Death Train: SSS-level talent right from the start!

Chapter 52 [The Mysterious City] The Eerie Empty City

Jiang Ning glanced at her but didn't say anything.

Goryeo continued, "B-grade talent [Polearm Mastery], level 2, base strength 7 points, deals double strength damage when using polearms. I've killed three Gray Mist Zombies in the Corpse Capital."

Jiang Ning was silent for two seconds, then nodded slightly. He didn't care about B-level talents, but Gao Li told them a lot of information about carriage number three and Zhao Hai's team.

Goryeo stood at the very back of the group. She needed a backer now, as all three of the men she had brought with her had died in the Corpse Capital.

Jiang Ning's gaze lingered on Chen Ye and Zhao Hai not far away for a moment, then moved away.

The crowd on the platform grew denser and denser.

"This place seems pretty normal."

"What's normal about this? This city is so big, and it's so quiet, it's like there's no one here. What's normal about it?"

"Quiet is a good thing. No monsters suddenly rushing out are much better than corpses."

"You're overthinking it. The difficulty level of Corpse City is one star, while the difficulty level here is one and a half stars. In Corpse City, you can survive until the end of the trial by just hiding. Here... it's probably not that simple."

The crowd began to chatter amongst themselves.

Some people were analyzing where the danger in the ghost city came from, some were talking about their experiences brought from the city of corpses, and some were inquiring about the situation in other carriages.

The sounds grew increasingly mixed and dense, like a pot of boiling porridge.

"Everyone, the situation is unclear right now. I have a suggestion: let's not split up, but stick together and look out for each other. Let's see what's going on outside first."

The speaker was a tall, thin boy wearing black-rimmed glasses.

He was followed by a girl with pigtails.

The crowd fell silent for a moment, and all eyes turned to him.

"It's Wang Ze, ranked third on the ranking list."

"He seems to have S-level talent as well."

Many people in the crowd recognized the tall, thin boy.

"I agree!"

"Yes, although there's no thick fog here and we haven't seen any monsters, it still feels a bit creepy. Let's not get separated."

"Wang Ze is right, let's see how things go."

A chorus of agreement rose and fell, mostly from those with low talent ratings and weak combat abilities.

They need to band together, they need someone to lead them, and they need even a nominal "unified action" to bolster their courage.

"Brother Ning, what do we do?"

Zhu Peng asked in a low voice.

"Keep an eye on Zhao Hai's group. Wherever they go, we'll go. It's time to settle the score with the Corpse Capital."

Jiang Ning's gaze remained fixed on Zhao Hai and Chen Ye, who were not far away. He didn't care how many points he got in this trial; what he cared about was making Zhao Hai and Chen Ye pay the price.

Zhao Hai stood beside Chen Ye and lowered his voice: "Chen Ye, should we follow the main group?"

Chen Ye's gaze swept across the platform, where 147 people were divided into countless small groups.

He searched around and spotted a black figure at the very edge of the crowd. Gu Qinghuan was leaning against a cast iron pillar on the platform, her hands in her pockets, her gaze fixed on Wang Ze, who had just suggested a unified action.

She didn't leave this time. Last time in the city of corpses, she left shortly after getting off the bus, but this time she didn't.

Chen Ye withdrew his gaze: "Let's follow the main group first and figure out the situation in Guidu before we talk about anything else."

Zhao Hai nodded.

The crowd began to move.

There was no one organizing it, but everyone was moving towards the platform exit.

One hundred and forty-seven people walked out of Guidu North Station in a grand procession and entered this somewhat eerie empty city.

Chen Ye walked in the middle of the group, Zhao Hai walked to his right, and Qin Zhaoyang followed behind carrying the Gale Crossbow.

Wang Shuo and Li Zheng flanked the flanks, while Zhou Yating walked in the middle of the group.

Outside the platform is a wide street.

The streetlights on both sides of the street were still on, their orange glow seeming somewhat superfluous against the gray-white skylight.

The lamppost is made of black cast iron, with intricate carvings on the base, resembling a product of some ancient craft.

In the distance are rows of Victorian villas.

Spires, arched windows, gables—each building has its own unique details, but the overall style is so unified that it seems to have been designed by the same architect.

There was no clutter on the street.

There was no trash, no gravel, no vehicles, not even a single fallen leaf.

The entire street was so clean it looked like someone was cleaning it every day, but there was no sign of any living people in the air.

"This place... is too quiet."

Qin Zhaoyang's voice was very low, but his wariness was evident in it.

"Indeed, there don't seem to be any monsters. That's really strange."

Zhou Yating's gaze swept over the surrounding houses.

"Since it's a survival trial, it won't be that simple. Be careful, there's definitely something in this city, we just haven't found it yet."

Chen Ye's voice came from the side.

Qin Zhaoyang's Adam's apple bobbed.

The group at the front of the line stopped; the procession halted at an intersection.

There's a small square ahead.

A statue stands in the center of the square.

The statue depicts a person dressed in Victorian-era clothing, whose head has been cut off by something, leaving only a jagged neck.

People gathered around the statue, chattering amongst themselves.

Along the way, the city seemed peaceful and undisturbed.

Wang Ze stood on the statue's base, looking at the crowd below: "This place should be safe for now. I suggest we split up and explore different areas of the city, then meet back here before dark."

Jiang Ning leaned against the edge of the statue's base, arms crossed over her chest: "Investigate what?"

Wang Ze pushed up his glasses: "Since this is a survival trial, this city certainly won't stay this quiet forever. If the danger isn't during the day, it must be at night. There's no harm in gathering some information now."

Chen Ye looked at the statue in front of him and said slowly, "I agree with Wang Ze's suggestion. Anyway, we have nothing to do now, so we can't just sit here and wait for it to get dark without doing anything."

Jiang Ning glanced at Chen Ye, a smile playing on her lips: "Then go look for it. If you find anything, just say so in the group chat."

"Then let's all go our separate ways. Let's meet back here at four o'clock this afternoon to discuss how to spend the night. If we encounter any danger, we can call for help in the group chat."

After Wang Ze finished speaking, he jumped off the statue's base and walked north, with the girl with pigtails quickly following him.

The remaining people began to disperse in different directions, like a group of dandelions scattered by the wind, drifting to every corner of this Victorian-style ghost town.

Some people followed Wang Ze, some traveled in twos and threes, and some, like Gu Qinghuan, left alone.

Chen Ye noticed that Jiang Ning's gaze followed Gu Qinghuan's back until she completely disappeared from sight, at which point the corners of her mouth turned up slightly.

"What's he so happy about?"

Zhao Hai also noticed the change in Jiang Ning's expression.
