Chapter 69 [The Mysterious City] Jiang Ning's Coldness
Jiang Ning didn't chase after her; he just glanced at Jian Lan.
Jian Lan moved, though her speed wasn't very fast, but Sun Yang's speed was even slower.
Her movement was clean and swift, and she kicked Sun Yang in the back of the knee.
Sun Yang lost his balance and fell to his knees with a thud.
Jian Lan grabbed his right arm and twisted it in the opposite direction.
The bones made a teeth-grinding creaking sound as Sun Yang's wrist was twisted behind his back, his entire arm feeling as if it were locked up.
"ah--!"
Sun Yang's screams echoed across the empty square.
Jian Lan pressed his face to the ground and knelt down on his back, rendering him unable to move.
Jiang Ning walked over, squatted down, and looked at Sun Yang's face.
"If you don't cooperate, I don't mind breaking all four of your limbs and throwing you in there. You won't even be able to crawl, let alone run away."
Jiang Ning spoke calmly, but his eyes were cold, a cold indifference to life.
In Jiang Ning's eyes, people without strength are all people who can be sacrificed.
Sun Yang's pupils contracted to pinpoints. His lips trembled violently, but this time he didn't say "I won't go." Going meant there was still hope of survival; not going meant certain death.
Jian Lan released her grip, stood up from the ground, and walked back behind Jiang Ning.
Sun Yang lay sprawled on the ground, looking like a lump of mud.
It took him several seconds to get up from the ground, his right arm hanging at his side, his wrist swollen.
Those who weren't chosen breathed a long sigh of relief, as if they had just narrowly escaped death.
Chen Ye remained leaning against the lamppost, his hands in his pockets, his expression unchanged.
He knew perfectly well that Jiang Ning was doing something everyone wanted to do but no one was willing to talk about: exchanging the fewest lives for the most survival information. This was the logic of the apocalypse—cruel but effective.
The plan to scout ahead was settled.
Chen Ye glanced at the three people who had been chosen.
Gao Li stood there, still clutching the steel bar in her hand, her expression a complex mix of fear and shame.
Lu Chen leaned against the base of the statue, his head down, the brim of his hat covering most of his face, making his expression unreadable.
Sun Yang stood at the very edge, rubbing his right arm.
Which building should we choose?
Jiang Ning turned around and her gaze fell on Chen Ye.
All eyes turned to Chen Ye.
"Any building with its doors closed will do." Chen Ye looked up at the sky. "But there's no rush. It's only just dawn, and there's still a long time before it gets dark. Let them rest and have something to eat."
Jiang Ning looked at him, her lips twitching slightly, but she didn't refute him.
He turned around and walked back to his own group.
The other survivors also found places to sit or lie down.
Someone was leaning against the edge of the flower bed.
Someone is leaning against the base of the statue.
Some people lay directly on the ground with their arms behind their heads.
After a whole night of fighting, everyone was at their limit, their bodies and minds like wrung-out sponges.
Time passed silently, second by second.
The grayish-white light slowly changed its brightness, from the grayish-white of dawn to the bright white of midday, and then from the bright white to the blazing white of midday.
The sun never appeared.
The sky was just an endless expanse of gray-white, like a giant white sheet covering the entire city.
Around noon, someone took out food and water from the storage space.
Chen Ye's team of six formed a small circle.
Zhou Yating took out several packets of compressed biscuits and several bottles of water from her storage space and threw them to the others one by one.
"Compressed biscuits, bottled water, the standard deluxe meal for the apocalypse." Qin Zhaoyang tore open a pack of biscuits, took a bite, chewed a couple of times, and his expression became subtle: "I really miss the school cafeteria."
Wang Shuo picked up a bottle of mineral water, unscrewed the cap, took a big gulp, and then wiped his mouth with his sleeve: "You're lucky to have anything to eat, and you're still being picky."
Li Zheng said while chewing on compressed biscuits, "I hope those houses with closed doors aren't dangerous, otherwise we're really doomed. This is only a one-and-a-half-level survival trial; I don't even want to think about the dangers that follow."
Wang Shuo gave a wry smile: "I don't even know if I'll survive this time, how can I be thinking about the future?"
The six of them sat by the flower bed, eating cookies, drinking water, and occasionally exchanging a few jokes.
The other survivors are also resting.
Some people leaned against the base of the statue, closing their eyes to rest; some squatted on the edge of the flower bed, eating dry rations; some wiped the stains off their weapons with torn clothes; and some stared blankly at the gray sky.
On the other side of the square, Jiang Ning stood up and shouted at the three Koreans, "You three, come here and get ready to work."
Goryeo's body stiffened visibly, and his fingers clenched tightly on the steel bars.
Lu Chen stood up from the base of the statue and walked towards Jiang Ning.
Sun Yang didn't move. He squatted on the edge of the flower bed, like a tree that had taken root.
Jian Lan stepped out from behind Jiang Ning and glanced in Sun Yang's direction.
Sun Yang cursed under his breath, then stood up and walked towards Jiang Ning.
"Hai-ge, let's go over there too."
Chen Ye stood up from the edge of the flower bed and walked towards Jiang Ning.
Zhao Hai followed behind him.
Others followed one after another.
When Chen Ye walked up to Jiang Ning, Wang Ze, Xia Yan, and Gu Qinghuan also came over.
The three chosen people stood in front of Jiang Ning.
Gao Li, Lu Chen, and Sun Yang stood in a row.
Jiang Ning's gaze swept across their faces: "Once you're inside, send messages to the system chat group if you can. If you can't send messages, come out in ten minutes. Don't try anything funny. Tell us the truth about what's going on inside. If you don't come out in half an hour, I'll send someone else in."
Jiang Ning forced these three people to go in. If there hadn't been any danger inside the house, they might not have told him. He had to intimidate them.
Goryeo tightened his grip on the steel bar, the tip of which poked into the ground, leaving a small dent in the stone brick.
Sun Yang's body trembled slightly; he was genuinely afraid.
The only one who remained somewhat composed, Lu Chen, asked, "Should the three of us go into the same building, or should we each go into a separate building?"
This question surprised everyone present.
"What did you say?"
Jiang Ning looked at Chen Ye and Wang Ze.
Chen Ye pondered for a moment: "If one person enters one building and there is something inside, it makes no difference whether three people go in or one person goes in. If there is no danger in any of the three buildings, then we can basically conclude that we can enter any closed building in the city."
Jiang Ning glanced at Chen Ye but didn't say anything, which was considered tacit approval of the plan. If there was something truly capable, their three B-level talents wouldn't be enough to handle it.
Wang Ze nodded without saying anything.
Jiang Ning's gaze swept around the square.
The Victorian buildings surrounding the square cast pale shadows in the greyish-white light, and the houses with their doors closed stood quietly.
