The garbage dump on the outskirts of the city looked like a rotting behemoth in the night.
The mountains of waste cast distorted shadows in the moonlight, and the air was thick with a nauseating stench.
Several abandoned bulldozers, rusted and worn, sat amidst the garbage heaps, their windows shattered.
The car was covered with dead vines.
Father Constantine pushed open a crooked wire mesh door, the hinges making a sharp, screeching sound.
"Arya, is the signal from the anchor point coming from here?"
"Hmm~"
Sister Arya walked up from behind, the hem of her nun's habit fluttering gently in the night breeze.
She was holding a golden rune stone that was emitting a faint glow in her hand.
"The signal is very stable, right in the center of this area. This place smells disgusting. Our prey is quite selective about where it goes."
Evelyn squeezed between the two of them, tiptoed, and peered into the depths of the junkyard, her little face filled with confusion.
"What's that monster doing in a place like this? Shouldn't it be back in its lair?"
"Perhaps for some things, the garbage dump is the safest place."
Constantine strode into the landfill, his leather shoes crunching on the broken glass and scrap plastic.
"Unnoticed, undisturbed, and no one will give it a second glance."
Arya raised her hand and rubbed her sister's head.
"Sister~ Why can't a junkyard be a den? Your room looks pretty messy too, just like a junkyard~"
"Get lost!"
The three of them walked through the mountain of waste and followed the direction of the anchor point signal deeper into the area.
The further you go in, the higher the piles of garbage become, and the waste mountains on both sides almost close in to form a narrow passage.
The road surface underfoot had changed from cement to compacted debris and mud.
Deep inside the landfill, right next to a cliff, they found a shed.
Calling it a shed would be an exaggeration; several rusty steel pipes were stuck diagonally into the ground.
It was covered with tarpaulins and tattered plastic sheets salvaged from a garbage dump, haphazardly tied together with wire and rope.
Several broken bricks salvaged from construction waste were placed on the roof, presumably to prevent the wind from blowing it off.
Constantine raised his hand to signal the two to stop, then walked to the front of the shed and kicked the wooden door open.
The door slammed to the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust. The three people stood in the doorway, stunned.
There were signs that someone had lived in the shed.
The ground was covered with cardboard salvaged from the waste pile, layer upon layer, flattened and with obvious human-shaped indentations.
Several plastic bottles were piled up in the corner, their mouths cut open to be used as water cups, and a layer of grayish-white limescale had formed on the cup walls.
On a low table made of bricks and planks, there was half a moldy loaf of bread and several empty cans.
They were all washed clean, and some of the cans even had wildflowers picked from the roadside stuck in them.
The flowers had long since withered, their dry petals curled up on the edge of the tin can.
But it was still placed neatly on the low table.
There was a seat made of stacked old tires in the corner.
The tire was stuffed with old clothes and rags salvaged from the garbage dump, and it was pressed into a dent shape.
"Is this the place?" Constantine turned to look at Arya.
Arya closed her eyes, sensed for a moment, and nodded.
"Hmm, the scent of that thing is everywhere here. It must live here, and have lived here for a long time."
Evelyn frowned and took a few steps into the shed, her face full of confusion.
She kicked the tire-made nest at her feet, then glanced at the tin cans with withered flowers on the low table. Her voice was filled with confusion, overshadowing her usual irritability.
"Why...why would a depraved beast live like a human? What kind of hellhole is this? Does it even know what it is?"
She walked up to the low table made of bricks and planks, and her gaze was suddenly fixed on something.
There was a photograph on the wooden board, carefully pressed under a piece of glass that had been salvaged from a garbage dump.
The photo shows a woman.
She had long hair, was in her late twenties, and had a bright, sunny smile with slightly curved eyes that revealed a row of neat white teeth.
She was holding a little girl in her arms, who was wearing a floral dress and had two little braids. The little girl was looking up at her mother.
His little face had the kind of smile that only a loving child has.
The background of the photo is a grassy field, the sun is shining brightly, and the hair of the mother and daughter is being blown slightly by the wind.
Evelyn's fingers tightened slightly as she held the photograph.
She turned to Constantine, holding up the photograph: "Constantine, the Vatican says this anomaly was born from hell, a pure creation of the devil, is that right?"
"Yes." Constantine's voice was steady and calm.
"Without any reason, without personality, without emotion, just a beast that kills on instinct—that's what the Vatican's intelligence says, isn't it?"
"right."
Evelyn held the photo up even higher, a slight crack appearing on her small face.
"Then what's with this photo? Would a beast that crawled out of hell live in a place like this?"
"Would you use a tin can to hold wildflowers? Would you protect a photograph so well by placing it under glass?"
Constantine paused for a few seconds, his gaze sweeping over the photograph, his tone remaining calm.
"This may not be a photo of it; perhaps it picked it up somewhere, perhaps it's a relic left by someone it killed, or perhaps—"
"Maybe?" Evelyn chewed on the word, her tone unusually calm, devoid of anger, only a slowly sinking chill.
Arya stepped out from behind Constantine, took the photo from Evelyn, and glanced at it.
Her expression didn't change much, as if she were analyzing a specimen worth studying.
"Sister, some different species imitate human behavior, not because they understand the meaning of these behaviors, but because they lack a sense of self-identity."
"When they have been lost in the abyss for too long, not knowing who they are or why they exist, they will instinctively pick up the fragments of humanity."
"A photograph, a piece of clothing, and withered flowers stuck in a tin can."
"They are piecing together a shadow that doesn't belong to them, using those scavenged fragments to pretend that they once had a life."
"But the more closely they imitate, the more it proves their emptiness."
She handed the photo to Evelyn, her almond-shaped eyes revealing no sympathy, but rather a mockery.
Is that really the case?
Evelyn took the photo back and glanced down at the woman in the picture, who was smiling brightly in the sunlight.
"Executive Evelyn"
Constantine's voice deepened, no longer an explanation, but a reminder.
"Remember who you are, don't let unnecessary emotions affect you, and don't forget how your body became the way it is now."
Evelyn's fingers tightened suddenly as she held the photo.
She stood there without turning around, and after a few seconds she suddenly let out a cold laugh.
