Reborn as a high school freshman with an awakened system, a fat boy transforms into a male god.
Chapter 231: The cup was washed one more time.
The old man sat in the main seat and occasionally put a piece of food on her plate. She said "that's enough" twice, but the third time she didn't refuse and ate the piece of fish.
After finishing his meal, Lin Bei didn't rush off as usual. He sat in the living room for a while longer, waiting for the sounds of dishes being cleared from the kitchen to gradually subside before standing up.
Shen Qingzhi had already stood up from the dining table and was about to walk towards the stairs. As she passed the coffee table, she paused and glanced at Lin Bei.
Her gaze lingered on his face for a moment, then she looked away and continued walking upstairs.
The old man was sitting on the sofa making tea. He rinsed the cups, poured them out, and refilled them with hot water. His movements were as steady as ever, but Lin Bei noticed that he rinsed the cups twice while making the tea. He usually only did that step once, but today he did it twice.
Lin Bei watched him finish rinsing the cup a second time before speaking, "Grandpa Shen, I'll head back now."
"Okay." The old man put down the teapot. "See you next Saturday."
As Lin Bei changed his shoes and pushed open the villa door, a cold wind rushed in from outside.
He walked down the stone path, stopped at the corner, and glanced back at the second floor of Villa No. 8.
That was the direction of Shen Qingzhi's room. The curtains were drawn, so you couldn't see inside. A breeze blew in from the side, lifting the hem of his coat slightly before letting it fall back down.
He didn't stand there for long before turning around and continuing down the path.
The bus swayed and rattled through the afternoon streets. He sat by the window, watching the street scene rushing past, but the words he had just spoken were still swirling in his mind.
Shen Qingzhi sat on the sofa for more than ten minutes without saying a word or even touching her water glass.
Usually, when she sits next to me, even if she doesn't say anything, she'll be flipping through a book or looking at her phone; she always has something in her hand. Today, she didn't do anything; she just sat there quietly.
He was wondering what was bothering her.
But he had no answer to that question. He didn't even ask, just as the old man had said, "She'll tell when she's ready." All he could do now was remember it and wait.
The bus stopped at the entrance of the residential area. He got off the bus, walked through the gate, and went upstairs.
When he passed by 502, the door was closed, and he could hear the sound of a television inside, not very loud. He didn't knock, but turned around and pushed open the door to 501.
……
Around 2 PM, there was a knock on the door. Zhang Mingyuan stood in the doorway, wearing a gray long-sleeved sports shirt and carrying a black backpack.
"Brother Bei!" He grinned, "Study first or work on your abs first?"
"Learn first, then practice."
Zhang Mingyuan changed his shoes and went into the bedroom. He put his schoolbag down beside his feet, took out his workbook and test papers, and sat down on the other side of the desk.
The two of them were engrossed in their work, the soft scratching of their pens on the paper filling the quiet room.
The sunlight outside the window slowly moved from the center of the desk to the corner.
When he got to the third physics test, Zhang Mingyuan put down his pen, leaned back in his chair, and didn't immediately turn to the next one. He turned his head and glanced at Lin Bei: "Brother Bei, I have something to tell you."
Lin Bei looked up from the math problem.
"Chen Yutong's mother went to see Su Yuan yesterday."
Lin Bei paused, pen in hand. "Go find Su Yuan?"
"Yes. She said that Su Yuan invested money at the last recruitment presentation, and later she heard that the organization was shut down, so she wanted to talk to him. The two of them sat down and talked for an afternoon, exchanging information and feeling much more at ease."
Zhang Mingyuan paused for a moment, then said, "Chen Yutong said that after her mother came back, she put on that new down jacket and stood in front of the mirror for a while. She seemed to be in a good mood."
He turned back to look at Lin Bei: "Brother Bei, do you think they're in the same boat?"
Lin Bei thought for a moment and said, "I guess so."
Zhang Mingyuan nodded, picked up his pen again, and opened the paper.
After studying for another hour, Lin Bei closed his workbook, stood up, and stretched his shoulders: "Let's work on our abs first."
"Okay." Zhang Mingyuan closed his test paper, stood up, and stretched. "Let's practice something different today."
"Different?" Lin Bei flexed his wrists. "Last time you said 'different,' and the next day I almost had to hold onto the wall to squat down in the bathroom."
Zhang Mingyuan grinned: "That's because your core hasn't adapted yet. Today's guarantee isn't that powerful."
"You said the same thing last time."
"Last time was last time, and this time is this time. A mature coach should dynamically adjust the training plan according to the trainee's condition. Last night I even searched on Baidu for 'how to scientifically guide a friend to train abs'."
Lin Bei didn't reply, but his lips twitched slightly as he bent down and spread out the yoga mat.
Zhang Mingyuan stood to the side, hands on his hips, looking like he was about to start teaching seriously.
He looked down at Lin Bei as he flattened the four corners of the mat, then squatted down and tapped the mat with his index finger: "Today we'll practice a new move called 'mountain climber run'."
"It sounds like we're going hiking."
"It's not mountain climbing, it's imitating mountain climbing," Zhang Mingyuan said, supporting himself with his hands on the ground, his body in a straight line, and then quickly raising his knees forward alternately, as if he were running, but with his hands supporting him on the ground.
After Zhang Mingyuan demonstrated the mountain running, Lin Bei followed along. After three sets, his abdomen was burning.
"Take a break, then start the ab ripper workout," Zhang Mingyuan said.
A while later, Lin Bei lay back down and started doing crunches. Twenty reps per set, two sets in total, his abs started to ache. Next came V-ups, fifteen reps per set, three sets in total. By the second set, he was gritting his teeth, pausing for half a second after each curl before putting the rep back down.
Leg raises were the most grueling. After three sets, he rolled over and lay face down on the mat, catching his breath before rolling back over. He did two sets of side planks, each for thirty seconds, and his obliques felt like they'd been sanded from the inside out. Finally, he did scissor kicks. He didn't care about proper form anymore; if he couldn't lift his leg high enough, he'd lower it a little, but he wouldn't let his foot touch the ground.
After finishing the last one, he collapsed onto the mat with his arms outstretched.
"Not bad." Zhang Mingyuan lay down next to him.
Lin Bei was panting, too weak to reply. But he also felt it himself; after the last time, his mind was blank, as if his whole being had been emptied out.
The two lay down for a while. Zhang Mingyuan sat up first and reached out to help Lin Bei.
Lin Bei stood up and began to stretch. His abdomen was burning hot from the surface to the depths; the sweat had dried, but the burning sensation was still emanating from it.
By the time Zhang Mingyuan returned, it was already completely dark.
Lin Bei stood at the door and watched the motion-activated light at the corner of the stairs go out before closing the door.
He walked back to the living room, where Wang Xiulan was carrying a plate of food out of the kitchen. Seeing him standing in the middle of the living room, she asked, "Zhang Mingyuan is gone?"
"Um."
"Then go wash your hands and get ready to eat."
Lin Bei went to the bathroom to wash his hands. When he came out, all the food had been laid out.
We ate quietly tonight; the TV was on, but the volume was very low.
His mother would occasionally put a piece of ribbonfish into his bowl, while his father sat opposite him drinking soup. After finishing his soup, he ladled out another bowl and, as he put down his spoon, said, "Su Yuan went to the shop all day today. Old Chen said he's learning quite quickly. He said he used to work on construction sites, and memorizing floor plans is easier for him than memorizing blueprints. Old Chen said he's a reliable person and will stay."
