When Wenqing woke up, the first thing she felt was a cool sensation around her wrist.
She moved her arm in a daze, and a clanging sound of metal clashing rang out in the quiet room, crisp and jarring.
Then she suddenly opened her eyes and saw a large bed with dark solid wood bedposts carved with intricate patterns.
Looking down, Wen Qing was shocked to find that there were chains on her wrists and ankles, with the other end of the chains connected to the bedposts.
She froze instantly, then memories from before she lost consciousness flooded back like a tidal wave—the underground casino…Lin Zhiyan…and that bottle of liquid with its cloying, pungent scent…
She immediately realized that Lin Zhiyan was behind all of this.
Realizing this, Wen Qing quickly looked down and checked her clothes. She was still wearing the same dark hoodie and trousers as before. Although they were a bit wrinkled, she was wearing them intact and there was no sign that they had been changed.
She breathed a slight sigh of relief, but then tensed up again.
With the chains on, she couldn't even get off the bed.
The Popeye trial card from before had expired, and that power had completely disappeared from her body, so she was no longer able to budge the chains.
However, when she tried to ask the system if she could redeem it again, the system replied that the item was on cooldown and could not be purchased again for the time being.
Having no other option, she tested the strength of the chains again, but it was pointless except for making a series of rattling sounds, so she had to give up for the time being.
She then began to look around the room.
The room was luxurious, with an exquisite crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling, dark wallpaper on the walls, and a thick, soft carpet. A few steps away was a floor-to-ceiling window completely covered by curtains, through which sunlight filtered in and spilled onto the wooden floor.
She was clearly no longer in that underground casino, but had been moved to another place, and judging from the light, it was daytime now.
That means she was unconscious for a whole night, or even longer.
The thought that her brother must be frantic with worry after she had been missing for so long made her heart burn like it was on fire.
The room was very quiet.
The heavy curtains blocked out most of the light, creating a dark and oppressive atmosphere in the space.
The darkness and deathly silence intensified her anxiety and unease.
Just then, the door suddenly opened.
Wen Qing was startled, and her whole body tensed up reflexively.
She turned her head to look at the doorway and saw a tall figure standing there against the light.
It is Lin Zhiyan.
No, it should be called Lin Zhiyan's alternate personality.
He wasn't wearing glasses, and he was wearing a black shirt with the top two buttons undone, revealing his well-defined collarbone.
He was leaning against the door frame with a casual smile on his lips. He wasn't surprised to see that she was awake. He raised his hand and waved to her, his tone naturally familiar.
"Awake? How did you sleep? My bed was pretty comfortable, wasn't it?"
Wenqing felt angry when she saw him like this.
"Lin Zhiyan!" She yanked the chains, making them rattle, and glared at him. "Are you crazy? Why are you locking me up here?! Don't you know this is illegal detention?!"
Lin Zhiyan did not answer her immediately, but instead took a step and slowly walked towards the bedside, his leather shoes making almost no sound on the thick carpet.
He walked to the bedside and stood there, looking down at her. Her back was to the light from the doorway, and her entire face was in shadow, except for her eyes, which shone brightly.
His gaze, like that of a wolf scrutinizing its prey, made the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end instantly.
Wenqing's throat moved involuntarily, and her fingers gripping the bed sheet tightened even more.
Lin Zhiyan noticed this subtle change in her expression, raised an eyebrow, and asked with a hint of amusement, "Are you afraid of me?"
"I didn't," Wen Qing said, forcing herself to speak.
"Your pupils just contracted, and your breathing quickened."
He leaned down, bracing himself on the edge of the bed, bringing his face closer to hers, his eyes fixed on her face. "Still saying no?"
Wenqing bit her lower lip, her heart pounding in her chest.
She was genuinely afraid. This alternate personality was so different from the gentle and polite Lin Zhiyan she knew. His personality was completely unpredictable, and she couldn't foresee what he would do next.
But she didn't want to admit defeat in front of him, so she turned her head away to avoid his gaze and repeated herself stiffly.
"No, what exactly do you want?"
"What do I want to do?"
Lin Zhiyan chuckled, straightened up, and slowly walked around to the other side of the bed to sit down, the mattress sinking under his weight.
He turned his head to look at her, his gaze as if he were examining a collectible that piqued his curiosity.
"I'm just a little curious about you... I always feel like you have many secrets..."
As he spoke, he extended a finger and gently slid it across the top of her wrist.
The cold touch of his fingers sent a chill down her spine.
Wenqing tried to pull her hand back, but the length of the chain restricted her movements, and she could only watch helplessly as his fingers roamed over her skin.
"What secrets could I possibly have?"
Wenqing replied dryly, trying to make her voice sound calm.
"a lot of."
"Lin Zhiyan" leaned closer, with his other hand supporting himself on the bed beside her, his whole body slowly closing in like a net.
He looked down at her, a few strands of black hair falling across his forehead, his deep eyes shining brightly in the dim light, his pupils reflecting her slightly pale face.
"For example, where did you get that knife? Or how did you suddenly become so strong in the casino? Or..."
He paused, then brought his nose closer to her ear, as if searching for some lingering scent.
"The smell you had before..."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
Wen Qing turned her head away to avoid his breath, but the tips of her ears turned red uncontrollably.
"It's okay if you don't know..."
He chuckled softly, the sound like a feather brushing against her ear.
"You'll have plenty of time to think about it later. For every one thing you remember, I'll loosen my grip on one hand. How about that? Is that a fair deal?"
He spoke almost right next to her ear, his voice low and soft, as if he were telling her a secret that belonged only between the two of them.
Wenqing's nails dug into her palms, desperately trying to keep herself from being led astray by his rhythm.
She couldn't follow his train of thought.
This alternate personality is too dangerous; it can seize all your initiative the moment you lose focus.
"Fair?" Wen Qing looked at him with a tense expression, and sneered, "Do you have some kind of misunderstanding about the word 'fairness'?"
"Oh?" Lin Zhiyan leaned back slightly, as if she had heard something interesting, and the corners of her mouth turned up a little more.
He wasn't angry. Instead, he reached out and gently and slowly brushed her chin with the back of his fingers, as if he were stroking the fur of a cat with its fur standing on end.
"Then tell me, what constitutes fairness?"
His movements were very gentle, but Wenqing felt as if the skin he touched was being branded with a hot iron, burning intensely.
She tried to dodge, but her range of movement was limited, and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't escape his fingers.
He clearly understood this, so he wasn't in a hurry to force her. He just teased her slowly, like a cat using its paw to paw at a small bird that was already under its palm.
"Let me go first," Wenqing said, trying to look him in the eye.
"Let you go?"
Lin Zhiyan felt as if she had heard a request that was both laughable and absurd.
He suddenly grabbed her chained wrist, gently pressed her hand onto the pillow, and leaned closer.
His handsome, deep-set face was so close to hers that she could smell the rather unpleasant scent emanating from him.
His gaze slowly moved down from her eyes to her lips, then back to her eyes, his eyes darkening.
"What if you run away after I let you go? After all, I don't know the secrets hidden inside your body..."
Lin Zhiyan said.
