Double-Cut During the War of Resistance: My Wife Came from 1937

Section Chief Zhao looked at Ma Hongwei and asked, "May I ask how to address you, comrade?"

"My name is Ma Hongwei. You can call me Comrade Ma or Comrade Hongwei, either is fine."

Ma Hongwei replied.

Once these people start using computers, they will be strictly protected and restricted by the Eighth Route Army. They will never be allowed to leave, and he is not afraid that his true origins will be exposed.

"Then I'll call you Comrade Ma!"

Section Chief Zhao took a stack of papers from his subordinate and handed them to Ma Hongwei, saying, "These are the coded messages we've been monitoring recently from the Yamazaki Infantry Battalion and several other units."

Ma Hongwei took the paper, saw that it contained sets of encrypted numbers, and then asked, "Which ones belong to the Yamazaki Battalion?"

Section Chief Zhao separated the Yamazaki Brigade and placed it aside separately.

Ma Hongwei nodded and said, "Then let's begin!"

As he spoke, he took out his phone from his pocket and started taking pictures of them.

After all the ciphertext of the Yamazaki Brigade had been photographed, Ma Hongwei used Bluetooth to send the photos to his computer.

"Is this a photograph?"

"Is that a camera he's holding?"

The onlookers were incredibly curious as they watched Ma Hongwei constantly operating his phone.

These people were all talented individuals from the Eighth Route Army; many of them were progressive students in the past and had naturally seen cameras.

Although cameras nowadays have shrunk considerably and are no longer as bulky as they used to be.

However, film is still required for shooting, and the film still needs to be developed after shooting.

They had never seen a camera that could take pictures directly before.

Hearing what everyone was saying, Ma Hongwei explained, "All you need to know is that this is a mobile phone; it can take photos and videos."

"A cell phone? It can take pictures and record videos?"

Section Chief Yang couldn't help but ask, "Comrade Hongwei, this is the first time I've ever seen a mobile phone. I wonder which country it's made in?"

Before Ma Hongwei could speak, Commander Liu reminded him, "Don't ask questions you shouldn't ask. We'll let you know when we have the chance."

Ma Hongwei glanced at everyone and said, "You will all be provided with these phones in the future, so that you can easily upload information to your computers."

"Can we provide that too?"

Upon hearing this, a younger cipher technician immediately beamed with joy.

Ma Hongwei moved a stool, sat down at the table, and began operating the computer.

"I'll try it myself first. As for teaching you how to use the computer, I'll do that later!"

As Ma Hongwei spoke, he began to use AI to extract the encrypted numbers from the photo.

He extracted this information, quickly compared it with the photos, and then imported it all into the analysis system.

"What an amazing machine!"

At this moment, a deep sense of solemnity appeared on the faces of Section Chief Yang and Section Chief Zhao.

The initial disdain vanished instantly.

It's quite astonishing that the other party was able to extract those ciphertext numbers so quickly.

While operating the equipment, Ma Hongwei asked, "There are 10 bulletins from the Yamazaki Battalion, right?"

"That's right!"

Section Chief Zhao nodded and said, "10 short reports, a total of 540 valid three-digit codes."

Ma Hongwei took the lead in importing the analysis system and analyzing these data.

Soon, the questionable code points were marked.

Furthermore, it automatically preprocesses and archives, removing all invalid characters and arranging them according to radio call sign and time sequence.

Looking at the information displayed above, Ma Hongwei saw that the single code appeared most frequently, 42 times, and the double code appeared a total of 9 times.

The final determination was: highly overlapping, indicating a static, fixed mapping password.

"Ha, we're pretty lucky. This Yamazaki Battalion is using a fixed set of missing codes!"

Ma Hongwei chuckled and said to the assembled leaders, "They clearly don't respect us Chinese people, so they're taking this easy way out. If nothing unexpected happens, I'll be able to crack it in a moment!"

As he spoke, he continued operating the machine.

"How could they crack Japanese coded messages so easily?"

Upon hearing Ma Hongwei's words, both the communications department and the confidential department were somewhat skeptical.

They even needed to use codes to crack their own telegrams.

How could the other side, without the Japanese military codes, crack them so quickly using only these ciphertexts?

They stared at the computer screen, watching the text that kept appearing on its own, and found that many of the words were ambiguous, as if they had been deliberately simplified.

But those leaders were willing to believe it.

Because they knew Ma Hongwei's true background.

However, they did not put pressure on Ma Hongwei, but waited on the sidelines.

They also wanted to see if Ma Hongwei's method was feasible.

"Crackling and popping!"

For a moment, the room was completely quiet, with only the sound of Ma Hongwei typing on the keyboard.

……

Just over half an hour later, Ma Hongwei began converting the latest batch of three-digit codes into Japanese.

[Yamazaki Squad, personnel, horses, and rations replenished, Nikan Suru reports]

[I. Current troop strength: 28 officers and colonels, 1142 corporals and enlisted personnel, sufficient combat personnel, no shortage of personnel]

II. Horses: 216 military horses...

[…Preparations for departure to the designated assembly point are complete five days from now.]

[Captain Yamazaki's Seal]

"Is that all?"

Ma Hongwei chose to translate the Japanese telegram directly.

Soon, the Japanese telegram was translated into Chinese.

He was worried that the leaders wouldn't understand it, so he translated it into Traditional Chinese.

"call!"

Ma Hongwei looked at the officers waiting nearby and called out, "Commenders, I have translated the latest Japanese coded message!"

"You've deciphered it already?"

Upon hearing this, all the leaders gathered around.

"I'll read it!"

Deputy Division Commander Xiao, who was closest, read aloud: "This is the report on the completion of personnel, horse, ammunition, and food resupply for the Yamazaki Battalion!"

"1. Current troop strength: 28 officers and 1142 soldiers, all at full strength with no vacancies, ready for combat."

"2. Horses: 216 warhorses and 97 supply horses, all in good condition and capable of long-distance marches."

"3. Ammunition supply: Rifle ammunition replenished to 1.5 combat loads; light and heavy machine gun ammunition to 2 combat loads; grenade launcher ammunition fully replenished; infantry artillery grenades to be prepared with 120 rounds of ammunition."

"4. Food and rations: All personnel carry 12 days' worth of individual rations, and the supply depot will have an additional 3 days' worth of rations in reserve."

"5. Troop Status: The entire unit has been replenished and reorganized with equipment, ammunition, and rations. Five days later, it will set off for the designated assembly point according to the pre-arranged plan and await orders to attack."

"Captain Yamazaki!"

After reading it aloud, Deputy Division Commander Xiao couldn't help but say, "It seems like the Japanese are really going to make their move!"
