Zombie Life Begins in Hongxi Village
Chapter 3, First Time Drinking Blood
Five kilometers away in Ping'an County, the lights were on.
Unlike the early bedtimes in the countryside, the nightlife here is just beginning.
Although it was a region where ordinary people's lives were in ruins, there was always a group of privileged people who were unaffected by natural disasters or man-made calamities, no matter the era.
Lin Yi appeared directly on the military police parade ground.
One second he was breaking free of the rope in the woodshed, and the next he was standing in a completely unfamiliar open space.
His eyes were fixed on the guard post, and a low gurgling sound came from his throat.
Two men in saffron-colored military uniforms stood beside the guard post.
One of them was leaning against a pillar smoking, the cigarette butt flickering in the darkness.
Another one, clutching a Type 38 rifle, was dozing off with his head down.
Neither of them noticed that a person had suddenly appeared on the playground.
The one smoking is named Kameda, a sergeant, thirty-seven years old this year. He spent six years on the battlefield during the invasion of China, and his hands are stained with the blood of countless Chinese people.
The one who was dozing off was called Zhao Si. He was a puppet soldier, a puppet Manchukuo man, who made a living by following the local officials. He had just helped collect two cartloads of grain during the day and was exhausted.
Lin Yi sniffed.
The blood flowing through those two bodies smelled different from what he had smelled in the woodshed earlier.
The blood of the neighboring villager was clean and warm, carrying the scent of soil and firewood.
The blood of these two people smelled of an indescribable, foul odor, like spoiled pork.
But his body wasn't picky about food, and the last bit of consciousness he had left vanished along with that dung-colored military uniform.
Roar!
Lin Yi roared to the sky. The sound was a bit like a tiger, a bit like an elephant, but somewhere in between—a roar that sent chills down one's spine.
The cigarette butt in Kameda's hand fell to the ground. Zhao Si suddenly opened his eyes, and both of them trembled in fright at the sound.
Then they couldn't see anything anymore.
Lin Yi transformed into a blur, moving so fast it seemed as if she had vanished from the spot.
The next second, he was already in front of Kameda, his two fangs piercing Kameda's neck with precision.
Before Kameda could even scream, his body convulsed violently twice, his eyes rolled back, and his skin shriveled up at a visible speed.
In less than three seconds, a 140-pound adult was sucked into a skin-and-bones desiccated corpse.
Zhao Si was so frightened that his pants got wet.
He wanted to run, but his legs were as weak as two noodles. He collapsed to the ground, his mouth agape, wide enough to fit an egg, but he couldn't utter a single word.
By the light of the lantern hanging on the guard post, he could see what was in front of him clearly—
A young man wearing a tattered burlap jacket had two three-inch-long fangs in his mouth and his eyes glowed green.
"A monster...a monster!"
Zhao Si finally shouted, but his voice was as shrill as a chicken whose neck had been stepped on.
His hand trembled as he reached for the gun, but before he could even raise it, Lin Yi tossed Kameda's mummified corpse aside and turned to look at him.
Green eyes.
Zhao Si never closed his eyes until he died.
Two screams and a shriek alerted the entire military police encampment.
One by one, the lights in the dormitory came on. Officers shouted in Japanese, soldiers hurriedly put on their shoes and looked for their guns, and the wooden doors were kicked open with a series of loud bangs.
"What is it?"
"Enemy attack!"
"Quick! Get the gun!"
A group of young soldiers rushed out of the dormitory, some carrying Type 38 rifles, some holding pistols, and some even running barefoot without shoes on.
They ran to the playground and, by the light of the moon and the lantern, witnessed a scene that sent chills down their spines.
Two desiccated corpses lay on the ground, shriveled like mummies that had been sun-dried in the desert for decades.
A young man wearing a tattered burlap jacket and barefoot stood in the center of the playground, his two fangs gleaming coldly in the moonlight.
A trickle of blood, not yet dried, still clung to the corner of his mouth.
"shooting!"
Someone shouted, and gunshots rang out instantly.
Bang bang bang!
