Chapter 57 Lin Ting's Strategic Planning
Temporary prefabricated houses for the municipal square project team.
Lin Ting sat behind his desk, twirling two red walnuts in his hands. The walnuts made a clicking sound as they spun in his palm.
Lin Fei pushed open the iron door of the prefab house and strode in. He was still wearing the reflective vest typical of construction sites, and his forehead was covered in sweat.
"Grandpa, the lookouts on the outskirts of National Highway 104 called. Fifteen heavy trucks with fake license plates have passed the city toll station and are heading straight for our county."
The carriage was covered with a tarpaulin, and it was full of people carrying weapons. Lin Fei spoke very quickly.
Lin Ting didn't stop, switching the walnuts to his left hand. "He's heading towards the city square."
"At their speed, they should be able to get into the city in twenty minutes at most. Should we call the police, or have Zhongtang's brothers block them at the intersection?" Lin Fei clenched his fist.
Lin Ting picked up the enamel teacup on the table and took a sip of warm water.
"Leng Qiu has lost all his cards and is sending people to overturn the table. Fifteen heavy trucks, carrying a maximum of five hundred people." Lin Ting put down his teacup, the tea leaves at the bottom sticking to the cup.
The door to the prefab house was pushed open again. Lin Dayou walked in wearing a yellow hard hat, his work clothes covered in cement dust.
"Grandpa, all two hundred machines are in place. The cement mixer is also full of water. As long as you give the word, the first pile can be driven in right now," Lin Dayou reported loudly.
Lin Ting looked at Lin Dayou. "Stop working for now. Someone's coming to cause trouble."
Lin Dayou's eyes widened, and he ripped off his safety helmet and slammed it on the table.
"Anyone who's got nothing better to do than mess with the Lin family's construction site, I'll take a few hundred brothers from Yitang to meet them."
"With a pickaxe handle in hand, I guarantee I'll throw everyone, car and all, into the moat of the county town to feed the fish." Lin Dayou rolled up his sleeves.
Lin Ting waved his hand.
"If 500 professional thugs who receive resettlement allowances enter the city and start fighting on the streets, the shops and people's cars will suffer."
"Our Lin family is now doing legitimate construction work; we can't let this cause a public uproar." Lin Ting interlaced his fingers and rested them on the table.
Lin Dayou stood there, stunned. "Grandpa means we should let them in and smash things?"
"We stopped them at the county border. Didn't they come in a heavy truck?" Lin Ting pointed outside the door.
"Go and bring all the tracked vehicles and excavators from our Lin family's construction site in the county there to block the road into the city."
Lin Dayou's eyes lit up, and he grabbed the safety helmet from the table and put it on his head. "Understood."
He turned and ran out of the prefab house, picked up the walkie-talkie hanging on his waist, and tuned the channel to the Lin family's full-band broadcast.
"Everyone stop what you're doing. At the Jiangjing Haoting construction site, all one hundred excavators were shut down and driven onto the main road."
"Old Zhao, unload all the soil from the truck beds of your convoy, assemble with empty trucks." Lin Dayou shouted into the walkie-talkie.
The walkie-talkie crackled with static, followed by responses from various foremen.
"Received. Jiangjing Mansion will dispatch a vehicle immediately."
"Old Zhao received it. One hundred dump trucks will be on the street in three minutes."
Lin Dayou continued shouting, "The bulldozers are coming down the dirt road from the quarry on the back mountain."
At the municipal square, two hundred heavy excavators and newly purchased cement mixers were all deployed. Heading towards the county border crossing on National Highway 104, they were moving at full speed.
A burst of rapid responses erupted from the walkie-talkie.
The deafening roar of machinery echoed through the streets of the county town in the afternoon.
The iron gate of the Jiangjing Haoting construction site was wide open, and Old Zhao sat in the cab of the first dump truck, honking the horn furiously.
One hundred heavy trucks loaded with sand and gravel filed out, their huge wheels leaving deep tire tracks on the asphalt road.
Outside the municipal square, two hundred heavy excavators started up simultaneously, their diesel engines spewing black smoke from their exhaust pipes.
The tracks whirred, emitting a grating metallic screech. The robotic arm rose high, its massive alloy bucket gleaming in the sunlight.
Ten large concrete mixer trucks were mixed in with the excavator team, their drums turning and making a rumbling sound.
Without any command, hundreds of heavy machines split into three groups and headed straight for National Highway 104 along the main road.
All the private cars along the way stopped on the side of the road to let the other car pass, and the drivers rolled down their windows and took pictures of the exaggerated scene they had never seen before.
Two traffic police officers stood at the intersection, looking at the endless array of heavy trucks and tracked vehicles, and silently put down their batons, locking the green light in the "go" position.
The county boundary highway is a huge funnel, with steep mountain walls on both sides and only four lanes in the middle.
Lin Dayou stood on the tracks of the first excavator, waving a red construction flag in his hand.
"Old Zhao's convoy, park sideways. Front of the cars against rear of the cars, completely blocking all four lanes, don't let even a fly get through," Lin Dayou shouted.
One hundred dump trucks turned their steering wheels, their massive bodies blocking the road, end to end, forming a five-meter-high steel wall.
"Excavators, line up behind, lift all the buckets!" Lin Dayou continued waving the flag.
Two hundred excavators lined up behind the dump trucks, their robotic arms raised to their highest point, their two hundred alloy buckets suspended in mid-air, blocking out the sunlight overhead.
The mixer truck was parked on the outermost edge, and the drum continued to rotate.
Hundreds of Lin family workers and Zhongtang's young men climbed to the top of the machine.
They carried a meter-long solid, extra-large wrench, a crowbar, and a cutting machine, looking down at the mountain path ahead.
Lin Ting sat in the back seat of a black Land Rover. The car was parked at the very back of the excavator array.
He rolled down the car window, lit a cigarette, and the walnuts in his hand continued to crackle.
On the other side of the mountain road.
Fifteen heavy trucks with fake license plates were speeding along the highway.
Lei Hu sat in the passenger seat of the lead SUV, with the car stereo blasting deafening heavy metal music.
He swayed his bald head to the music, the large gold chain around his neck swinging back and forth.
"Brother Tiger, the county border is just two bends ahead. It'll be less than ten minutes to the municipal square," the driver shouted.
Lei Hu exhaled a smoke ring and rested his feet on the dial.
"Once we get there, don't waste time talking. Just drive the car into the construction site. Hit anyone you see, and smash any machine you see."
"That old hag Leng Qiu spent five million; she made that money way too easily." Lei Hu slapped his thigh.
The driver grinned and laughed.
"A bunch of country bumpkins who farm the land, if they saw our five hundred brothers, they'd probably be so scared they'd kneel down and call us grandpa."
Lei Hu took out his phone and looked through photos of the girls at the club.
"We'll finish this in ten minutes, and then we'll take the brothers to the best foot massage place in the city."
The off-road vehicle's engine roared as it led the convoy of heavy trucks behind it through the last bend in the mountain.
The view ahead became clearer.
The driver's smile vanished instantly, and he was completely dumbfounded.
Lift your right foot and slam on the brake pedal.
The tires left a black tire track more than ten meters long on the ground, making an extremely sharp friction sound.
The fourteen heavy trucks behind them braked suddenly, the screeching sound echoing through the valley. Inside the truck beds, the thugs tumbled about, cursing all around.
Lei Hu's head slammed hard against the windshield, leaving a large bump on his forehead.
"Are you looking for death? Do you even know how to drive?" Lei Hu covered his forehead and turned around to curse.
The driver's hands were trembling as he gripped the steering wheel tightly. He pointed ahead, unable to utter a single word.
