
The one at the very front was a shadow warrior with enhanced body. Before he could even raise his arm, Uesugi Kotsu's knee had already slammed into his chest.
The sound of breaking ribs was drowned out by the wind. The man flew out and crashed into his companion behind him, and the two rolled into a heap.
A shadow warrior is wielding a sword on the left.
Uesugi Kotsugu turned to the side, the blade grazing past his apron strap. He grabbed the man's wrist with his other hand, twisted it, the knife fell to the ground, and the man was thrown out and crashed into the hood of the car.
The windshield shattered into a spiderweb pattern, and before the alarm could even sound, he had already stepped over the hood and charged toward the third person.
Relying solely on the enhancement of his body from the dragon blood, without using any incantations, he utterly crushed the shadow warriors transformed from hybrids.
These shadow warriors may not have the same level of spiritual power as when they were alive, or even be significantly weaker, but their physical abilities are greatly enhanced.
A road was forcibly torn open.
Between the seven cars parked side by side, Uesugi Kokiyo cleared a lane. He stood at the entrance of the lane and glanced at the Maybach.
"Walk."
Yuan Zhisheng floored the accelerator.
The Maybach roared past him, passing through the gap between the seven cars, leaving a few drops of splattered blood on the windshield, which were then brushed aside by the wipers.
Looking out the rear window, Guan Luo saw more headlights approaching from the distance, at least a dozen vehicles, surging in from the other end of the embankment road.
Uesugi looked down at his blood-stained hands, wiped them on his apron, then looked up, took a step forward, and blocked the way.