Seven or eight Type 38 rifles opened fire simultaneously, bullets shooting at Lin Yi from all directions.
Then they witnessed an even more unbelievable scene.
The young man disappeared.
The bullet hit the spot where he had just been standing, sending sparks flying across the gravel ground.
The next second, Lin Yi appeared next to a young man holding a gun, grabbed his neck with one hand, and pulled his head down with the other, then took a bite.
"With a pistol—"
Before he could finish speaking, the second soldier was also bitten.
Lin Yi wasn't running; he was teleporting. Each time his figure disappeared and reappeared, a soldier had two more bloody holes in his neck.
He was like a black lightning bolt, weaving through the crowd, leaving behind only dried corpses and screams in his wake.
"Monster! He's a monster!"
"Fire! Fire!"
"I can't hit him! He's too fast—"
"Aaaaaah!"
Some people broke down, threw down their guns, and ran away.
But running is useless; how can a person's two legs be faster than teleportation?
The fleeing soldier had only run a few meters when Lin Yi appeared in front of him, as if she had been waiting for him there.
"Don't kill—"
One mouthful.
The entire military police parade ground was in complete chaos.
Some tried to organize a counterattack, some went completely mad and kept firing at the air, and some knelt on the ground muttering something like "May Amaterasu protect us."
But no matter what they do, the result is the same.
Lin Yi's fangs will pierce into everyone's neck equally.
Less than a minute.
From the moment Lin Yi let out his first long howl, less than a minute later, the entire military police encampment fell silent.
More than forty mummified corpses lay scattered across the playground. Some were still in the posture of raising their guns to fire, some were curled up on the ground in a begging gesture, and some had turned into mummified corpses halfway through their escape.
Their faces were frozen with the fear of their last moments before death, their features distorted beyond recognition.
Lin Yi stood amidst the corpses, head tilted back, blood still dripping from her two fangs.
The moon peeked out from behind the clouds, its cool light shining on him and illuminating his face, which was half covered in blood.
Then he blinked.
The green light in his eyes gradually faded, and his eyes returned to their normal black and white.
The fangs slowly retracted, and my gums felt a little sore, as if I had just had my braces removed.
Reason surged back into my brain like a tide.
Lin Yi looked down at her hands, then at the dried corpses scattered all around her, and froze.
"Holy crap..."
His first reaction wasn't disgust, but rather—awesome.
Yes, that's awesome.
The feeling was indescribable; it was like finally getting to sleep after staying up for three consecutive nights, or like eating a bowl of hot braised pork after being hungry all day.
Every cell in my body was cheering, every blood vessel was dancing, and I felt light as a feather, as if I could punch through a building.
In fact, he can now punch through a building.
After satiating herself with blood, Lin Yi was a completely different person than before.
No, two zombies.
His previous skinny, overweight physique, caused by a lack of exercise and so thin you could count his ribs, has completely changed.
He looked down at his body—the muscles beneath his linen jacket bulged out, their lines smooth and firm.
This isn't the exaggerated physique you get from eating protein powder at the gym; it's a lean and powerful build, like that of a cheetah.
His chest was broader, his shoulders were thicker, and the biceps and triceps on his arms were clearly defined. Even through his clothes, the outline of his eight-pack abs was faintly visible.
He lifted the hem of his short jacket and took a look, and was surprised by his own reflection.
Six-pack abs, as hard as a washboard.
"This is even more outrageous than getting a super soldier serum injection."
Lin Yi's mind conjured up images of Captain America. Captain America transformed from a skinny stick into a muscular hunk; he transformed from a skinny stick into a zombie-like muscular hunk—the effect was similar, the difference being that he could teleport.
He touched his face. The contours of his face seemed to have changed; his once slightly rounded jawline had become sharper, and the lines of his cheekbones were more defined. His whole face looked as if it had been meticulously retouched.
He saw his reflection in the mirror of a three-wheeled motorcycle.
Although the facial features are still the same, the overall feeling they give is completely different.
He used to rate his looks at a maximum of 65 when he looked in the mirror, barely passing. Now, he'd rate it at least 90 or higher.
