Transmigrated into the cannon fodder younger sister of the uke in a BL novel
Chapter 46 The Banquet
Wenqing was startled.
She didn't know when her brother had silently walked up behind them, like a cat approaching without a sound. By the time she realized it, his eyes had been watching her for who knows how long.
She turned around and met Wen Fan's gaze.
That gaze was not as gentle and soft as usual; it was dark and deep, with some emotion she had never seen before surging in the depths of its pupils, like a sky weighed down by dark clouds. Even though there was no thunder or lightning yet, the air was already so stuffy that it was hard to breathe.
Her heart skipped a beat, and the explanation that was on the tip of her tongue suddenly got stuck in her throat.
She had never seen her brother look like this before.
Fu Anhe suddenly chuckled at this moment, casually wiping away the remaining water droplets on his face with his fingers, his posture relaxed yet elegant.
He explained on Wenqing's behalf.
"Mr. Wen, perhaps I didn't ask your sister's opinion beforehand, which caused her to misunderstand me."
Wen Fan's cool gaze shifted from Wen Qing to him, slowly turning to him: "What misunderstanding?"
Fu Anhe met his gaze calmly, his tone carrying just the right amount of apology.
"Miss Wen almost fell in the corridor just now, and I helped her up. At that time, I encountered a little personal trouble and wanted to ask Miss Wen for a small favor. However, because I was too abrupt and did not ask for her consent beforehand, Miss Wen was a little unhappy with me. This was indeed my fault, and I apologize to you here."
He spoke with a slightly humble posture, yet his words were perfectly tactful.
There was no lying, nor was there a complete revelation; every word was true, but when put together, it just happened to avoid the most sensitive part.
Wen Fan didn't respond to him, but instead looked at Wen Qing again: "Is that so, Qingqing?"
His tone was even gentle, but the warmth combined with his dark eyes created an extremely strong intuition for some reason.
If she tells the truth now and tells the whole story, I feel like something uncontrollable is bound to happen next.
So she nodded subconsciously.
As Wen Fan watched her nod, his fingers, hanging by his side, slowly curled up, and faint blue veins appeared on the back of his hand.
The darkness in his eyes did not dissipate; instead, it intensified, like ink dripping into water, spreading silently.
But after a moment, he loosened his clenched fists, and a somewhat forced smile reappeared on his face.
"It seems I misunderstood."
Fu Anhe glanced at Wen Fan, then smiled enigmatically.
……
After parting ways with Fu Anhe, the two walked in the mall corridor.
Wen Qing walked to his left, secretly glancing at Wen Fan's profile out of the corner of her eye.
His expression had returned to normal; his brow was relaxed, and a gentle smile had returned to the corners of his mouth.
But she always felt something was wrong, like the sea after a storm, calm on the surface but with undercurrents beneath.
However, just as Wen Qing was feeling uneasy, Wen Fan suddenly spoke. He didn't look at her; his gaze was fixed straight ahead.
"Qingqing, did he really not offend you just now?"
"And what happened before? What did he ask you for help with?"
As she watched the dark shadows slowly creep up his profile, a sudden alarm bell rang in Wen Qing's heart.
She has the keen intuition of a small animal, and is exceptionally sensitive to any hint of danger.
But at this moment, this sensitivity was directed at her brother, with whom she had spent more than ten years.
Wen Fan seemed to sense something and turned his head to look at her.
In just one glance, he saw a fleeting look of fear in her eyes.
That fear seemed to be... a fear of him personally...
Wen Fan was suddenly stunned, and the cold, deep shadow in his eyes vanished in an instant, like mist pierced by sunlight.
He was silent for a moment, then a familiar tenderness and heartache appeared in his eyes.
He stopped, sighed softly, and his tone returned to its usual gentleness.
"Qingqing, if you don't want to talk about it, that's fine. Your brother is only asking because he's worried about you..."
Looking at his face, which had returned to normal, Wenqing finally felt a tension ease in her heart.
