Ghost Immortal

Chapter 55 Trouble

Li Feng was manipulating the puppets when he caught a glimpse of Qiu Sheng jumping off the stage out of the corner of his eye, and his heart tightened instantly.

"Senior brother, what are you doing!"

He tried to reach out and grab Qiu Sheng, but Qiu Sheng walked very fast, passing through the rice circle in a few steps and squeezing into the crowd of ghosts.

The ghosts chained together moved aside to make way for him.

Qiu Sheng walked up to the white-clad female ghost and, with the help of his ghost eyes, saw her even more clearly.

The white-clad female ghost raised her head and looked at him with slight surprise.

Her eyes were a pale amber color, clear and bright, without the turbidity and resentment commonly seen in ghosts.

"Can you see me?"

Her voice was soft and gentle, making one feel tender and sympathetic.

Qiu Sheng was so captivated by her voice that he almost lost his mind, completely forgetting that he was still among the ghosts and also forgetting the warning from Master Si Mei.

He grinned foolishly, as if he were mesmerized.

He drooled as he reached out and touched the female ghost's face.

"Girl, don't be afraid, I'm not a bad person. What's your name? What are you doing here?"

The white-clad female ghost seemed startled by his sudden action and instinctively took a half-step back.

But Qiu Sheng's fingers had already touched her cheek.

What does a ghost's face feel like to touch?

Qiu Sheng felt as if he had touched a piece of cold silk, without any warmth.

But the icy touch didn't sober him up; instead, it made him even more curious.

Li Feng was stunned when he saw this.

How could Qiu Sheng be so foolish as to offer himself up and be bewitched by a ghost?

He shoved the control lever into Qiu Lan's hands, leaped off the stage, and rushed toward Qiu Sheng, trying to pull him back.

But as soon as he reached the edge of the glutinous rice circle, he saw several gazes from deep within the ghost horde simultaneously turn towards Qiu Sheng.

Their eyes glowed with a faint green light.

A ghostly green light shone among the ghosts, six pairs in total.

The six pairs of eyes belong to male ghosts, dressed in clothes from different eras, including scholars, warriors, and ghosts dressed as government officials in black robes.

But on their faces, the same expression of anger was now on.

Li Feng's heart skipped a beat.

These male ghosts are all suitors of the female ghost in white!

Even though a ghost is dead, its obsessions from its lifetime will not easily dissipate.

Admiration, jealousy, and possessiveness—these negative emotions can become even stronger when fueled by resentment.

These male ghosts were clearly suitors of the white-clad female ghost, either during her lifetime or after her death.

They absolutely cannot tolerate anyone else reaching out and touching the woman they desire.

The male ghost dressed in a scholar's robe was the first to act.

"roar!!"

He let out a low growl, broke free of his chains, and lunged at Qiu Sheng.

This break free was like toppling the first domino.

Six male ghosts who were pursuing the female ghost broke free of their chains at the same time and pounced on Qiu Sheng with howls.

The other ghosts, infected by their resentment, also began to stir, pulling at the chains around their necks.

The chains creaked and groaned as the ghosts pulled on them. Several resentful spirits had broken free and joined the attack on Qiu Sheng.

In the blink of an eye, more than a dozen ghosts surrounded Qiu Sheng.

Qiu Sheng then snapped out of his lustful daze, and the smile on his face instantly froze.

He turned to run, but the ghosts surrounded him from all sides, leaving him no opening.

Pairs of pale hands reached out from the horde of ghosts, grabbing at his face and neck.

"A ghost! Help! Master, help me!"

Qiu Sheng screamed in terror, desperately trying to rush outside.

However, his spiritual power was completely suppressed by the yin energy of the ghosts, and he couldn't even release the most basic protective spells.

A pair of ghostly hands gripped his shoulders, their nails digging into his flesh like icicles.

Li Feng rushed outside the glutinous rice circle, his right palm poised to unleash a thunderbolt.

But he dared not rashly send them out.

Qiu Sheng was surrounded by ghosts, and if the palm lightning missed, it could easily injure him.

He took out an exorcism talisman from his pocket, and was about to slap it on the ghost blocking his way when he suddenly heard the sharp laughter of the White Impermanence behind him.

"Interesting! Old Fan, look at this play! It's much better than the 'Zhong Kui Catches Ghosts' that was just performed on stage!"

Bai Wuchang, holding a wine bowl, watched with great interest as the ghosts surrounded and attacked Qiu Sheng.

