Death Train: SSS-level talent right from the start!
Chapter 8 [The Corpse Capital] Witnessing Death
The crowd instantly descended into chaos. Some screamed and ran forward, some were so frightened that their legs went weak and they collapsed to the ground, and some instinctively pushed into the middle of the crowd, using others as shields.
The monster gave no one time to react.
With its legs slightly bent, it suddenly lunged at the nearest target, a girl who was slumped on the ground.
The girl didn't even see the monster rushing towards her; she only heard a scream, looked up, and then saw a huge mouth full of yellow teeth rapidly enlarging in her field of vision.
Her pupils contracted sharply, and her mouth opened, but fear had completely silenced her; she couldn't utter a sound.
puff!
Blood splattered everywhere as the monster bit into the girl's neck.
"Get out of the way!"
Zhao Hai burst out from the side.
His right fist was completely metallic, his right arm was pulled back, and his whole body looked like a fully drawn bow.
The monster opened its jaws and lunged at Zhao Hai.
Zhao Hai did not dodge.
He threw out his right fist, the fist whistling through the air, and slammed it solidly into the monster's chest.
"boom--!"
The sound didn't resemble the collision of flesh and fists; it sounded more like a hammer slamming into a wooden door.
The monster's body flew backward five or six meters as if it had been hit by a car, crashed heavily to the ground, and rolled twice before coming to a stop.
Its chest was sunken in the shape of a fist, and its gray skin was cracked in several places, oozing black liquid.
The monster struggled on the ground for a moment, then crawled up in a contorted position, its all-black eyes fixed on Zhao Hai, its mouth opening and closing, making a "crackling" sound.
"Still not dead?"
Zhao Hai frowned, his fists simultaneously turning metal as he charged towards the monster.
The monster did not engage in battle this time.
It glanced at Zhao Hai, then turned and ran, faster than it had come, disappearing into the gray mist in a few breaths.
"It got away?" Zhao Hai stopped and stared in disbelief in the direction the monster had disappeared. "It just got away?"
"Hai-ge! You're awesome!"
"Sent the monster flying with one punch!"
"An S-rank talent is truly an S-rank talent, it's too powerful!"
"Brother Hai! Brother Hai!"
Cheers erupted from the crowd, and the fear they had felt earlier was largely dispelled by Zhao Hai's punch.
Zhao Hai stood still, the metallic sheen on his fists slowly fading, his expression changing from the coldness of battle to the smugness of being praised.
He turned around, his gaze sweeping over the cheering classmates before finally settling on Li Jiahao, and he slightly raised his chin.
The meaning couldn't be clearer, you see? That's power.
Li Jiahao stood on the other side of the crowd, his signature smile on his face, looking neither afraid nor excited.
"Xiaowei, Xiaowei, don't die!"
Suddenly, a girl's crying drew everyone's attention again.
Chen Ye also looked over. The two girls were twins from their class. The one who was bitten was the younger sister, Zhang Xiaowei, and the one holding Zhang Xiaowei was the older sister, Zhang Xiaojie.
Blood trickled down Zhang Xiaowei's neck, staining her light-colored pajamas with a large patch of dark red.
Zhang Xiaojie knelt on the ground, her hands tightly covering the wound on her sister's neck, but blood kept gushing out from between her fingers and could not be stopped.
Her palms were already stained red, but she was still pressing down hard, as if pressing hard enough could save her sister's life.
"Xiaowei, look at me, look at me! It's okay, it's okay, everything will be alright!"
Zhang Xiaojie's voice trembled, and large tears streamed down her face.
Zhang Xiaowei lay in her sister's arms, her face turning white at a visible speed, her lips changing from light pink to grayish-white, and then to an almost transparent bluish-purple.
Her eyes were half-open, her pupils were beginning to dilate, but she had not completely lost consciousness.
She looked at her sister's face, her lips moved slightly, and she made a very faint sound.
"Sister...Sister..."
"I'm here, I'm here! My sister's here!"
Zhang Xiaojie pressed her ear to her sister's mouth, tears mingling with blood, dripping onto Zhang Xiaowei's face.
"I...don't want...to die..."
The four words, spoken intermittently, seemed to come from the last ounce of strength in his body.
Zhang Xiaojie's lips trembled violently. She opened her mouth as if to say something, but couldn't utter a single word.
Because she saw her sister's eyes.
Those eyes, which once looked exactly like hers, are now slowly losing their luster.
Zhang Xiaowei's lips moved again, but this time no sound came out.
Her fingers curled slightly, as if trying to grasp something, and then the last taut string snapped completely.
Her head tilted limply to one side, her eyes were still open, but she could no longer see anything.
"Xiaowei? Xiaowei!"
Zhang Xiaojie's voice suddenly rose as she frantically shook her younger sister in her arms.
But Zhang Xiaowei's body was like a piece of lifeless wood, swaying with her movements without any response.
"Xiaowei! Wake up! Don't scare your sister! Wake up!"
A piercing cry tore through the gray fog, like a dull knife sawing back and forth across everyone's heart.
Zhao Hai stood still, the metallic sheen on his fists completely gone.
He watched Zhang Xiaojie weeping as she held her sister's body, her mouth opening and closing as if she wanted to say something, but didn't know what to say.
His two henchmen stood behind him, their expressions almost identical.
Li Jiahao also stopped smiling, and his brows furrowed slightly.
Zhou Yating's eyes reddened, and she bit her lip, trying hard not to cry.
Zhao Ruoxi covered her mouth, her face filled with terror.
Lin Shuyao and Fang Yuan's faces were also deathly pale.
Chen Ye stood in the crowd, watching Zhang Xiaojie holding her sister's body. In just half an hour, he witnessed two vibrant lives disappear.
It wasn't a death depicted in a TV drama, nor a death reported in the news; it was a death he witnessed firsthand.
Qin Zhaoyang stood beside him, completely frozen, his lips trembling as he managed to squeeze out, "She...she's really dead?"
Chen Ye did not answer.
"Why didn't you act sooner!"
Zhang Xiaojie's voice suddenly changed from crying to roaring.
She suddenly raised her head, her bloodshot eyes fixed on Zhao Hai, her gaze filled with hatred, resentment, and a kind of almost insane rage.
"Why didn't you act sooner! If you had acted sooner, Xiaowei wouldn't have died! You clearly have such great talent, you could have saved her!"
She stood up from the ground, staggered a bit, but still stood up straight, staring intently at Zhao Hai with her red and swollen eyes from crying.
"You saw her get bitten, right? You saw the monster pounce, right? Why didn't you rush in immediately? Did you do it on purpose?"
