Chapter 8 Chen Shujie's First Time Not Getting Meat

That evening, the rabbit was stewed by Second Aunt Chen Xiufen, who said it was to nourish Chen Shuyan, who was "studying hard."

When it was time for dinner, a large pot of stewed rabbit with potatoes was served, steaming hot, and the aroma of meat mixed with the soy sauce wafted into people's noses.

As soon as the bowl was set down, Old Mrs. Chen's chopsticks swiftly reached for a thick piece of rabbit leg meat.

Wang Jinzhu was quick-witted and nimble-fingered, striking almost simultaneously. With steady, precise, and ruthless chopsticks, she picked up several large pieces of good cuts of meat, bone and all, first placing them in Chen Tianfang's bowl, and then quickly placing a large piece in the bowls of her father-in-law Chen Shi, mother-in-law Chen Yuxiang, and her children Xiao Tianrun and Xiao Tianwei, who were eagerly eyeing the meat.

The movements were fluid and seamless. By the time everyone realized what was happening, almost half of the decent pieces of meat in the basin had disappeared.

Old Mrs. Chen's chopsticks froze in mid-air, her eyes wide with shock. She slammed her hand on the table and yelled, "You troublemaker! You've gone too far! Do you think you have the right to divide this meat? You ill-mannered brat, I'll tear your mouth apart!"

As she spoke, she stood up and raised her hand to slap Wang Jinzhu across the face.

The slap was about to land with a gust of wind when a thick, strong arm covered in old and new scars steadily came across, blocking Wang Jinzhu's path like an iron hoop.

It was Chen Tianfang.

He didn't speak, but stood there silently, his figure like a mountain. The bulging muscles and bulging veins on his arms revealed an inviolable power.

Grandma Chen's slap landed squarely on his forearm, but the impact made his palm sting, and he cried out in pain.

Wang Jinzhu raised her eyes to look at the silent man beside her, a barely perceptible curve appearing at the corner of her lips. She then quickly winked at him, her eyes gleaming with approval and a hint of slyness. Not bad, you've improved.

When Chen Tianfang met her bright eyes, his ears burned, and his dark face flushed slightly. He turned his head away uncomfortably.

Seeing that she couldn't beat Wang Jinzhu, Old Mrs. Chen was so angry that her chest heaved, but she was helpless against her tall and strong eldest grandson. She glared fiercely at the eldest son's family members, then turned around and vented her anger on the meat basin.

She moved quickly and accurately, picking up the three largest and meatiest pieces with her chopsticks and piling them all into Chen Shuyan's bowl, making it overflow.

"My dear grandson, studying is so mentally taxing, eat more and get some nourishment!"

Then, she picked up a piece for her newly arrived granddaughter-in-law, Liu Yiyi, and another for Old Man Chen, who had been keeping his head down and not saying a word, her actions carrying an unquestionable air of dominance.

Seeing that there were only two pieces of meat left in the bowl, Chen Xiufen and Chen Yang exchanged a glance, and their chopsticks shot out like lightning, "whoosh," and they grabbed the piece of meat and put it into their own bowls, protecting it tightly.

In the blink of an eye, the pot of rabbit meat was completely devoured, leaving only some potatoes and broth in the pot.

The table fell silent instantly.

Only Chen Shujie remained, staring blankly at the almost empty bowl, then looking blankly at the pieces of meat in everyone else's bowls. There was meat in her parents' bowl, in her grandparents' bowl, in her sister-in-law's bowl, in her older brother's bowl, in her new sister-in-law's bowl, and even in the youngest, Tianrun and Tianwei's bowl.

She was the only one who didn't have it.

She looked at her mother, Chen Xiufen. Her mother was looking down, quickly shoveling the piece of meat from the bowl into her mouth, seemingly oblivious to her daughter's gaze. Her father was doing the same.

Finally, she looked at her eldest brother, Chen Shuyan. This promising scholar, on whom the whole family placed their hopes and who was destined to bring honor to their ancestors, had three large pieces of meat piled in his bowl.

Noticing her sister's gaze, Chen Shuyan not only didn't share a bite with her, but instead turned slightly to the side and subconsciously used her other hand to protect the rim of the bowl. That defensive posture stung Chen Shujie's eyes.

At that moment, Chen Shujie felt as if her heart had been soaked in ice water in the twelfth lunar month, cold and painful, and utterly chilled.

Everyone else had meat, except her.

Her parents only had eyes for her older brother and never saw her, their daughter. And this kind older brother of hers ate all three pieces of meat by himself, yet he wouldn't even share a drop of the gravy with her.

My mother used to say that if my brother does well, the whole family will do well. She told me to be considerate of my brother and do more chores, so that when he becomes successful, he will naturally not forget me.

Help him? Do you still want her to work tirelessly from dawn till dusk, saving every penny, to support his education and pave the way for him, just like before?

Chen Shujie lowered her head, forcefully shoveling the watery potato chunks and rice into her bowl. She bit her lower lip tightly, and a mixture of grievance, resentment, and cold hatred quietly grew in her heart.

Want to eat fart.

Wang Jinzhu took it all in, a cold smile playing on her lips, but she kept it hidden. She pulled Chen Tianfang down to sit, slowly eating the meat in her bowl, occasionally placing some potatoes on Chen Tianrun and Chen Tianwei's plates, saying gently, "Eat slowly, there's enough for everyone."

For once, the eldest son and his family members were able to eat real meat at this meal, and Chen Tianrun and Chen Tianwei had very satisfied expressions on their faces.

After the meal, no one in the eldest son's family slacked off; they all worked together to clean up the table and the kitchen.

Today was supposed to be the eldest son's turn to cook, but Second Aunt insisted on cooking herself because she was afraid they would steal some. "Thank you, Second Aunt! Your rabbit is so delicious, hehe!" Wang Jinzhu said casually as she tidied up.