His stiff smile was even more exaggerated than before, with his mouth splitting to his ears, revealing two rows of fine, sharp white teeth.

I've also seen the Black Impermanence; his empty eyes are quite eerie.

"That unfilial disciple Qiu Sheng is always causing trouble!"

The Taoist priest with four eyebrows turned ashen-faced, cursing his wicked disciple as he drew his peach wood sword.

"My lords, please keep your ghosts in check!"

White Impermanence waved his hand and laughed even more heartily.

"Why should I care? Working in the underworld is incredibly boring. It's a rare treat to see living people being chased by ghosts. It's a way to pass the time."

"Your apprentice brought this upon himself by touching the female ghost's face. These ghosts were all her suitors in life. If you were in her shoes, could you tolerate seeing another man touching the girl he liked?"

The Taoist priest with four eyebrows twitched at the corner of his mouth.

He tried to explain, but Qiu Sheng's screams echoed from the horde of ghosts again.

"Help! Master, help me!"

Without further hesitation, Li Feng slapped the exorcism talisman onto the ghost's back.

The talisman exploded with a pale golden light, and the ghost was sent flying backward, knocking over several of its companions behind it.

A brief gap appeared in the encirclement of the ghost horde.

Taking advantage of the opportunity, Li Feng rushed in, grabbed Qiu Sheng by the back of his collar, and dragged him out forcefully.

Qiu Sheng was covered in wounds from being grabbed by the ghostly hand; his Taoist robe was torn in several places, and there were several bloody marks on his face.

But he didn't care about the pain at all. He grabbed Li Feng's arm tightly and scrambled out of the room.

Just as the two broke out of the encirclement of the ghosts, a series of crisp sounds of breaking chains came from behind them.

"Snap! Snap! Snap!"

The ghosts, chained together by the underworld officials, pulled at each other in the chaos, breaking several links of the chain.

Once the chains broke, more ghosts broke free and surged in all directions like a flood bursting its banks.

They actually managed to escape in the chaos!

Bai Wuchang immediately stopped laughing.

"Oh no!"

He put down his wine bowl and untied a black whip from his waist.

The whip was made of an unknown type of leather, and three copper coins were hung at the tip.

He flicked the whip through the air, and the copper coins made a sharp whistling sound.

Several ghosts at the forefront were struck by the whip's gust of wind, letting out painful howls as they were knocked down.

But it was too late.

After the chains broke, more than fifty ghosts broke free.

These fifty-odd ghosts scattered and fled like a flock of startled birds, directly escaping the mortuary.

The underworld officials, consisting of only Black and White Impermanence, were simply unable to stop so many ghosts scattering and fleeing.

Black Impermanence had no choice but to take action.

His movements were swift; he had been frozen stiff just moments before, but now he transformed into a black shadow, moving rapidly across the open ground.

The fleeing ghosts were all dragged back to their original positions by their ankles, their soul-hooking ropes wrapped around them.

When the Soul-Hooking Rope is thrown out, it is only as thick as a finger, but when it is pulled back, it expands to the thickness of an arm, like a live snake winding in the air.

But no matter how fast he is, he can only catch them one by one.

More than fifty ghosts scattered and fled, and he caught more than a dozen of them.

The remaining thirty-odd people had escaped the control of the underworld officials and disappeared into the night.

Many wandering spirits who were not chained were also disturbed during the riot.

They had been quietly squatting outside the glutinous rice circle, watching the puppet show, but now, frightened by the commotion of the ghosts, they scattered in all directions.

For a moment, the open space in front of the mortuary was filled with ghostly wails and howls, and a chilling wind blew.

The incense and candles on the offering table were all blown out by the eerie wind, and the paper lantern of the White Impermanence flickered in the wind, its pale green flame almost going out several times.

He held the lantern high, and the runes on the lantern's cover glowed with a dark green light, barely suppressing the eerie wind.

But he no longer had time to catch ghosts.

The riots not only disturbed the ghosts, but also stirred up things lurking nearby.

A rustling sound came from outside the walls of the mortuary.

The sound was extremely dense and subtle, like countless insects crawling on withered leaves.

Immediately afterwards, wisps of black mist seeped in through the cracks in the courtyard wall, and distorted human face outlines emerged from the mist.

The eyes of those faces glowed with eerie green light, exactly the same as the light emanating from the Soul-Devouring Gu.

The four-browed Taoist priest's expression changed drastically, and he exclaimed in horror, "Oh no, Master Gu is here!"
