Fairy Eye

Chapter 5 Testing Spiritual Roots

Guiyuan Sect, located in the Guiyuan Mountains in central Jingzhou, has tens of thousands of disciples and is the largest cultivation sect in Jingzhou. It is known as the leader of the righteous path.

The entire mountain range is majestic and undulating, with numerous branches, towering peaks interspersed with forests, and rosy clouds dancing with cranes, resembling a fairyland on earth.

Early that morning, three figures appeared on a mountain square south of the Guiyuan Sect.

Leading the way was an old man in a green robe, followed by a short, stout boy and a thin young man with one side of his face blackened.

The three of them continued without stopping and went straight to the stone hall with the plaque "Yinxian Hall" hanging on it.

"Steward, you're back."

There was a young cultivator in the hall. When he saw the old man in the green robe enter, he quickly came up and bowed.

"Um."

Master Zhang nodded.

"These two are the immortal seedlings I found in Shuanghe Town. Please register them for entry."

"OK."

The young monk respectfully agreed.

Then he took out a jade mirror from a drawer in the wall and said to Han Lin and Yue Qingshan:

"Before registration, I need to test the grade of your spiritual roots. If your spiritual roots are excellent, you may be able to receive special training from the sect. If your spiritual roots are average, you will have to start from the bottom and climb up step by step on your own."

Yue Qingshan asked, "May I ask, senior, what kind of spiritual root is considered good?"

The young cultivator said, "The quality of a spiritual root's talent is related to its purity. Those with a single-attribute spiritual root are called celestial spiritual roots in the cultivation world. Cultivation is incredibly easy for them, and they consume the fewest resources."

"Those with dual spiritual roots are called earth spiritual roots. They can cultivate quite quickly, but they are much inferior to those with heaven spiritual roots."

"Those with three spiritual roots are just ordinary spiritual roots. The vast majority of people fall into this category. They need a great opportunity to stand out from the crowd."

"As for those with three or fewer spiritual roots, or four or five spiritual roots, there's no need to discuss them. In the cultivation world, these are called pseudo-spiritual roots and mixed spiritual roots."

"Those with pseudo-spiritual roots may still have a chance to establish their foundation if they have an extraordinary opportunity."

"Those with mixed spiritual roots, let alone Foundation Establishment, will probably only be able to linger below the third level of Qi Refining even if they spend their entire lives trying."

At this point, the young cultivator smiled slightly and said, "In short, the fewer spiritual root attributes one has, the better one's talent."

"I see."

Yue Qingshan nodded in realization.

Han Lin remained calm, because he had already heard the old man withered blood talk about the grade of spiritual roots back at the Chicken Cry Temple.

However, the old man with withered blood did not have the means to detect spiritual roots, so he did not know what kind of talent he had.

At this moment, the young cultivator handed the jade mirror in his hand to Yue Qingshan: "This is the Spirit Mirror for testing spiritual root attributes. Place your hand on it."

"Yes, senior brother."

Upon hearing this, Yue Qingshan quickly reached out and gently placed his hand on the surface of the jade mirror.

Han Lin looked up and saw that the beads around the jade mirror lit up one after another, first in gold, then in red, and finally in brown.

But after three, there was no further activity.

"The three spiritual roots of metal, wood, and earth are not the best, but they are not the worst either." Upon seeing this, Immortal Zhang smiled and nodded, appearing fairly satisfied.

"Senior, can my spiritual root be cultivated exceptionally?" Yue Qingshan asked with delight, looking at Zhang Xianchang.

"No, three spiritual roots are just ordinary spiritual roots, not enough to qualify for exceptional training. You'll have to start as a menial disciple. However, if you're willing to work hard, you still have a chance to reach Foundation Establishment in this lifetime!"

"I see."

Yue Qingshan was slightly disappointed, but then firmly said, "I will definitely try my best!"

"Um."

