Chapter 49 Brother, wait until I grow the spinach
When it was time to finish work in the evening, Su Xingmian squatted at the edge of the field for a while, turning over the straw and pressing her palm against the freshly turned soil.
The demonic power seeped down into his palm.
The seed lay in the soil, its outer shell, infused with her demonic power, had swelled with tiny cracks, and its roots were probing downwards, three times faster than those of an ordinary seed.
Su Xingmian withdrew her demonic power, stood up, and patted the dirt off her knees.
We'll see in a few days!
When I pushed open the courtyard gate, the kitchen chimney was already puffing out smoke.
The clanging sound of iron woks hitting iron spatulas wafted out from inside, mingled with the aroma of scallions being stir-fried.
This has been the pattern for the past few days.
She spent the whole day out running around, and when she came back, the old fox had already cooked dinner.
Leave a note on the stove before leaving in the morning, and put hot dishes on the stove when you come back in the evening.
The enamel mug is always filled with hot water and placed within easy reach; the honey water in the thermos is changed and diluted every day.
I have to carefully apply clam oil to her every night.
Su Xingmian stood at the gate of the courtyard for two seconds, looking into the kitchen.
The old fox stood sideways in front of the stove, his military jacket off and draped over the back of the chair, his shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, holding a pot in his left hand and flipping a ladle with his right, his back ramrod straight.
The potato slices in the pan were flipped over, making a sizzling sound.
Su Xingmian stepped into the courtyard, and following her heart, ran straight over, wrapped her arms around his waist from behind, and pressed her face against his back.
She rubbed her face against the warm surface, the heat seeping in along her cheekbones, and the demonic energy within her meridians began to unfurl, like a flower bud slowly opening its petals after being warmed by the sun.
Zhou Bingheng paused for a moment while tossing the food in the pan.
"I'm back."
"Um."
His free hand covered her fingers that were resting on her waist and squeezed them.
"Your hands are so cold?"
He turned his palm over and pressed his thumb on the back of her hand to test the temperature.
"Tired?"
Su Xingmian shook her head and rubbed her face against his back again.
"I'm not tired. My sisters-in-law are very considerate of me. They didn't let me do much all morning. Xiao Zhao did the tilling and watering, and I just watched from the side."
The fire in the stove had gone down, Zhou Bingheng asked casually.
"Did Director Zhang go today?"
"I went and delivered two buckets of water."
Su Xingmian didn't let go, but moved to the side, holding his waist, to get closer to him.
"Uncle Wei also came and took a look around, squatting on the ground and observing for a long time."
"What did he say?"
"They said there was something special about the medicine used to soak the seeds, and asked me for the recipe."
"Did you give it to them?"
"Half was given."
Zhou Bingheng turned his head to look at her, and she looked up at him and winked.
"They didn't give us the core components; we'll talk about it after it's grown."
Zhou Bingheng didn't say anything, but pressed his thumb on the back of her hand and turned back to continue cooking.
Su Xingmian released his grip and went to squat down by the stove to add firewood.
She took two split pieces of firewood and stuffed them in; flames leaped up, illuminating the fire with a bright yellow light.
"elder brother."
"Um."
"I checked that batch of seeds today, and they seem to be fine; there shouldn't be any problems."
"Um."
"But my sisters-in-law said the temperature is going to drop in the next couple of days, and they're worried about frost."
She added another thin piece of firewood to the stove, her fingers warm from the fire.
"Uncle Wei also said that there will definitely be frost in Helan Mountain in mid-October. The first frost will be the worst, and if we can't withstand it, all our efforts will be in vain."
Zhou Bingheng scooped out the stir-fried potato slices and placed the spatula on the edge of the wok.
"Worried? I'll get you another batch of winter gear."
Su Xingmian shook her head.
"Don't worry, and you don't need to apply, it's just..."
She paused, her voice softening.
"So even if it doesn't actually grow, it's okay, right?"
Zhou Bingheng didn't stop chopping the scallions for the second dish.
