Chapter 23 Wayne's Marksmanship
Upon hearing Theodore's question, Wayne seemed to finally understand what the other man was trying to do.
Is this a provocation?
Theodore glanced again at the gun in Wayne's hand:
"Oh dear, the gun is quite nice, it's a pity you've wasted it."
Lillian forced a smile and tried her best to respond politely:
"Mr. Theodore, everyone has a field they encounter for the first time, and everyone has room for improvement. Wayne is handling a gun for the first time, and he has already made rapid progress. Unlike you, Mr. Theodore, who has been dressing for so many years, yet your fashion sense hasn't improved at all."
Theodore looked embarrassed, glanced at his clothes, and explained:
"Miss Lillian, oh no, Lady Lillian, these are all very tasteful clothes, each with a remarkable history. This jacket is the actual racing suit worn by a racing champion fifty years ago, and these sunglasses were a favorite of a veteran movie star..."
Wayne glanced at Theodore with a strange look in his eyes.
So it turns out this person was wearing the clothes of a dead person?
That really shows good taste and aesthetic sense.
"You have such great taste!" Lillian said with a smile.
Theodore stopped arguing and admitted his mistake:
"Oh, no, no, I certainly don't have the taste of Lady Lillian. You're right, I'll definitely improve. Lady Lillian, you are the most beautiful woman I've ever seen, and your approval is very important to Theodore."
Lillian clasped her hands in front of her, once again displaying a reserved and polite demeanor:
"Thank you for your approval, Mr. Theodore, but there's really no need for that. Of course, if Mr. Theodore wants to please me, I have a suggestion: Mr. Theodore, just stay away from me. I'll be very happy then."
Only then did Wayne understand the situation.
So this blond guy likes Lillian, or even has a mix of fear and respect for her?
[Perception Lv.1 - Observation of the Microscopic] Progress 20.7%
Theodore looked embarrassed and didn't want to continue the conversation, so he could only point at Wayne and change the subject:
"Lady Lillian, it's a fact that his marksmanship is terrible, so why defend him?"
Lillian had complete confidence in Wayne: "That's why I'm teaching him step by step. Is there a problem?"
"I refuse to accept this." Theodore said arrogantly, "Lady Lillian, you won't even teach me how to dress, but you're teaching him how to masturbate. He's not worthy at all."
"Whether I'm worthy or not has nothing to do with Mr. Theodore. I, Lillian, am happy as long as I'm willing," Lillian retorted, already raising her fist with a smile.
"Stop, stop." Seeing Lillian's posture, Theodore took two steps back, somewhat intimidated. "Lady Lillian, you said he's about to become a full-fledged investigator, so I'll make a bet with him. I bet his marksmanship isn't up to the standard of a full-fledged investigator."
"Does this have anything to do with Mr. Theodore? Are you not planning to leave until you start something today?" The air around Lillian began to tremble.
"Hey, Wayne, it's just a matter of firing a few shots, what are you chickening out for? Are you even a man?" Theodore's gaze was fixed on Wayne.
Lillian turned around and gave Wayne a look, signaling him to ignore Theodore.
"Okay. I bet," Wayne said.
As the heir to the Weber family business, with such a powerful backer, he didn't care about gambling, and there were almost no gambles he couldn't afford to lose. Besides, this was just a small gamble; he simply wanted to take the opportunity to test something.
Last night he discovered that breathing can put the brain into a state of excitement and allow for high concentration.
When I was practicing shooting earlier, I intentionally tried to get back into that excited state and see what kind of marksmanship I could produce when my attention was focused to the limit. However, before I could do that, Theodore interrupted me.
Now is the perfect opportunity to try. Afraid of losing? You're too excited to even think about it.
Lillian was taken aback, but instinctively respected Wayne's choice.
Theodore's face lit up with joy: "Haha, that's manly enough, you're a good match now."
"What is the marksmanship level of a formal investigator?" Wayne asked.
