Ling Yuehan stayed in Maocao Village for a few days, stubbornly insisting on staying at Jiang Xing's house, saying that she hadn't had a proper rest. In the end, Jiang Xing let her stay.

I received my first message by carrier pigeon this morning.

Early in the morning, Jiang Xing was squatting in the yard watering the newly transplanted chili seedlings when he heard the door of the east wing creak open. Ling Yuehan came out in her slippers, holding a small roll of paper in her hand, her face looking as if she had just swallowed a fly.

"What's wrong? Whose letter is this?" Jiang Xing glanced at it and then turned back to continue watering the seedlings.

"Chu Yu".

Ling Yuehan unfolded the note and read it aloud: "Brother Ling has been bothering Miss Jiang for several days, which may have been inconvenient. I hope you will return soon." After reading it, he chuckled: "Well, well, you're more nosy than my father."

Jiang Xing didn't reply, but just gave him a teasing look.

Ling Yuehan crumpled the note and stuffed it into her sleeve: "Never mind him. I risked my life for him at the border for half a year, what's wrong with coming back to rest for a couple of days? He knows who I am, why is he pretending to be so righteous?"

Jiang Xing glanced at him, then shook his head and smiled faintly, "Then, Young Master Ling, you should rest well. I'm going to the greenhouse."

As expected, Ling Yuehan did not leave. He was still wandering around the village that day. One has to admire his ability; he is simply a modern-day genius. In just a few days in the village, most of the villagers knew him.

If you see him and don't greet him, he's second only to Jiang Xing in popularity.

The man was very kind and even helped Qingye feed the chickens. He was chased and pecked twice by the rooster, and ran back to the yard squawking loudly, which made Xiaoniu laugh for a long time.

The second message arrived the following day via carrier pigeon.

This time, when Ling Yuehan opened the note, his expression turned grim. He stood in the courtyard staring at the thin piece of paper for a long time, wishing he could bore a hole through the words.

"What did you write?" Jiang Xing came out of the main room and asked casually when he saw him like this.

Ling Yuehan handed her the note. Jiang Xing took it and saw that there was only one line of text on it, and the handwriting was much sharper than the previous note.

"I knew you wouldn't listen. If you don't reply, you'll have to bear the consequences."

After reading the note, Jiang Xing returned it to him: "Perhaps, Young Master Chu really has something he needs you to do. Young Master Ling can reply and ask first before deciding whether to set off."

Ling Yuehan clutched the note and stood under the tree for a while before suddenly cursing, "That brat Chu Yu, when did he learn to pull this trick on me?"

Just then, the sound of horses' hooves came from outside the courtyard. Jiang Xing looked up at the gate and saw Pei Jingshi dismounting from his horse, followed by Vice Minister Chen and a junior official.

Minister Chen was holding a notebook in his hands, looking like he had just returned from the fields, his face still covered in mud.

"Miss Jiang," Minister Chen called out as he entered the courtyard, "I went to see the ventilation openings of your greenhouse today, and there are a few things I don't quite understand. Since it's still early, could you explain them to me again?"

Jiang Xing got up and went out to greet him. Ling Yuehan sat in the main room without moving, slowly drinking tea while looking through the window at the movements in the courtyard.

Pei Jingshi entered the courtyard, his gaze first falling on Jiang Xing, then sweeping across the direction of the main room, and saw the figure sitting behind the window.

His steps faltered almost imperceptibly for a moment, then he resumed as usual, nodded to Jiang Xing, and said nothing more.

Jiang Xing led Minister Chen towards the greenhouse, and Pei Jingshi withdrew his gaze, turned around and followed Jiang Xing and the others.

The explanation inside the greenhouse lasted for almost half an hour. The temperature inside the greenhouse was adjusted to the planting spacing of different vegetables. They asked questions about each item in detail, and Jiang Xing answered in detail, gesturing with his hands and occasionally squatting down to point them out to him.

After Chen Shilang finished asking his questions, he left satisfied with his notebook. The accompanying clerk followed him out of the village, but Pei Jingshi stayed behind.

He stood at the entrance of the greenhouse for a while, as if hesitating about something, before finally walking towards Jiang Xing.

Jiang Xing was bending down to straighten a crooked tomato seedling when he heard footsteps. He straightened up, saw it was him, and said calmly, "Is there anything else, Lord Pei?"

Pei Jingshi opened his mouth, about to say something, when a clear shout suddenly came from the courtyard gate.

"Miss Jiang!"

The two turned to look at each other at the same time. Ling Yuehan strode out of the courtyard, carrying a bundle in her hand and with an outer robe draped over her shoulder, looking like she was about to go out.

He walked closer, nodded to Pei Jingshi as a greeting, then turned to Jiang Xing, his expression much more serious than before.

"I've come to say goodbye."

Jiang Xing was slightly taken aback, then understood: "Are you leaving?"

"Yeah, the old man at home is pressuring me. If I don't go back soon, he's really going to send someone to kidnap me." Ling Yuehan gave a wry smile and slung her bundle over her shoulder. "I was planning to stay a few more days. I haven't had enough of your cooking yet."

At this point, he couldn't help but want to bite Chu Yu a couple of times.

The letter from this morning was torn up, and not long after, another pigeon flew over; the third message by carrier pigeon had arrived.

This time, the bamboo tubes tied to the pigeons' legs were thicker than the previous two times, and the seals were stamped with a small wax seal.

Ling Yuehan hesitated noticeably when she opened the paper. She unfolded it, read only the first line, and then froze.

That letter was written by his father.

Ling Yuehan held the note and read it three times from beginning to end. Her expression changed from disbelief to gritted teeth, and finally to a numbness that was a mixture of frustration and annoyance.

He slammed the note on the stone table, looked up at the sky, and let out a long sigh.

"Good," he said. "Very good."

That brat Chu Yu has no sense of martial ethics. He uses such methods on his brothers, it infuriates him.

Ling Yuehan's face was contorted with rage: "You, Chu Yu, actually sent Old Man Ling to deal with me! Just you wait!"

He then turned and went to the greenhouse.

"I'm going back to Lingnan."

Jiang Xing looked at him in confusion. Ling Yuehan handed him the note in his hand. After reading it, Jiang Xing couldn't help but laugh.

Ling Yuehan glared at her: "You're still laughing?"

"I wasn't laughing." Jiang Xing handed the note back to him, turned around and walked home: "Your father has personally written to urge you, you really should go."
