The Overlord Flower's Guide to Intercepting a Woman's Wife's Death and the Male Lead&
Chapter 30: Sister-in-law's body temperature is 34 degrees Celsius, yet she is alive and kickin
The cavalry company set up camp in a leeward ravine.
Three tents, two iron pots, and horses tethered in a sheltered spot chewing dry hay.
He Yaozu was tied up and thrown into the farthest tent, where two soldiers stood guard with their guns.
Zhou Bingwen squatted in the tent, his first-aid kit spread out on the ground, and pulled out iodine and a suture pack.
"Second brother, stick your arm out."
Zhou Bingheng handed over his left arm, but his right hand remained still on the back of Su Xingmian's head.
The person in his arms hadn't let go since they started holding him, curled up into a small ball, with two fingers tightly hooked around the hem of his clothes, breathing heavily.
Zhou Bingwen cut open the cuff, wiped it with an iodine-soaked cotton ball, and the muscle at the edge of the wound twitched.
The bullet grazed the flesh, leaving a three-centimeter-long gash. It wasn't deep, but a lot of blood seeped out.
"Does it hurt?"
"Take care of yours."
Zhou Bingwen pursed his lips, but his hands moved swiftly, disinfecting, cleaning, and suturing in one go.
When they were sewing the third stitch, Su Xingmian's fingers twitched, and she clenched them tighter, snuggling closer into Zhou Bingheng's arms.
Zhou Bingheng gently patted her back twice with his right hand.
Zhou Bingwen cut the thread, tied a knot, and wrapped the gauze around it three times.
"Okay, don't get it wet for three days, and don't exert yourself."
He carefully put away the suture kit and then took out the stethoscope.
"Put your second sister-in-law down, I need to check on her condition."
"I can't let go."
Zhou Bingwen glanced at the ten fingers tucked into the hem of her clothes, reached out and pried them off. The sleeping girl had a stronger grip than he, a grown man.
He decided not to think about it too much.
"Then I'll check it like this."
The thermometer was placed under Su Xingmian's armpit, the blood pressure cuff was tied to her left arm, and the stethoscope was placed against her back.
Three minutes later, Zhou Bingwen took out the thermometer and looked at it in the light at the tent entrance.
Thirty-four degrees.
He frowned, shook the mercury column, put it back in, waited three minutes, pulled it out, held it up to the light, and examined it. The numbers were exactly the same.
He took the stethoscope off and put it on, then took it off again, checking it three times in total.
"Second Brother."
He lowered his voice, trying to keep it steady.
"Second Sister-in-law's body temperature is 34 degrees Celsius, which is below the lower limit of normal human temperature."
"Pulse rate of 42 beats per minute, sinus bradycardia."
"Your blood pressure is low."
He paused for a moment.
"According to all the textbooks I've studied, this set of data, when put together, points to the conclusion of near-death."
Zhou Bingheng did not respond.
"But her breathing was steady, she had no cyanosis, all her nerve reflexes were present, her capillary refill time was normal, and her skin had no frostbite."
Zhou Bingwen's speech became faster and faster.
"This is wrong. This set of data is incorrect for any living person."
He looked up.
"Second brother, do you know something?"
The wind outside the tent rustled the gravel, and inside the tent, only Su Xingmian's long, drawn-out breathing could be heard.
Zhou Bingheng looked down at the person in his arms. She was sleeping soundly, her eyelashes fluttering occasionally.
"She has a special constitution; she must have been like this when Grandma Su was alive."
Zhou Bingwen opened his mouth.
"Grandma Su is truly an extraordinary woman."
He sat on the ground and rubbed his temples.
"It's a pity that among the three brothers, only you have ever seen her."
He sighed and began to trace back the events.
"I saw my second sister-in-law use the Su-style acupuncture technique to force the shrapnel out of my grandfather's leg. Nine silver needles, and two pieces of shrapnel came out from under his skin on their own. I still don't understand how it works."
"In the cellar, two girls on the verge of death were saved by Su's acupuncture technique and a few traditional Chinese medicine pills. When Liu Xiaomai told me this, I thought she was making up a story."
As he spoke, his brows suddenly furrowed.
"Oh, right, second brother, there's another strange thing."
"One of those human traffickers had a large area of ulceration on the web of his right hand, with liquefied and necrotic tissue, so rotten it looked like the decay was spreading from the inside out."
Zhou Bingwen frowned and gestured.
"My first thought was a severe infection, but it wasn't contagious. The wound edges were neat, so it wasn't caused by bacteria or a virus."
He shook his head.
