Chapter 61 The Situation in the Military Camp
Bang bang bang bang bang—the sound of the twin anti-aircraft guns rang out, shaking the entire vehicle. Shells swept past the two soldiers, and with a thud, they were instantly blown to pieces, blood and debris flying everywhere.
"Patrick definitely wouldn't like doing this job," Rosen muttered to himself, his voice mostly drowned out by the sound of the cannon fire. "It'll probably be hard to even sweep now."
The sight of several shells blowing people to pieces was so shocking that it terrified people more than any scream. After the car crashed through the wall, not a single person dared to stand up and block the way.
After leaving the wall, we drove a short distance and found three cars parked to the north, with several people standing next to them aiming guns at Bigfoot and firing.
Rosen cranked the cannon and quickly turned it around. When the men saw the two dark cannon barrels pointed at them, they were so frightened that they scattered and fled, scrambling and crawling.
However, it was of no use. After a few loud bangs, the three cars were smashed into a pile of smoking scrap metal, and several clouds of blood mist exploded in the air. Only two people who managed to lie on the ground in time managed to escape this disaster.
Seeing that the three vehicles were wrecked, Leng Feng turned the steering wheel and sped off towards the eleven o'clock direction. Rosen, ignoring the two lucky ones lying on the ground, aimed his cannon at the northwest.
It was a wasteland with no decent cover, just a few dead trees lying on a steep slope about five meters high. That place was the only place where people could hide.
The moment the twin anti-aircraft guns fired, a figure hunched over and started running backwards from behind the fallen, withered tree.
However, it turned out that a person cannot outrun the speed of a gun. In the first round of fire, the sniper was not hit. The bullets grazed past him, hitting rocks and dead trees and exploding into a pile of fragments. He managed to slip through the gaps between the bullets.
Rosen narrowed his eyes, quickly cranked the horizontal bar back, and the muzzle swept past the figure again.
This time, Rosen only saw something like an arm fly into the sky through the aiming window, somersault in the sunlight, and then fall into the weeds. A crimson hue spread in the air, like a red flower suddenly blooming and then disappearing.
He didn't need to look a second time. Anyone grazed by the twin anti-aircraft guns never survived. Even if no vital organs were hit, the rapid blood loss alone could kill him within a minute.
Rosen released the foot pedal and let out a long breath. He leaned back against the steel plate of the cockpit, listening to the clanging and rolling of shell casings in the truck bed, and only then did he feel the dull pain in his chest and arms.
He listened to the commotion to the north, the gunfire crackling and exploding intermittently, making the battle seem even more intense. Rosen leaned back in the anti-aircraft gun seat, patted the roof of the vehicle, and shouted to Leng Feng inside, "Let's go check out the military camp to the north and see what's going on. Something's not right with this noise."
To be honest, he's gotten quite bold these days—with such a powerful weapon under his backside, who wouldn't feel cocky? Before, he would have already driven that beat-up pickup truck south.
Rosen was also quite puzzled. He wondered if the Red Turban Army had taken some kind of aphrodisiac or what, as they were rushing this way like they didn't care about their lives.
What's even stranger is that the Red Turban Army seems to have their eyes on him. His garbage dump is usually deserted; how did he get involved with these lunatics? He racked his brains for a long time but couldn't figure it out.
As the car approached the road leading to the military camp, Rosen could see the situation clearly from afar; it was far worse than he had imagined.
The gunfire gradually subsided. He couldn't see clearly inside the military camp, but people kept running out from the north. They were all wearing military uniforms, and most of them didn't even have guns with them.
Rosen shook his head. These government troops had fallen back into their old ways, collapsing as soon as a battle started, just like last time.
The rebels clearly had the upper hand, and the government troops seemed to be getting crushed again.
"Drive north and find a survivor to ask about the situation," Rosen shouted at Leng Feng.
No sooner had he finished speaking than a loud bang resounded in the military camp. The commotion was so great that it could be felt from a great distance, somewhat like the sound of a howitzer being fired.
"Do the government forces have artillery?" Leng Feng's voice drifted over from ahead, tinged with tension.
"Impossible," Rosen frowned. "They're probably rebels. Let's be careful. If things look bad, we'll retreat immediately. Don't be reckless."
The pickup truck steadily shuffled northwards. The iron gate to the north was wide open, and soldiers would occasionally run out from inside, each one covered in dust and dirt, perfectly illustrating the diversity of fleeing soldiers.
Rosen jumped out of the car and grabbed a soldier running past him. "What's going on inside?"
The soldier calmed down slightly after recognizing Rosen's face. "The other side...the other side is the Red Turban Army, they have a lot of tanks!"
Rosen's face immediately darkened. The Red Turban Army had raided an American base? Where in Uller could one find the resources to buy tanks? Not only would the government forces not buy them, but the Red Turban Army would not buy tanks either.
If they had the money to buy tanks, they could have easily bribed the people in the military camp to let them through.
"Where is your superior? Who's in command inside now?"
"The officer ran away! The deputy company commander was organizing a resistance, but he..." The soldier swallowed hard, his voice trembling, "...was blown to pieces by a single shell."
Rosen's eye twitched. After the soldier finished speaking, he broke free from Rosen's grasp and ran away as fast as he could.
Rosen peeked inside; the military camp was filled with thick smoke, obscuring the tanks. However, several sharp-eyed rebels wearing red scarves had spotted him and were pointing their guns in his direction.
"Damn." Rosen ducked and scrambled to the side of the car, climbing up on his hands and feet. Just then, a gunshot rang out, bullets striking the car with a clanging sound, like someone hammering metal.
After climbing into the truck bed, Rosen pounded on the roof and yelled at the top of his lungs, "Damn it, let's go! There's a tank! Don't just stand there!"
Less than two seconds later, the screeching sound of tires skidding on the ground rang out, and the truck lurched forward, nearly throwing Rosen out of the truck bed. He quickly grabbed the anti-aircraft gun mount, hurriedly sat in the gun position, and turned the crank to aim the muzzle at the military camp.
At this point, more rebels spotted the conspicuous pickup truck. Bullets clattered against the vehicle and fenders, creating a deafening clang.
Rosen gritted his teeth, turned the crank, aimed at the area with the most people, and slammed on the pedal. Thump thump thump thump thump—the anti-aircraft gun roared. The few Red Turban Army soldiers in his field of vision were instantly riddled with bullets, their limbs flying everywhere.