She told herself that it must have been her imagination—her brother was just too worried about her.
From childhood to adulthood, his biggest concern has always been her safety.
It's not surprising that he reacted that way because he was worried that a strange man might do something inappropriate to her in public.
She thought about it and decided to tell the truth, but subconsciously omitted the detail of Fu Anhe putting his arm around her shoulder. She only said that Dr. Fu helped her up and then wanted her to help deal with a female friend who was harassing him. She felt used and was therefore unhappy.
Wen Fan's face darkened after hearing the whole story, and a clear anger flashed in his eyes.
"I never expected that Dr. Fu to be such a frivolous and unprincipled person. I really regret entrusting your condition to him. He is not qualified to be your attending physician."
Seeing that he was so angry, Wenqing quickly tugged at his sleeve to comfort him.
"Brother, it's really not a big deal. I just helped him fend off some unwanted attention. Besides, he got splashed with water, so he learned his lesson. Don't be angry."
Wen Fan took a deep breath, and his anger slowly subsided.
He lowered his head, his gaze unintentionally falling on her shoulder.
The gray-blue dress was sleeveless, and a small section of her slender shoulder was exposed, her skin dazzlingly white under the mall lights.
Wen Fan's gaze lingered there, as if he had thought of something, and his pupils contracted slightly.
He then took a tissue from his pocket, placed it on her bare shoulder, and began to slowly and carefully wipe it.
"I think you're a little dirty here," he said softly, as if talking to himself, "Let me wipe it for you."
Wen Qing looked down at her shoulder, then looked up at his focused profile, a hint of doubt rising in her mind.
She didn't think there was anything dirty there. She had showered before going out, her dress was brand new, and there was no dust in the mall.
But the older brother's expression was so serious, almost to the point of being obstinate.
The tissue was rubbed back and forth on her skin, the movements light but repeated again and again, as if there were some invisible stains there that needed to be wiped off with force.
He had been rubbing for a long time and showed no signs of stopping; the skin on his shoulder had already turned slightly red.
Wen Qing couldn't help but remind him, "Brother, you've been wiping it for so long, it should be clean by now, right?"
Wen Fan suddenly came to his senses.
He saw that the small patch of fair skin had turned a glaring red from rubbing, his fingers stiffened for a moment, and he immediately withdrew his hand, his eyes filled with guilt.
"I'm sorry, Qingqing, I got a little carried away and used too much force. Do you... feel any pain?"
Wen Qing glanced down and saw that her skin was only slightly red, but it would go away in a while and was not a problem at all.
She waved her hand and smiled to reassure him that everything was alright.
But in the instant she lowered her head, a vague thought suddenly flashed through her mind.
The spot that my brother just wiped seems to be the spot where Fu Anhe's hand touched when he hugged her.
……
On the day of Su Yilan's uncle's birthday, Su Yilan drove to pick her up in advance.
The car stopped downstairs in the old residential area. Su Yilan leaned out of the passenger seat and waved to her. When she saw Wen Qing walk out of the building, she was stunned for a moment, and then let out an undisguised exclamation.
"Wenwen! You look so beautiful today!"
Wen Qing wore that gray-blue dress, and her long black hair was not tied into a ponytail as usual, but instead braided into a loose braid at the back of her head, with a small beige bow tied at the end, and a few strands of hair hanging down beside her ears.
She was already beautiful, and with this dress and braids, she looked like a girl who had stepped out of a classical oil painting, gentle and elegant.
She walked to the car door, feeling a little embarrassed by Su Yilan's praise. She reached out and touched her braid, saying softly.
"My brother did my hair; I'm not very good at braiding it."
Su Yilan followed her gaze to the entrance of the building.
Wen Fan stood there, wearing a dark hoodie, his hands in his pockets, watching them leave.
He walked over, nodded slightly to Su Yilan, and spoke in a gentle yet solemn tone.
"Miss Su, could you please take good care of Qingqing today? It's her first time attending this kind of event, so she might be a little uncomfortable... Also, she's not in good health, so she can't get too tired or stay out for too long..."
