The Overlord Flower's Guide to Intercepting a Woman's Wife's Death and the Male Lead&
Chapter 106 The old man slapped his thigh and recognized his goddaughter on the spot.
The jeep turned into a government compound surrounded by red brick walls.
Su Xingmian glanced at the sentry at the door through the car window and got a general idea of what was going on.
After the car came to a stop, Xiao Zhang ran out and opened the car door.
Zhou Bingheng got out of the car first, then turned around and reached out his hand to her.
Su Xingmian put her hand on it and jumped down.
She squeezed Zhou Bingheng's fingers.
This person brought her here to find a powerful backer.
A person was standing at the entrance of the courtyard.
The old man, leaning on a black wooden cane, stood ramrod straight.
Xiao Zhenshan.
The old man's gaze passed over Zhou Bingheng and landed directly on Su Xingmian.
He stared for a full three seconds, then his cane paused on the ground.
"This is Yuanzhen's granddaughter?"
Zhou Bingheng nodded and took Su Xingmian half a step forward.
"Grandpa Xiao." She released his hand and stepped forward.
Xiao Zhenshan's eyes instantly reddened, but he stubbornly maintained his composure.
"Shorter than Yuanzhen, but with bigger eyes. You're just too thin. Did Zhou Bingheng not feed you enough?"
Zhou Bingheng lagged half a step behind, his tone indifferent.
"It's being fed."
"You're still so thin even after being fed?" Xiao Zhenshan's cane paused again. "Is your Zhou guy eating poorly or something?"
He blew his beard and glared, "Such a pretty little girl, you're really lucky to have her."
Zhou Bingheng let him speak, standing silently beside Su Xingmian.
Before the words were finished, a figure shot out of the main room like a cannonball.
A young woman in military uniform with short, ear-length hair ran up to Su Xingmian and braked suddenly, causing the wind to rustle Su Xingmian's clothes.
"Oh my god."
The girl stared wide-eyed, looking Su Xingmian up and down, her mouth opening and closing repeatedly before finally managing to utter a single sentence.
"She's so beautiful! Zhou Bingheng, you old fox, where did you snatch this fairy from?"
Xiao Zhenshan tapped the ground with his cane.
"Xiao Jin, were you born in the Year of the Monkey? You're never serious!"
The girl named Xiao Jin completely ignored her grandfather, circled around Su Xingmian for a short while, reached out to pinch her face, but then pulled back abruptly, afraid of hurting the fairy.
"You're Su Xingmian? My grandpa's been talking about you so much I'm sick of it!"
Su Xingmian was a little confused by her overly familiar enthusiasm and moved closer to Zhou Bingheng.
Zhou Bingheng reached out and supported her lower back, introducing her casually.
"Xiao Jin, the youngest daughter of Uncle Xiao's family, is twenty-four years old this year and has just graduated from military academy."
Xiao Jin immediately puffed out her chest, looking proud.
"That's right! Second place in shooting at military academy!"
Su Xingmian was amused by her and couldn't help but ask, "Who came in first place?"
"A big, burly man from Northeast China who's half a head taller than me. I'm not convinced, but I can't beat him," Xiao Jin said confidently.
Su Xingmian couldn't help but burst out laughing.
Xiao Jin was stunned for a moment, clutching her chest and gasping for breath.
"Oh no, Zhou Bingheng, I feel like I've been dumped. If I were a guy, I'd fight you to the death for her. What incredible luck did you have to marry her?"
Zhou Bingheng ignored her and stepped aside to protect Su Xingmian as they entered the room.
There were already quite a few people sitting in the main living room.
Xiao Zhenshan's wife, Grandma Xiao, sat in the main seat. Her hair was completely white, but she was in good spirits and held a red envelope in her hand.
Xiao Mingyuan, the eldest son of the Xiao family, sat on the left. He was in his forties, wore glasses, and had a kind face.
His wife sat next to him, pouring water from a teapot into a cup.
As soon as Su Xingmian stepped across the threshold, all eyes turned to her.
There was a two-second silence.
Grandma Xiao spoke first, her voice trembling slightly.
"Oh dear, come here quickly, child..."
She placed the red envelope on her lap and beckoned Su Xingmian over.
Su Xingmian walked up to her, and the old lady grabbed her hand.
"Why are your hands so cold?" Grandma Xiao frowned, then turned to Zhou Bingheng and demanded, "Bingheng, don't you heat your kang (heated brick bed) in winter?"
"She has a special constitution; her body temperature is lower than that of ordinary people."
Zhou Bingheng gave a simple explanation.
"Then you need to take even better care of her!"
Grandma Xiao held Su Xingmian's two hands in her own hands and rubbed them together.
"Quick, bring me my hand warmer!"
"You can only treat patients once you've recovered. You can't be as stubborn as your grandmother was back then, insisting on giving acupuncture to the wounded even when her fingers were frozen red in the dead of winter."
Su Xingmian listened quietly, hearing about another side of her grandmother that she had never been a part of.
Xiao Zhenshan limped into the house, sat down on a chair next to the main seat, and rested his crutch on his knees.
"Alright, now that I've met the person, I'll cut to the chase."
The old man glanced at Zhou Bingheng, then at Su Xingmian.
"Girl, my life was snatched back from the jaws of death by your grandmother."
During the Huaihai Campaign in 1948, even the doctors in the field hospitals gave up. It was your grandmother who pulled me back from the brink of death with acupuncture and saved my leg.
He patted his right leg.
"I, Xiao Zhenshan, owe her a debt I can never repay in this lifetime."
Xiao Zhenshan paused.
"I want to adopt you as my goddaughter. I'll adopt you under my eldest son Xiao Mingyuan's name, and you'll be the youngest daughter in the Xiao family. Are you willing?"
Su Xingmian did not answer immediately.
She looked at Zhou Bingheng.
Zhou Bingheng remained seated, making no gesture whatsoever.
He doesn't make decisions for her.
But he brought her here.
Su Xingmian turned around and met Xiao Zhenshan's eyes, which were full of expectation and determination.
Everyone in the room held their breath.
"Grandpa Xiao, I promise."
She spoke slowly, with a soft, gentle tone at the end of her sentences.
The room was instantly filled with joy, and Grandma Xiao smiled as she tried to hand over the red envelope.
Su Xingmian added another sentence slowly and deliberately.
"But I have one condition."