"It's more like some substance damaging localized tissue from the inside. I've never seen this kind of condition before."
The tent was quiet for a few seconds.
Zhou Bingheng didn't say anything. He placed his hand on the back of Su Xingmian's head and gently rubbed his thumb through her hair. The movement was very light and slow.
"Don't make a fuss yet."
Zhou Bingwen rolled his eyes.
"I'm a doctor, not a loudspeaker."
"But I'll need to have a full medical check-up when I get back."
"No rush."
"What do you mean 'not in a hurry'? Your wife's data is all abnormal; don't you want to figure it out?"
Zhou Bingheng's hand on the top of her head didn't stop.
"Grandma Su's medical skills are so advanced that even the government can't get her to come. When we try to measure the children she taught, we can't find anything."
Zhou Bingwen closed his mouth.
That was a huge amount of information. He sat there for a while, processing it, before finally managing to utter a single sentence.
"Fine, you're the old fox, you call the shots."
"But I'll keep an eye on her health; don't stop me."
"I didn't stop you."
Zhou Bingheng paused.
"I'm just reminding you that there are some things you should pretend you didn't see, even if you do. It wasn't easy for her to come all the way here from the countryside alone."
Zhou Bingwen recalled the day he first met this girl in the capital, the fifteen meters he chased after her on the train but failed to catch up, and Liu Xiaomai crying as she said she would stay at the very back.
"I know."
Just as he was about to say something more, the atmosphere in the tent changed.
Su Xingmian moved.
She turned over in her half-awake state, arching her body further against Zhou Bingheng's chest.
Her fingers loosened from the hem of his shirt, climbed up his waistline, and grabbed the second button on his chest.
He nuzzled his head against the crook of his collarbone a couple of times, finding the perfect angle, and then stopped.
Zhou Bingwen witnessed this scene firsthand, and his teeth ached.
"I'm going out."
He stood up, picked up his medical kit, and lifted the tent flap without turning his head.
He took three steps, then turned back and poked half his head in.
"Second brother, your arm is injured, don't move around."
Zhou Bingheng hummed in agreement.
Zhou Bingwen is gone.
The tent fell silent.
Outside, Liang Jin was yelling at the soldiers to chop wood and start a fire, and the sound of iron pots clattering could be heard from afar.
Su Xingmian nestled in his arms, the merit within her still circulating, seeping outwards from the depths of the flower bud, nourishing every parched meridian.
She didn't know what she was doing.
Her body's instincts drove her to move closer to the heat source, to seek out the warmest place.
The fingers that were gripping the button loosened and slipped inside the shirt, touching the thin cotton fabric beneath.
Zhou Bingheng's Adam's apple bobbed.
He reached out and pulled the restless paw out, held it in his palm, and tucked it back under his military overcoat.
He couldn't even hold on for three seconds.
That hand came out again, ten icy fingers wrapped around his entire hand and pressed it against his face.
Zhou Bingheng did not move again.
Sunlight streamed through the gaps in the canvas, falling on her hair.
Something flashed between the strands of hair.
The green, fine particles traveled less than half an inch from the roots of the hair before disappearing.
The time difference is no more than half a second.
Immediately afterwards, a delicate fragrance emanated from her.
It wasn't cosmetics, nor was it plant fragrance; it was a rich floral scent that shouldn't be present on human bodies.
Zhou Bingheng's heart skipped a beat.
He gritted his teeth, freed his other hand, and pulled up the collar of his military overcoat, wrapping himself and his head inside, leaving only the top of his head showing.
The floral fragrance was trapped inside the thick cotton fabric and faded.
He poked Su Xingmian's cheek with the pad of his index finger.
It's soft; your fingertip sinks in a small dent, and it slowly bounces back when you let go, very slowly.
He poked it again.
Su Xingmian snorted, tilted her head, and dodged away.
His finger followed.
The third time.
Su Xingmian didn't dodge. She grabbed his fingers, hugged him with her whole arm, rubbed her cheek against his, and mumbled out a single word.
"warm……"
Zhou Bingheng placed his hand on her face.
"Little liar."
The sound was very soft and was drowned out by the wind outside the tent.
Su Xingmian turned over, holding his hand, and buried her face in his palm, her breathing becoming long and even again.
Zhou Bingheng did not withdraw his hand.
His palm touched her cheek, and a surge of intense heat welled up inside her, much hotter than his own body temperature.
His fingers were slightly tense.
Just when he thought something had happened to her, the fever quickly subsided, and her body temperature returned to a stable level.
It's one degree higher than before.
Thirty-five degrees.