Zhang Xianchang nodded and said to the young cultivator, "Xiao He, hurry up and test Han Lin as well. I'm a little tired, let's finish early and go back to rest."

"OK."

The young cultivator handed the Spirit Communication Mirror to Han Lin, saying, "Junior Brother Han Lin, it's your turn."

"it is good."

Han Lin, full of anticipation, slowly pressed his hand on it.

Then, an unbelievable scene unfolded.

All nine beads around the Spirit Mirror—gold, green, blue, red, brown, white, purple, bright yellow, and black—suddenly lit up.

"What's going on?!"

Zhang Xianchang rubbed his eyes vigorously, as if he had seen a ghost, and looked at the equally dumbfounded young cultivator, "Nine, nine spiritual roots?"

The young cultivator swallowed hard. "Okay, that seems to be true..."

"How is this possible? Five spiritual roots are already the worst in the world, how can there be nine spiritual roots! Could the Spirit Mirror be broken?"

Zhang Xianchang found it hard to believe, so he snatched the Spirit Communication Mirror and tested it on himself, only to find that only three beads lit up.

"It's not broken?"

He handed the Psychic Mirror to Han Lin again and asked him to test it once more. The result was the same as before: all nine lights were on.

Zhang Xianchang and the young cultivator were completely dumbfounded, standing there speechless for a long time.

After a long while, Zhang Xianchang finally spoke with a furrowed brow: "Han Lin, some of what I'm about to say may be a little harsh, but it's all the truth. You should be prepared."

Although Han Lin also found it hard to believe that he would be found to have such a terrible spiritual root talent, he had been used to being ridiculed since childhood, so his resilience was stronger than that of normal people.

Hearing this, he nodded and said, "Please speak, senior."

Master Zhang took a deep breath and said, "With your talent, let alone our Guiyuan Sect, I'm afraid you can't find another like you in the entire cultivation world."

"Such talent, whether in terms of the speed of absorbing and refining spiritual energy or the difficulty of breaking through bottlenecks, is many times greater than that of ordinary people."

"Perhaps I'll never be able to reach the first level of Qi Refining in this lifetime. Rather than wasting time on arduous cultivation, I might as well return to the mundane world and live an ordinary life."

"This isn't meant to discourage you, it's just the truth!"

He softened his tone at this point.

"Of course, this is just a suggestion. If you would rather stay in Guiyuan Sect as a servant for the rest of your life, I will not force you to leave. The choice is yours."

He said this only because Han Lin had given him that piece of green bronze; otherwise, given Han Lin's talent, he would most likely have been kicked out immediately.

Upon hearing this, the young cultivator hesitated before saying, "Master Steward, with his talent, keeping him in the sect might be difficult to explain to the higher-ups..."

Master Zhang said, "What's there to explain! We didn't give him any special treatment; we just made him start as a menial worker. If he can earn resources from the sect, that's his skill!"

"With so many sects possessing three or four spiritual roots, who can guarantee that they will definitely achieve Foundation Establishment and become a valuable member of the sect?"

"Well, that's true."

The young cultivator shrank back and said no more.

Zhang Xianchang looked at Han Lin and said, "Han Lin, the choice is yours."

"I choose to stay."

Han Lin made his decision almost without thinking.

If this happened to someone else, they might have had a choice, but he didn't.

Not to mention that the old man withered blood had not completed his mission, going out now would definitely mean certain death. Even without the old man withered blood, he would not choose to go back and be looked down upon.

Even if Guiyuan Sect is bad, it's still a celestial sect, isn't it?

Moreover, he only lacked talent, not that he was incapable of cultivation, so he still held onto a sliver of hope for himself.

"OK!"

"Since you've chosen to stay, then so be it. Xiao He, isn't the Qinglonghe Mine short of workers? Register them and send them to Qinglonghe!"

Seeing that Han Lin had made his choice, Zhang Xianchang stopped trying to persuade him, gave the young cultivator a few instructions, and then turned and left.
