At lunchtime, as usual, Lin Bei took out his insulated bag and walked to Su Wantang's seat.

The two finished their meal in silence. Su Wantang put down her chopsticks, looked up at him.

"Lin Bei".

"Um."

"I'm not having any English tutoring today at noon."

Lin Bei's heart skipped a beat. Oh no, was the braised pork too greasy? Or was the collision yesterday too severe, and she wanted to distance herself from him?

[The host's inner monologue has surpassed that of Zhou Ziheng's novels. Su Wantang only said she wouldn't take English lessons, not that she wouldn't play with you anymore.]

"I want to talk to my dad," Su Wantang said. "Let's go now."

Lin Bei glanced at the time: 12:20. It takes forty minutes by bus from the school to Cuipingyuan, a round trip of more than an hour.

"Could I ask for leave this afternoon?"

Su Wantang shook her head: "I won't ask for leave. I'll go now, talk to him, and then come back to class."

Lin Bei didn't try to persuade her further and silently started the life countdown. A string of numbers appeared above Su Wantang's head: 4 days, 11 hours, and 15 minutes. It was more than half a day less than yesterday, but still within the normal range.

"I'll go with you."

"No need." Su Wantang stood up, put her phone in her pocket, and said, "This is my family's business; I'll handle it myself."

Lin Bei didn't insist, but simply asked, "Where does your dad live?"

Room 302, Building 8, Cuipingyuan Community, Chengdong.

Do you know how to get there?

Su Wantang was stunned for a moment.

"How did you go last time?"

"My dad came to pick me up."

"How are you going to get there if you don't even know the way?"

Su Wantang fell silent.

"Let's go," Lin Bei said. "I'm afraid you'll get lost."

Su Wantang looked at him, her lips moved, and finally she nodded gently.

They went out through the back gate of the school, boarded the bus, and sat in the last row.

The view outside the window changed from plane trees to a commercial street, then from the commercial street to a residential area, and finally to the newly developed housing complex in the east of the city. The exterior walls of Cuipingyuan were painted beige, and the balconies were uniformly fitted with dark blue glass, which shone brightly in the midday sun.

The bus stopped at Cuipingyuan Station, and Lin Bei and Su Wantang got off.

The gate of the residential area is very grand, with two stone lions at the entrance and a large wrought iron gate in the middle. There are security guards sitting in the guardhouse, wearing dark blue uniforms.

"Where is Building 8?" Lin Bei asked.

Su Wantang shook her head.

Lin Bei walked to the guardhouse and knocked on the window: "Hello, could you tell me how to get to Building 8?"

The security guard pointed inside the residential area: "Go straight, turn left at the second intersection, and you'll see that red building."

Lin Bei thanked her and walked inside with Su Wantang.

The fragrance of osmanthus blossoms in the residential area was cloyingly strong, and the red paving stones were scorching hot from the sun. Building No. 8 was a high-rise building with red paint on its exterior walls and an electronic access control system at the entrance.

Lin Bei pressed the button for room 302, and a woman's muffled voice came through the intercom: "Who is it?"

"Auntie, I'm Su Wantang's classmate. I'm here to see Uncle Su," Lin Bei said.

There was a two-second silence on the walkie-talkie, then the door lock clicked open.

The elevator was covered with protective wooden boards and plastered with construction stickers. Lin Bei pressed the button for the 3rd floor, and the elevator slowly ascended.

"Are you nervous?" Lin Bei asked.

Su Wantang shook her head, but her hands were trembling slightly.

The elevator doors opened.

The door to room 302 was ajar, and a woman stood in the doorway. Zhao Yumei.

She was wearing a light pink loungewear set today, her hair casually tied back, and she wasn't wearing makeup, but her skin was still very fair. When she saw Su Wantang, the corner of her mouth twitched slightly, but the curve wasn't quite a smile; it was more like a knowing "I knew she'd come" expression.

"Wantang is here? Come in." She turned and walked into the house, her slippers making a clattering sound on the floor.

Lin Bei and Su Wantang followed them inside.

The living room was a size larger than the one in room 502. The floor was light-colored composite flooring, and the walls were covered with off-white wallpaper. The sofa was new, and a tea set sat on the coffee table. Several pieces of clothing were hanging on the balcony: a man's shirt, a woman's skirt, and a dark blue tie.

Su Yuan sat on the sofa, a cup of tea in his hand. The TV was on, showing the midday news. He saw Su Wantang come in, put down his teacup, his expression unreadable—neither happy nor unhappy. He moved his lips a couple of times, finally saying, "You're here? Have you eaten?"

"I've already eaten." Su Wantang stood in the middle of the living room without sitting down.

Su Yuan glanced at Lin Bei, his brows furrowing slightly: "And who is this?"

"Lin Bei, you live across the hall," Lin Bei said. "Uncle Su, we've met before. Last time in the hallway, I helped you carry your things."

Su Yuan remembered, and the expression on his face relaxed a little, but he still had a wary look on his face, as if asking, "What are you doing here?"

"Have a seat," Su Yuan said, pointing to the sofa next to him.

Lin Bei and Su Wantang sat down. Zhao Yumei brought out two glasses of water from the kitchen, placed them on the coffee table, and then sat down next to Su Yuan, habitually taking his arm with one hand.

"Wantang, your dad said you're moving in this weekend. Have you packed everything?" Zhao Yumei's voice was gentle, almost deliberately so, like the lines of a stepmother character on TV.

Su Wantang didn't look at her; her gaze remained fixed on Su Yuan.

"Dad, I came today to talk to you about the house."

Su Yuan frowned even more deeply: "The house? What about the house?"

"That apartment, 502." Su Wantang's voice wasn't loud, but every word was clear. "It's in my mother's name. Whether it's sold or not isn't up to you alone."

Zhao Yumei tightened her grip on Su Yuan's arm.

Su Yuan's expression changed, from "warning" to "ugly". He glanced at Zhao Yumei, then at Su Wantang, his lips trembling slightly.

"What nonsense are you talking about?" His voice rose. "That's your mother's house, but I'm your father, and I have the right to do what I want!"

"Legally, I have a share in this house," Su Wantang said without backing down. "After my mother passed away, I also have inheritance rights to this house. You can't decide to sell it all by yourself."

Su Yuan's face flushed red. He stood up abruptly, his teacup wobbling on the coffee table, spilling tea and leaving a small brown stain on the light-colored surface.

"Where...where did you learn all this?" Su Yuan's voice carried an offended anger. "Did you hear something from someone? Was it him?"

He suddenly pointed at Lin Bei.

Lin Bei sat on the sofa, motionless.

"Uncle Su, I just came with her," Lin Bei said. "She found these things herself; it has nothing to do with me."

"Bullshit!" Su Yuan cursed. "She's only sixteen. What does she know about inheritance rights? What is the law? Didn't you teach her? How could she say such things?"

"Dad," Su Wantang stood up, blocking Lin Bei's way, "It's none of his business. I looked it up online myself. I have the right to know about my mother's house."

Su Yuan looked at his daughter, his chest heaving violently.

Zhao Yumei stood up from the sofa and tugged at Su Yuan's arm: "Old Su, don't get agitated. Let's talk this out. Wan Tang is still young and doesn't understand things. Just reason with her, why are you getting angry?"

These words sounded like they were trying to mediate a fight, but Lin Bei could tell that every word was adding fuel to the fire.
