I'm in Wuha, and the whole internet is shipping me and Song Yuqi as a couple.
Chapter 153 Bystander: Am I witnessing history?
Jiang Che leaned back on the bar stool, watching Song Yuqi's payment sign sway in the sunlight, a smile still playing on his lips.
She wore a low ponytail today, with stray hairs sticking to her temples in a messy mess from the sea breeze, and a thin layer of sweat on her forehead.
But her smile was even more dazzling than last night's fireworks show.
"Sing two more songs, please."
Song Yuqi leaned over, placed the receipt on the guitar case lid, and rubbed the edge of the receipt a couple of times with her fingers.
"After you finish singing, I'll treat you to coconut jelly. I checked out the place on the island, it's incredibly delicious."
Jiang Che raised his chin, looking at her earnest expression as she compared prices, and said, "You're using the money I earned to treat me to something to eat?"
Song Yuqi paused for a moment, then raised her chin confidently.
"What else? Is there a problem with your girlfriend spending your money?"
She said the word "girlfriend" quickly and softly, almost swallowing the last syllable.
But Jiang Che heard it clearly.
He didn't reply, but simply raised his free hand and gently patted the back of Song Yuqi's head.
"Come stand over here."
Song Yuqi was stunned for a moment.
Jiang Che turned slightly to the side, moving the guitar half an inch onto his left knee to give her half a body length of space.
"It's already officially announced, why are you standing so far away? If we cut the footage later, people will say we're making a script."
He didn't look at her when he said this; he ran his finger back and forth across the character mark twice, his attitude incredibly casual.
But Song Yuqi's ears were burning red.
She pursed her lips and walked over, standing to his right, her whole body ramrod straight, as nervous as if she were receiving an award on her first day on stage.
The surrounding audience was already in an uproar.
The screams had barely subsided when news of the two people being identified spread throughout the entire street.
Newcomers in the back row were still tiptoeing to squeeze in, while the hands in the front row were densely raised to form a wall, some recording vertically, some live streaming horizontally, the sounds of shutters and discussions mingling together.
"Jiang Che! Sing 'As You Wish'!"
"Sing 'Heart Wall'! I love that song so much!"
"Romantic Love! The stage version! Please!"
Shouts came from all directions, and Song Yuqi was so shocked that she took half a step back, her back bumping against Jiang Che's shoulder.
She tried to move forward, but Jiang Che's elbow had already been placed subtly on the side of the guitar, keeping her at a safe distance.
The crowd was still shouting, each voice louder than the last.
Jiang Che held the neck of the instrument with his left hand and raised his right hand, pressing it lightly forward.
"No old songs today."
A girl in the front row, holding a selfie stick, was so anxious that she kept stomping her feet.
"What else should we sing, Lyricist, if not old songs?"
Jiang Che didn't look at her, but turned his head and focused his gaze on Song Yuqi, who was standing to his right.
Song Yuqi happened to be looking at him too.
Their eyes met, her eyelashes trembled, and she subconsciously wanted to turn her face away, but she couldn't.
Jiang Che withdrew his gaze and turned to the cell phone cameras still recording in front of the crowd, his tone calm.
"Sing a song I just finished writing."
He paused, his fingers hovering over the strings without actually plucking them.
"For her."
The entire room fell silent for a full two seconds.
The next moment, a cheer even louder than when their identities were recognized erupted.
Some people stomped their feet, some jumped up, and the girl in the front row with the selfie stick squatted down, covered her face, and screamed.
"A new song? A new song that Jiang Che wrote for Song Yuqi?"
Am I witnessing history?
"Can someone pinch me to make sure I'm not dreaming?"
Song Yuqi stood there, the acrylic plaque in her hand so tightly that the edges were almost worn with her fingerprints.
She received no prior notice.
Jiang Che hasn't mentioned a single word to her since this morning.
She looked down at his slender fingers resting on the strings, his nails trimmed short, and a thin callus from playing the piano on the side of his index finger.
Now, these hands are about to play a song that belongs only to her in front of everyone.
Jiang Che gave the surrounding noise no time to react.
His right index and middle fingers landed on the strings at the same time, crisply and cleanly plucking out the first set of notes.
The prelude carries the languid and relaxed feeling unique to a summer evening.
The addition of muted notes in the second section instantly brings the entire intro to life.
The crowd had quieted down; everyone's attention was now captivated by the melody.
Several young people who seemed to know music looked at each other, their expressions changing from excitement to seriousness.
He held his phone still, but his eyes were fixed intently on Jiang Che's hand movements as he pressed the strings.
Jiang Che raised his head.
He didn't look at the audience, the camera, or anyone else.
He only looked at Song Yuqi, who was standing to his right and whose breathing was obviously erratic.
"Your eyes are wider than the sea."
"The sunset kisses the bubbles."
"Being by your side is the most reassuring moment."
The singing has no fancy techniques from the very first word; there are no high notes or vibrato.
It's just the simplest narrative style, like someone speaking.
Song Yuqi's cheeks burned, and her breathing became completely erratic.
She pressed the acrylic sign against her chest to block out her rising and falling breaths.
This song has no arrangement, no backing track, only Jiang Che's voice and a guitar.
Every word fell clearly into her ears.
The rain at Jiefangbei in Chongqing, the shrimp at a night market in Wuhan, and the water curtain at the Seoul Dome.
Those biases he never voiced have now all become lyrics.
The girl in the front row holding her phone was so shaky that she couldn't keep the image steady.
"These lyrics are amazing," she whispered to her companion. "This isn't singing, it's reciting a love letter in the street."
The boy with glasses pushed up his glasses and quickly typed on his phone.
"Jiang Che's creative ability is terrifying."
An older man in the back row poked his head out and shouted.
"Young man! What's the name of this song?"
Jiang Che's strumming motion didn't stop; the rhythm remained steady.
He turned his head to look at Song Yuqi.
"What's your name?" he asked her.
Song Yuqi stood there, stunned.
"You wrote the song, and you're asking me about it?" she asked instinctively.
Jiang Che smiled.
"It's written for you, so of course you decide."
An exaggerated commotion erupted from the crowd.
The girl with the selfie stick squatted down and screamed.
"Kill me to entertain you!"
"Who can withstand this?!"
"Song Yuqi, hurry up and choose a name! If you don't, we'll choose one for you!"
Song Yuqi was so startled by the shouts around her that she took a half step back.
She glared at Jiang Che, trying to mask her panic with fierceness.
"Don't try to shift the blame; I'm terrible at naming things."
Jiang Che tapped his fingers twice on the guitar soundboard, creating a lively rhythm.
"Take whatever you like, you can call it 'Payment Card' if you want."
Song Yuqi was furious and raised the sign in her hand as if to hit him.
"You dare try calling that!"
Jiang Che laughed out loud and plucked the strings again.
"Then let's call it 'The Last Fireworks of Summer Night'."
"Iced beer replaces unspoken disappointment."
When I looked up, you were looking at me.
"The dazzling fireworks of a summer night are reflected in my eyes."
