Farming Life Starting in Africa
Chapter 226 Tracking
After hanging up the phone, Rosen put his phone on the dashboard and noticed that Guan Yuming was staring at him.
"What's wrong?"
Guan Yuming asked curiously, "You have friends here? I thought you had only been in the US for a few days and that the only people you knew were the construction workers and your neighbors."
Neighbors? Rosen thought to himself, he didn't have many neighbors. One was away on a long trip, and there was this peeping tom he hadn't seen in a while.
Rosen looked at the road ahead and said with a smile, "Yeah, I rescued him when I was fishing in an African river."
Guan Yuming looked at him as if he were an idiot, as if assessing how much exaggeration there was in his statement. Crocodiles in African rivers are much more ferocious than those in the United States.
He had met many business people and many people who talked big, and he always felt that Rosen was different from his uncle.
But now it seems the nephew took after his uncle! They both love to brag!
However, thinking of that phone number's nickname, he didn't say much. Only a fisherman would call something pulled from the river a "giant," it couldn't be a specialty of San Fernando Valley movie actors, could it?
Guan Yuming looked at the bustling scene outside the checkpoint and asked, "What does he do? He's that friend of yours who fished up the fish."
"He used to be in the army," Rosen recounted the story of Swagger and his unfortunate brother.
Guan Yuming, after hearing this, was not surprised at all. He had met many American soldiers and was not surprised by anything that could happen there.
But Guan Yuming was quite surprised when he heard Rosen talk about Swage's shooting results.
Swagger's ability to hit a first shot at 1600 meters, coupled with 87 confirmed kills, places him among the top-tier legendary shooters in the history of the U.S. Marine Corps.
Guan Yuming immediately became interested. Having served in the military, he knew very well how formidable such a person's abilities could be. "Which unit is he from?"
"He said he was from the Marine Corps' elite reconnaissance company..."
When Guan Yuming heard the words "Strong Reconnaissance Company," he said speechlessly, "The Americans really know how to play the game. People with this kind of ability can't even get into the top units of the US military. It seems they don't lack manpower at all."
At this point, he remembered Rosen's farm, which was short of manpower. "Your farm needs to hire people, right? You could see if he'd be willing to come. He could easily look after the farm for you."
Rosen raised an eyebrow. "That's what I was thinking too, that's why I invited him over..."
The vehicle soon entered the city of Macallan, where Guan Yuming needed to purchase some daily necessities.
Guan Yuming has been staying here recently, looking up travel guides for nearby attractions. His daughter is coming to visit him soon.
They went to the largest Chinese supermarket in the local Chinatown. As soon as they entered, several people dressed as store clerks greeted Guan Yuming.
It seems Guan Yuming is very familiar with the people here; he's a regular customer.
The supermarket wasn't crowded, and the bright lights illuminated the shelves, making the rows of bottles and jars clearly visible.
Lawson pushed his shopping cart down the aisle, squinting at the price tags. A box of chilled chicken breast, 1.5 pounds (about 680 grams), cost $15. A pound bag of chicken wings was $8. Four meat patties were $12. Vegetables and fruits were even more expensive.
He felt that the prices here were acceptable if the unit was RMB, after all, it's a developed country.
However, if it's written in US dollars, it's very expensive; even cattle and horses in developed countries aren't having an easy time.
Just as Rosen was picking and choosing, Guan Yuming suddenly leaned over and whispered, "Someone is following you."
Rosen reached for a box of watermelon and put it in his shopping cart with a casual gesture, then said in a low voice without turning his head, "Following me? Are you sure you mean following me?"
"Yeah, he's right behind you on the third shelf, wearing a baseball cap. He's been watching you ever since you walked into the supermarket."
After he finished speaking, he took a packet of pickled vegetables and put it into his shopping basket, as if the conversation was just the two of them discussing what to buy for dinner.
Rosen thought to himself, "I haven't made any enemies during my time in America, so who could be following me?"
Guan Yuming paused in front of the freezer for a moment, pretending to look at the price tags on the frozen fish. "Are you trying to get rid of him, or what?"
"Let's see who it is first," Rosen said. "Having been in America for so long, I always feel like someone's watching me."
Hearing Rosen's words, Guan Yuming was quite surprised. What trouble had this guy gotten into here? Why was someone monitoring him?
"Leave through the back door of the supermarket, and once he catches up, we'll corner him in the alley behind it."
Rosen nodded, put down the cart, and walked straight to the back door of the supermarket.
When he pushed open the green tin door, a hot, dusty wind rushed out and hit him.
He stopped at the doorway, turned sideways and leaned against the wall, waiting for the people behind him to catch up.
Sure enough, not long after, the back door was pushed open a crack, and a tall, thin Asian youth came out. His baseball cap was pulled low, the brim covering most of his face, revealing only his chin and a section of his jawline.
He saw Rosen standing at the door, paused noticeably, then lowered his head, muttered something under his breath, and turned to walk back.
But Guan Yuming was already standing behind him, blocking his way out.
Guan Yuming said casually, "Friend, what's your purpose in following my friend?"
In his view, this was just a novice who could fall into such an obvious trap.
The man's baseball cap was still pulled low, and he didn't even look up: "I've gone the wrong way, could you please let me pass? My things are still in the supermarket."
His tone was very natural, as if he were stating something very ordinary. After he finished speaking, he took a step forward, as if he intended to squeeze past Guan Yuming.
Guan Yuming chuckled and reached out to stop him: "You were following him in the supermarket, staring at him for over ten minutes."
Suddenly, the man shoved a palm at Guan Yuming's chin with such speed that it was like a rope being slapped away. Guan Yuming, who had been concentrating, took a step back and leaned back slightly. The palm missed its mark, grazing the tip of his collar.
Guan Yuming seized the man's arm and pulled him back, disrupting his balance. At the same time, he tripped, causing the man to lose his balance and fall face-first to the ground.
Rosen took a big step forward, bent down, pressed his knee against the man's back, concentrated his body weight on one point, and fixed the man completely to the ground.
His left hand pressed down on the man's wrist, and his right hand pressed down on his shoulder blade—a move he executed with exceptional practice. Rosen didn't go too far by pressing his knee against the man's neck, otherwise another unfortunate soul would have started to convulse.
