Bai Ziheng opened his eyes and stared at her blankly.
Reflected in his golden pupils was a face that was unbelievably beautiful.
And that familiar sly smile on her lips.
Then tears welled up in his eyes.
It was unstoppable; the tears streamed down his cheeks and dripped onto the back of Luo Yao's hand that was supporting the back of his head.
He himself didn't realize he was crying.
"Those people... their resentment is far greater than I previously thought."
Bai Ziheng's voice was so hoarse it sounded like it had been sanded on sandpaper.
"I used to think that when a person dies, it's like a lamp going out; once you're dead, nothing remains. But I just felt it."
The suffering a person endures while alive is not wiped away just because they die.
"Their resentment just piled up there for more than a decade, and no one came to demand it back. All the pain they had accumulated in their lives rotted inside that person's stomach, until they became monsters, and no one would even give them a second glance."
"Yeah yeah......"
Luo Yao murmured softly, raising her other hand to gently wipe away his unstoppable tears.
"Everything in this world has its disappointments, but the human obsession is the strongest among all living beings."
"So weak, so fragile..."
She looked down at Bai Ziheng, still with that mischievous smile.
There was also a hint of undisguised tenderness.
This tenderness is only ever shown to this one person.
Just then, a soft sound came from behind.
The door was pushed open, and high heels made a crisp sound as they stepped on the water film.
Qin Shuo walked in.
She still had that same smiling face, her eyes crinkling into slits.
She glanced at the monster nailed to the spot, then at Luo Yao who was holding Bai Ziheng.
"It's really not easy to see you."
Qin Shuo opened his eyes slightly, his light gray pupils gleaming faintly in the dim space.
"So many years have passed, Venerable One, your era has long since ended, why awaken again?"
Luo Yao gently placed Bai Ziheng on the ground and turned to face Qin Shuo.
Those golden vertical pupils shone brightly in the dim space, and a smile still lingered on his lips, but there was no warmth in that smile.
"That little bastard who betrayed me once before, now he's standing right in front of me..."
She took a step forward.
The water film beneath his feet rippled outwards, and the ripples broke into fine mist upon hitting Qin Shuo's feet.
"Do you think you can easily defeat me?"
Qin Shuo immediately smiled and waved his hand, making a large gesture, like an honest man who had been wronged.
"That's not true, Your Excellency. How could I dare to say such a thing?"
She spread her hands out, adopting a very humble posture.
But those light gray eyes remained squinted, making it impossible to see what was hidden within them.
"And I did not betray you."
"I just saw the importance of humanity in the future of this world. Although they have short lifespans and weak strength, they are creative, resilient, and have the ability to bloom even in dire straits."
"During the thousand years you have been asleep, mankind has created iron birds that can fly to the moon, boxes that can talk across the ocean, and many other things that you never dared to imagine."
"They accomplished in a mere thousand years what other species couldn't do in a hundred thousand years."
Qin Shuo opened his eyes a little, his light gray pupils reflecting Luo Yao's golden vertical pupils.
"And your existence is an obstacle for everyone."
"You are too powerful, so powerful that you can cover up the sky. As long as you are still here, and you wield so much power, you are the biggest obstacle to the progress of this world."
"A single fragment of those powers would be enough to feed an organization for tens of thousands of years, yet you alone possess them all."
"Tell me, which chess player in the world wouldn't want to remove the largest piece from the chessboard?"
Luo Yao smiled at her and tilted her head.
"Why did you go to such lengths to lure me out?"
Qin Shuo stopped smiling, clasped his hands in front of him, and bowed slightly.
"Your Excellency, if I told you that a game revolving around your power is about to begin, would you be interested in participating?"
"Those organizations with power are no longer satisfied with the status quo. They have been lying in the shadows for too long and are now eager to make a move and reshuffle the deck."
Luo Yao raised an eyebrow.
"Those powers were originally mine, and it's only natural for me to take them back; there's no need for any games."
Millions of years ago, they belonged to you. But the moment you lent them out, were they truly still yours?
Qin Shuo's tone carried a hint of persuasion.
Zheng Xingguang frowned and couldn't help but speak.
"Minister Qin, what are you talking about? What power game? What reshuffling? Isn't this the entrustment you mentioned before? How did it turn into—"
"Xiao Guang, you have no right to speak here. Be quiet."
Qin Shuo didn't turn his head; his voice remained gentle, as if he were coaxing an ignorant child.
But when Zheng Xingguang opened his mouth, he found that he couldn't make a sound.
Qin Shuo turned his gaze back to Luo Yao and nodded slightly.
To put it bluntly, this commission is actually just an invitation.
"And your relative does indeed have his own exceptional qualities."
"To be honest, I've never seen anyone else fuse the power of domination so perfectly."
Her gaze lingered on Bai Ziheng for a moment.
Bai Ziheng remained kneeling on one knee, his right hand covering his chest, large beads of sweat dripping from his forehead.
But those golden pupils had refocused from their dazed state and were now staring coldly at her.
"He is indeed qualified to participate in this game."
Qin Shuo turned his gaze away.
"Venerable Sir, I have not come here today to settle old scores with you."
"I hope to work with you."
"Every participant in this game holds a portion of your power."
"They are no longer content with just 'borrowing'; they want to truly own it, and to truly own it, they must first defeat all competitors."
"In the end, the winner takes all. Rather than letting them join forces to deal with you first, we should join forces and defeat them one by one."
"Whether you or I possess the power to reclaim it is a matter between the two of us. At least for now, we can join forces against external threats."
After hearing these words, Luo Yao remained silent for a moment.
Then she shook her head.
"Excuse me."
She turned around, walked back to Bai Ziheng's side, and squatted down beside him.
She gently wiped away the still-damp sweat from his forehead, her movements very light.
"I will not cooperate with a stray dog who betrayed me."
Qin Shuo's smile froze for a moment.
"As for that game you mentioned—"
Luo Yao didn't even turn her head. She wiped away the trace of blood left at the corner of Bai Ziheng's mouth with her thumb, then looked down at the dark red stain on her fingertip.
Stick out your tongue and gently lick it off.
"I won't participate either."
She removed the finger from her lips, then turned her head slightly and glanced at Qin Shuo out of the corner of her eye.
There was no anger in those golden vertical pupils, only an innate arrogance.
"It's like humans wouldn't participate in a carnival made up of wild dogs."
Qin Shuo opened his eyes a little.
"but--"
Luo Yao withdrew her gaze and gently patted Bai Ziheng's cheek.
Then she tilted her head and leaned closer to his face, a mischievous smile slowly curving her lips—a smile he knew all too well.
"My little knight might be very interested."
"You guys want to play, right? Okay. I don't want this game to get too boring."
"I'm too lazy to do it myself, so I'll just let him keep you company."
She lifted Bai Ziheng's chin and gently stroked it with her thumb.
Bai Ziheng looked at her face so close to his own, at his own disheveled reflection in her pupils, and his Adam's apple bobbed.
He didn't speak, he just nodded.
Qin Shuo stood still, watching this scene unfold.
The smile on her face had vanished at some point, replaced by an extremely complex expression.
"In two thousand years, this is the first time I've seen you care so much about someone. Oh well, oh well."
She bowed slightly to Luo Yao.
"Then I'll wait and see."
