The short man closed his eyes and started digging and throwing dirt into the pit.

"Bury it quickly, it will be light in a little over an hour. We need to leave before dawn, we can't stay here any longer."

"It's not safe, let's go somewhere else."

The tall man kept his head down and didn't say a word, burying himself in throwing soil into the pit. Before long, he had buried the person. The sky was beginning to lighten. Without bothering to tamp the soil down properly, he went straight into the house to pack his things.

As dawn broke, the group left the courtyard, splitting up and heading in several directions. The courtyard was then locked up.

*

The rain poured down.

The already loose soil was gradually broken up, and a hand reached out from the bottom of the pit, crawling slowly towards the outside. The physical pain was far less than the resentment in his heart.

After the black wolf crawled out completely, the rain washed the mud off his face and body. His eyes were deep and fixed on one spot, a flash of resentment passing through them.

He staggered to his feet, leaving bloody footprints as he returned to the house. He changed into clean clothes, and feeling that the pain seemed to have lessened, he slowly exhaled.

Wearing a hat, he waited for the donkey cart at the town gate, his voice hoarse: "I need to go to Xiangyang Brigade to see Doctor Wen for treatment. Please take me there quickly, money is negotiable."

"Is five yuan enough? If not, I'll give you ten yuan. Hurry up and take me there."

The old man driving the donkey cart was startled when he saw him vomiting blood: "Young man, why don't you go straight to the hospital? The hospital in town is closer. Why go to the countryside to find a doctor?"

The man looked up, his eyes bleeding, making him look like a vengeful ghost. His face was terrifyingly dark: "I said go where you want to go, and I'll go wherever you want. If you don't have enough money, I'll give it to you. Stop arguing!"

The old man swallowed hard and nodded repeatedly: "Okay, okay, I'll take you to Xiangyang Brigade to find Doctor Wen right away. Don't be impulsive, just sit still."

Good heavens, what is this young man doing? He looks terrifying, his eyes are like he wants to eat people alive.

Black Wolf sat curled up inside the donkey cart, too afraid to move. His mind kept replaying the events of the previous night: the boss had praised him one moment and then poisoned him the next.

Fearing being implicated, they actually ordered him to be buried alive. He wasn't even dead yet! If they had just gone to the hospital and tried, he wouldn't have blamed anyone if the poison couldn't be cured. But they didn't even bother to try.

They've just given up on him. Ha! If they won't save him, can't he save himself? Missions and outposts don't matter anymore. He'll survive by any means necessary.

The donkey cart arrived at the entrance of Jiang Lie's courtyard.

The old man said cautiously, "Young man, we've arrived. This is Doctor Wen's house. Do you think you can walk by yourself? Would you like me to help you inside?"

Black Wolf swallowed hard, got off the donkey cart, limped into the yard, closed the gate, and walked towards the house. He had a gun on his waist, if she didn't want to talk.

Then I'll have to use some tough measures. He has family waiting for him; he can't die, he absolutely can't die here.

Hearing footsteps inside, Jiang Lie looked up through the window and spotted the gloomy-looking man. He looked at him warily and said, "Wife, someone's here. I'll go out and see."

She opened the door and stepped out, her gaze falling on him: "Who are you? Who are you looking for?"

Black Wolf said in a hoarse voice, "I'm here to talk to Doctor Wen about the antidote. I came to your house last night. I didn't come for any other reason than to discuss a business deal with you."

Before he could finish speaking, Jiang Lie had already rushed in front of him, grabbed him by the neck, and said with murderous intent in his eyes: "How dare you come here?"

Ignoring the threat at his neck, Black Wolf managed to utter, "My name is Zhou Dahai. I'm here to discuss a business deal. I can earn you merit in exchange for my antidote."

"You wouldn't dare kill me. Someone saw me come here. If I die, you'll go to jail. Do you dare?"

"I'm risking betraying the organization to come here and discuss a deal with you. After it's done, give me the antidote, and I'll leave here and live under an assumed name. You'll get the credit and the benefits—a win-win situation."

Jiang Lie stared at him, slowly loosening his grip: "What do you mean by 'organization'? Spies? Or something else?"

Zhou Dahai coughed: "Let's talk inside. Some things are not suitable for more people to know. Don't worry, I won't play any tricks on you. Right now, I just want to get rid of the poison and go home alive."

"Okay, come in."

The three sat at the table, and Wen Yao looked at him: "Speak, what business do you want to discuss with me?"

"You must promise to give me the antidote first, otherwise I won't tell you."

"Ha, you're already here. Did you think you had a choice? You can only trust me. I'm not the kind of person who goes back on his word. If the business you want to discuss is valuable enough, I'll give you the antidote without any problem."

Zhou Dahai said in a deep voice, "I am one of the Japanese spies who have infiltrated China. Our mission is to find a way to collect ancient Chinese medicine prescriptions and bring them back."

"If the medicine is very effective, we'll monopolize the business and then sell it to you at a high price later to make money and gain benefits. In short, we're only responsible for collecting the prescriptions, not for assassinations or anything else."

When they heard that he was a spy, Jiang Lie and his companion's pupils contracted slightly. They hadn't expected him to be like this. They thought they could come back to find the antidote, but he chose life over profit.

Wen Yao thought for a moment, but still felt something was amiss. She calmly said, "Something's not right. If you're a spy, those spies are specially trained and would never be exposed, even if they die."

"Why would you voluntarily come here and expose yourself? Aren't you afraid that one of your contacts will be caught, and then your identity will be exposed, and you will still die?"

Zhou Dahai nodded: "Of course I know. Originally, I was wholeheartedly working for my superiors and the Empire. But seeing that they don't treat me like a human being, I was just poisoned last night and haven't died yet."

"The boss actually had me buried alive. If it hadn't rained today, I would be dead. He only did it because he was afraid of taking me to the hospital, afraid of exposing my identity, and afraid that the base would be destroyed."

He couldn't help but laugh maniacally: "Haha, it's ridiculous! Why is it that I give so much, all the benefits go to them, and I'm going to be buried alive by them? They won't even try to save me."

"Since that's the case, then nobody should live. I want them to die before me. Once they're all locked up, I can change my face and go home. Who will know who I am then?"

Wen Yao and Jiang Lie exchanged a glance, tacitly understanding each other. Since they were spies, they absolutely could not let them go. They had to seize such an important clue and hand it over to the authorities.

If we can attract the attention of higher-ups and protect the ancient medicine prescriptions as soon as possible, that would be truly meaningful.

Zhou Dahai looked at them and said in a deep voice, "I've said everything I need to say. When are you going to give me the antidote? Don't worry, I won't run away. I want to see them all arrested."

"Otherwise, if even one of them runs away, I might be exposed prematurely. If the people back home find out that I have betrayed the country, my family will definitely suffer. I can't afford to take that risk."
