Reborn as a high school freshman with an awakened system, a fat boy transforms into a male god.
Chapter 2 reached the point where everything was still in time.
Although they lived across the hall from each other in their previous life, they hardly interacted. This was mainly because he was a socially awkward, overweight otaku back then, blushing whenever he talked to girls and wanting to shut himself away in his own world.
Every time he ran into Su Wantang in the hallway, he would lower his head and walk past her quickly, not daring to even glance at her.
All he knew was that she was very beautiful. Although he only dared to glance at her out of the corner of his eye each time, that fleeting glimpse left a deep impression. So deep that, many years later, he could no longer remember high school function formulas, English words, or historical dates, but he still remembered that profile.
Also, she and he were in the same class.
On the first night of school, the news spread throughout the entire neighborhood. The girl in apartment 502 had committed suicide; she had cut her wrists, and blood was everywhere. By the time she was discovered, it was too late; the ambulance came and went without sirens blaring.
Later, Lin Bei heard various versions of rumors. Some said it was because of family issues, some said it was because she was bullied at school, and others said she had depression. But no one could say for sure what the real reason was.
People talked about it for a few days, then stopped mentioning it, and life went on as if nothing had happened.
But it's different now.
Now that he has been reborn and knows that this will happen, he has to do something, even if it's just to say a word to her.
Lin Bei took a deep breath, suppressed the matter in his heart, and turned to go downstairs.
His Phoenix brand bicycle, a 28-inch model, was parked in the hallway. Several patches of paint had peeled off the frame, and the seat was covered with a velvet cover, which his mother had sewn to prevent him from getting his bottom burned while riding.
This bicycle is an old relic left by his maternal grandfather. When you ride it, everything makes noise except for the bell. The chain creaks and groans, the brakes squeak and squeal, and the handlebars are slightly tilted to the right, so you have to lean to the side to ride in a straight line.
Lin Bei tucked his schoolbag into the back seat of the car, straddled it, and started riding off on the pedals.
The mornings in early September were already a bit chilly. The leaves of the plane trees along the street were still green, but the edges had begun to turn yellow.
Lin Bei rode his old-fashioned bicycle through two streets and turned into a narrow alley lined with sycamore trees.
Sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting dappled shadows on the ground. His wheels rolled over them, shattering the shadows before they coalesced again behind him. Like his life… broken, then pieced back together.
He really came back.
I'm back in 2012, back when I was sixteen, back when everything was still possible.
The school wasn't far from his home, about a fifteen-minute bike ride. The gate of Jiangcheng No. 1 Middle School was already bustling with activity, crowded with parents dropping off their children and new students carrying their backpacks.
Lin Bei locked his bicycle, slung his schoolbag over his shoulder, and walked into the school gate.
A large red notice board was posted at the school gate, listing the students' class assignments.
He squeezed into the crowd to find his name. Though it was described as "squeezing," the crowd automatically parted to make way for him, not out of respect, but because his size meant there was no room for others. Making way was a survival instinct.
His eyes swept across the list.
Grade 3 (1) Class.
His gaze moved down one line.
Su Wantang.
They were in the same class.
The classroom is on the third floor at the east end.
Lin Bei climbed the stairs, panting for breath with each floor he went up. By the time he reached the third floor, he was covered in sweat.
There were already quite a few students in the corridor, chatting in twos and threes. Some were talking loudly about their middle school entrance exam scores, some were exchanging information about where they had traveled during the summer vacation, and some boys were secretly sizing up female classmates. Their gazes followed a classic pattern: first, they would steal a glance at her face, then quickly scan her body, and finally, they would look guiltily at the ceiling or into the distance.
When Lin Bei entered the classroom of Class 3, Grade 1, most of the students were already sitting inside.
He stood at the doorway and quickly glanced around the classroom. The last row by the window was still empty; that was his chosen spot.
Based on his years of experience, sitting in the last row by the window is the perfect spot in the whole class.
He was about to walk that way when he suddenly caught a glimpse of someone out of the corner of his eye.
A girl sat in the middle of the classroom, near the front. She had her hair tied in a low ponytail, wore a white dress that reached just to her knees, and white canvas shoes. A small section of her calves peeked out between the white dress and shoes, her skin practically glowing white.
Yes, she wasn't wearing her school uniform because it was the first day of school, and the uniforms hadn't been distributed yet. Once they were, everyone would be wearing the same blue and white tracksuits, and then everyone's looks would undergo a brutal "uniform test." Some people look like school beauties in uniform, some look like ordinary people, and some look... well, never mind, it's all too painful to talk about.
She sat there quietly, looking down at a book. Sunlight streamed in through the window, falling on her profile and making her look as if she were bathed in gold.
Lin Bei stood there, stunned.
It wasn't because the girl was particularly stunning. Okay, she was indeed quite beautiful. But what truly stunned Lin Bei was that she was Su Wantang. His neighbor in apartment 502 across the street, a girl who was going to commit suicide that night.
Su Wantang seemed to sense his gaze, and looked up, their eyes meeting. In that instant, Lin Bei felt his heart pounding as if someone had slammed on the gas pedal, sending it soaring from 60 mph to 160 mph.
She was taken aback at first, then her eyes widened slightly, clearly recognizing him. After all, it was hard not to remember such a round, enormous neighbor who lived across the hall. His size alone made the entire corridor seem a third darker.
She gave a polite smile, nodded slightly, and then lowered her head back to read.
Lin Bei's heart was still pounding. He quickly scolded himself in his mind: "Lin Bei, get your act together! You're here to save people, not to date. You're a fat guy with a mission, not a fat guy in heat. Calm down."
He walked to the last row by the window, plopped down, and the chair made that teeth-grinding "creak" sound.
Just then, another person walked into the classroom.
Lin Bei hadn't paid any attention at first, but the classroom suddenly fell silent for a fraction of a second. Everyone stopped talking and turned their eyes to the door.
He curiously raised his head and glanced towards the doorway.
Then he was stunned.
A girl stood at the door, incredibly beautiful. Her hair was long and flowing, jet black, and her skin was so fair it seemed to glow. She wore a simple white T-shirt and jeans, but even in this simplest of outfits, she was captivating.
Some people wear a white T-shirt and just "wear a white T-shirt," while others wear a white T-shirt and "make it look like haute couture." She is the latter.
Lin Bei was engrossed in watching... well, the whole class was engrossed in watching too. The girl seemed to sense his gaze, turned her head, and looked directly at him.
It wasn't because she had a sixth sense, nor because she knew him; it was simply because his physique was so striking. Among a group of thin people sitting upright, it was impossible not to notice that enormous figure in the last row.
Lin Bei quickly shifted his gaze to the window. His movement was so swift it was practically a conditioned reflex for someone with social anxiety.
There was only a sycamore tree and half a playground outside the window, but he looked at it with extreme concentration.
A bespectacled guy at the table in front of me leaned over and whispered, "Dude, isn't that girl super pretty?"
Lin Bei paused for a moment, then turned to look at the person who had spoken.
"My name is Zhou Ziheng." The bespectacled boy pushed up his glasses, revealing a set of bright white teeth. "We'll be sitting next to each other from now on, so please take care of me! Come on, let's add each other on QQ."
Lin Bei looked at him. He was wearing black-rimmed glasses, thin and small, and looked to be less than 100 pounds. He looked like the kind of person who could be blown over by the wind.
This person later became his lifelong best friend.
Perhaps fat people and thin people are a match made in heaven, one is responsible for blocking the wind, and the other is responsible for being blown away by the wind.