Su Yilan was stunned for a moment, probably because she was a little surprised to be asked a favor by someone her age in such a tone that was almost like that of an elder.
But she quickly came to her senses, patted her chest vigorously, and spoke in a cheerful tone.
"Don't worry, Brother Wen, I'll be her bodyguard the whole day. I guarantee I'll bring her back exactly as she was taken out!"
Wen Qing got into the car, rolled down the window, and waved to Wen Fan.
Wen Fan bent down and couldn't help but give him several more instructions, such as not to silence his phone, not to drink alcohol, not to eat anything too cold, and to send him a message before he finished so he could come pick him up.
Warmly agreed to each request.
The car started slowly, and Wen Qing saw in the rearview mirror that Wen Fan was still standing there, his hands out of his pockets and hanging at his sides, his eyes following their car until they turned the corner and disappeared from sight.
Su Yilan, resting her chin on her hand, said with genuine envy, "Your brother is so good to you."
Wen Qing looked away, a smile curving her lips: "Yes, he's the best brother in the world."
"It's a pity I only have a hateful younger brother," Su Yilan leaned back in her seat and sighed. "If only I could have an older sister or brother instead."
"But I see that you two have a pretty good relationship."
"Okay? If my brother didn't look like me, I would have kicked him far away."
Although Su Yilan complained, she couldn't hide the affection in her tone.
"Yesterday, he almost dropped my cosmetics because of a fight over the remote control. I chased him up three floors."
Wen Qing couldn't help but laugh when she heard this.
Although Su Yilan said she wished she could pack up Su Yi'an and send him away, she was the one who stayed with her younger brother and tried to find a solution when Su Yi'an ruined his painting last time.
These siblings may complain about each other, but they probably care about each other more than anyone else.
As the car entered the villa area on the outskirts of the city, the greenery on both sides of the road became increasingly exquisite.
Upon arriving at the Su family villa, Wen Qing got out of the car. Looking at the brightly lit three-story building in front of her, most of the mental preparation she had made along the way instantly collapsed.
The lawn in front of the villa was covered with flowers and decorative lights, and a row of luxury cars whose names I didn't know were parked in front of the door. Guests dressed in formal attire walked in in twos and threes, chatting and laughing.
She stood there, her fingers unconsciously tightening around the bag strap.
Su Yilan noticed her nervousness, reached out and took her arm, and whispered in her ear.
"Don't be nervous, my family is very nice. You'll be with me today, and I'll make sure you eat well and have fun. You don't have to worry about anything."
Her words were like a reassuring pill; Wenqing took a deep breath and nodded.
Upon entering the banquet hall, the lights were dazzling.
The hall has a ceiling height of at least six meters, and a huge crystal chandelier hangs down from the dome, refracting countless tiny rays of light.
The long table was covered with a cream-colored tablecloth and was filled with exquisite pastries, fruits, and a champagne tower. The air was filled with a faint fragrance of flowers and the sweetness of champagne.
As soon as Su Yilan entered the door, someone came up to greet her.
Most of the people who came were relatives or business partners who had dealings with the Su family. When they saw Su Yilan arm in arm with a beautiful unfamiliar girl, their curious gazes all fell on Wen Qing.
"Yilan, who is this...?"
"This is my good friend, Wenqing."
Su Yilan introduced herself openly and generously, without hiding anything.
"Oh? Her surname is Wen? I've never heard of her before. Which family's daughter is she?"
Su Yilan frowned and retorted without any politeness.
"Why are you asking so many questions? Do you really like prying into people's family backgrounds? Are you checking their household registration?"
The man was speechless, gave an awkward laugh, and left with his wine glass.
Su Yilan snorted, grabbed Wen Qing's hand, and walked straight inside, talking as they went.
"Ignore these people, they can't stop talking about their family background, it's so annoying! Come on, I'll take you to eat the most delicious little cakes."