Su Xingmian lay on the stove, the firelight warming half of her face, and her voice softened.
"You won't embarrass me, right?"
The sound of the knife hitting the cutting board paused for a moment.
A brief silence.
Zhou Bingheng scooped the scallions into the bowl, put down the knife, and picked up the rag next to him to wipe his hands.
"Dinner's ready, go wash your hands."
Su Xingmian chuckled and climbed up from the stove opening.
He changed the subject when the question hit the mark.
……
There were two dishes and a soup on the table.
Potato slices, stir-fried cabbage stalks, seaweed and egg drop soup.
Su Xingmian ate a couple of mouthfuls of rice, then picked up a piece of potato with her chopsticks, bit off half of it, and kept the other half in her mouth.
"elder brother."
Zhou Bingheng looked up.
She finished chewing the half-eaten potato she was holding and swallowed it, then tapped her chopsticks on the rim of the bowl.
"If my land really can't grow anything, will we only be able to eat pickled vegetables in the winter?"
Zhou Bingheng picked up a piece of cabbage stalk with his chopsticks and put it into her bowl.
"The logistics department has winter reserves."
"I know about the cabbages and radishes we store for winter, enough to last until next March, right?" Su Xingmian tilted her head. "Don't you get tired of eating cabbages and radishes every day?"
"Soldiers are not picky eaters."
Good grief, they're bringing up the ironclad rules of the military.
Su Xingmian wrinkled her nose, reached over with her chopsticks, and took a slice of potato from his bowl.
He didn't stop him.
"What if I told you I could definitely grow it?"
Zhou Bingheng took a sip of soup and put the bowl back on the table.
"Then let's wait for it to grow."
"What do you want to eat for the first meal after you grow it?"
"I'll eat whatever you grow."
Su Xingmian rested her chin on her hand, pointing her chopsticks at him: "Then I'll put it in your lunchbox, and you can bring your own lunch every day, okay?"
Zhou Bingheng glanced at her.
"So confident?"
"Of course," Su Xingmian said confidently. "The method my grandmother taught me has never failed."
She spoke with such confidence, after all, with demonic power as her foundation, she could bring plants back to life, something others couldn't do.
She picked up another piece of potato, but this time she didn't eat it directly; instead, she held it up to him.
"Brother, open your mouth."
Zhou Bingheng looked at the potato, then at her.
"You eat it yourself."
"I've eaten a lot." She waved her chopsticks. "You cook for me every day, is it wrong for me to feed you now?"
Zhou Bingheng lowered his head and took the potato away.
Su Xingmian's eyes curved into crescent moons.
She continued eating, and when she reached the bottom of the bowl, she suddenly said something.
"Brother, when my spinach grows, I'll fill your lunchbox to the brim."
"Every day at noon, someone will deliver vegetables to the regimental headquarters so that everyone in the regiment knows that the political commissar's wife has grown fresh vegetables."
Zhou Bingheng put down his chopsticks and picked up a handkerchief to wipe the corner of his mouth.
"Leave the dishes, I'll wash them."
"You're not answering me."
"Answered."
Su Xingmian was taken aback: "When?"
"I'll eat whatever you grow." He took away the empty bowl in front of her and tapped the table with his knuckles. "That's my answer."
Su Xingmian watched his back as he carried the bowl into the kitchen. He wasn't wearing his military jacket, and his shirt was tucked into his belt, revealing his broad shoulders and narrow waist.
She leaned on the table, crossed her arms as a pillow, and curled the corners of her mouth up.
The safety net for vegetable purchases will be increased by 30%.
The old fox avoided the topic, and she didn't intend to expose him.
Once the vegetables are grown, she will stuff Zhou's lunchbox until the lid can't be closed anymore.
The fifth day after the seeds were planted in the soil.
Su Xingmian was fast asleep in bed when she heard a loud banging on the courtyard gate.
Zhang Cuihua's loud voice came from across the courtyard gate.
"Girl, get up quickly! There was a huge frost today, the vegetable garden is ruined."