Theodore explained with a smile:
"Although the standards are not so fixed, under normal circumstances, at least three out of five shots should hit the head of the human-shaped target, and one shot should hit the center of the eyebrow."
Wayne glanced at Lillian, who nodded slightly.
This shows that Theodore's standards were very reasonable.
"Okay, I'll give it a try." Following his memory, Wayne opened the cylinder, loaded the bullet, closed the cylinder, and held the pistol in his hand.
Theodore narrowed his eyes, carefully observing Wayne's grip on the gun. It was indeed very clumsy, undoubtedly a novice. He then laughed and said:
"Bro, it's up to you how you do."
"Since we're going to gamble, let's switch to a different target lane. The targets on this lane are already riddled with bullet holes, which could affect our performance," Lillian suggested.
"Fine, you can change it." Theodore said indifferently.
And so, Wayne switched to a different target lane.
He slowly raised his revolver and aimed at the human-shaped target at the far end.
You must shoot three times in the head and one time between the eyebrows.
Try to recall the feeling you just experienced and concentrate.
Using the foreign sac in his chest cavity, Wayne controlled the force and gently inhaled.
The airbags were highly efficient at drawing in air, creating a brief vacuum around him. Then, air rushed into the vacuum, creating a gentle breeze.
Continue inhaling, then exhaling...
With an excess of oxygen absorbed and utilized, Wein's blood oxygen levels rose sharply, his cerebral cortex became highly excited, and his concentration became extraordinary.
Wayne felt that, in this brief moment, he seemed to be able to accomplish anything with superhuman efficiency.
This includes using that tiny bit of muscle memory to optimize aiming and shooting.
Right now.
Wayne's wrists were steady, his perception was excellent, and his breathing allowed him to control his body to the fullest extent.
Bang bang bang bang bang.
Five gunshots rang out in succession.
Theodore and Lillian looked toward the human-shaped target.
The human-shaped target only had three bullet holes.
One bullet hole was located between the eyebrows, while the other two bullet holes were located in other parts of the head.
No other bullet marks were found on the wall behind the target.
This means that three out of Wayne's five bullets hit the same spot, which was basically between his eyebrows.
Even if it wasn't between the eyebrows, five bullets still met the standard of one hitting between the eyebrows and at least three hitting the head.
Wei En was panting heavily, with fine beads of sweat on his forehead. In the last five seconds, he had almost pushed his body to its limit.
[Breathing Lv.1 - Empty Breath] Progress 4.32%
Theodore and Lillian were both experienced and confirmed Wayne's shooting results after only a brief examination.
Lillian's eyes lit up with surprise, and she gave Wayne a thumbs-up with a smile.
Wayne wiped away a bead of sweat, feeling a slight headache, likely due to the high workload. After all, the human body has its limits.
Theodore frowned as he looked at the bullet holes on the target, finding it all unbelievable.
"Are you kidding me? Is this guy really a first-timer with a gun?"
"Judging from the way he held the gun, he's definitely a beginner."
"That shouldn't be the case. Before I arrived, his marksmanship was indeed inaccurate. There's only one possibility: he learned it on the spot."
"If he can learn at such an astonishing speed, just how terrifying must his talent for controlling his body be?"
"You can hardly find anyone like that even in the operations section."
Then, abandoning his arrogant attitude, he said with a face full of admiration:
"Okay, brother, you're really something. I was wrong before, my attitude was bad, I admit my mistake, and I'm willing to accept defeat."
This blond guy has a pretty straightforward temper, and he's not a bad person at heart.
Okay, I almost forgot that he was the leader of the first group of the action section, which is also his superior, but he didn't put on any airs at all.
With that thought in mind, Wayne waved his hand and said, "It's nothing, just consider it making a friend."
"Brother, you've got real class." Theodore pulled a magazine from his pocket, took out a few silver-gray bullets, and handed them to Wayne.
"This is the prize money for the bet: a few mithril bullets from a revolver. They're rare in the Eastern Empire, and can cause decent damage even with high reality aberration. They're all yours."
