Start in America, and receive three assassins every day.
Chapter 11 Renting a House
"Asian kid, don't be too ambitious. There are temporary dockworkers who have been working for more than ten years without becoming permanent employees. This is not an easy thing."
Upon hearing this, Chen An's expression darkened.
He hadn't expected it to be so difficult to become a full-time dock worker. If he had worked there for a few years, he would have thousands of henchmen under his command, and he wouldn't need to be a porter anymore.
It seems we need to think of another way.
Isn't this America? Real money can buy everything. He didn't believe there wasn't another way.
"But I can give them a raise," Jess said, changing the subject.
"Oh, how so?" Chen An asked.
"If you introduce me to six more strong and fit men like this, the hourly wage will increase to $20, which is $160 a day. How about that?"
Upon hearing this, Chen An nodded, "Okay."
"Of course, if you can refer others, in addition to benefits, your salary will also increase. This is a good deal."
Jess smiled.
"Don't worry, Grandpa Jess, I have plenty of men, but it will take some time."
Hearing Chen An's words, Jess smiled, turned around, got into his car, and left the dock.
Chen An watched this scene quietly. The fact that a foreman could possess such power fueled his desire to the extreme.
Now that he has the assassin system, he will never work again. He wants to experience the life of the American upper class.
"Brook, I'm entrusting my men to you."
Brooke said, "Don't worry, Anne. I'll take care of them and make sure they won't be bullied. And thanks to you, Grandpa Jess even gave me a raise."
Chen An then led Hank and Emily away from the dock.
"Hank, I'd like to rent a place. It doesn't have to be fancy, but it needs to be big enough to accommodate a lot of people. Do you have any?"
Hank is a resident of Los Angeles, so asking him is the most convenient option.
Upon hearing this, Hank looked thoughtful. "There seems to be such a place, which happens to be very close to the San Pedro Pier. However, there are often conflicts between the Bloods and the Cripps there, so it's very chaotic, but the rent is also very cheap."
Upon hearing this, Chen An's expression shifted: "Let's go take a look."
confusion.
He fears nothing more than chaos; on the contrary, he can develop better in chaos. If he had to choose between a peaceful area populated by wealthy people and an area frequented by gangsters, he would choose the latter without hesitation, because it would be more conducive to the performance of his assassins.
The wealthy neighborhood has its own private armed forces and patrols, and anything they do will attract the attention of the LAPD (Law and Police Department).
Soon Hank led them south towards the dock, to the edge of South Central City, where the surrounding environment had changed considerably.
Dilapidated cars were parked haphazardly on the street, the majority of the people on the road were Black, and the walls were covered with graffiti of various patterns, making it a clearly chaotic area.
"Chen An, this is the southern part of Los Angeles. There are houses for rent everywhere, but because most people in this area are poor and have limited money, very few houses can be rented out."
Hank explained.
"Let's find some rooms for rent here. The only requirement is that they have plenty of space."
Hearing Chen An's request, Hank nodded, "No problem, there really is something suitable here that meets your requirements."
"That place was originally an unfinished building, but later many homeless people moved in, so the wealthy people invested in converting some of the floors into residences for them to live in."
"Of course, there are better rooms, but those require rent."
Upon hearing this, Chen An looked puzzled. "Would those wealthy people be so kind as to fund the accommodation of these homeless people?"
Hank smiled. "Ann, you don't know, these rich people love doing good deeds. There are many shelters in Los Angeles that they run because donating money to charity can reduce their tax rate and give them a good reputation. Otherwise, those people wouldn't be so kind."
"So that's how it is." Chen An nodded, bewildered.
He had thought these wealthy businessmen had changed their ways, but it turned out they were just after something profitable. However, the unfinished building that Hank mentioned was indeed very suitable for him right now.
One can plant assassins inside the building, which can both avoid attracting attention and indirectly ensure one's own safety.
Hank soon led him to a ten-story building whose walls were covered with all sorts of graffiti.
There are also many houses for rent on the wall.
Seeing this, Chen An was about to take out his phone to dial the number on the screen when Hank stopped him, saying, "Boss, no need to call. I know someone there who can rent a place for a much lower price than this."
Hank then led him into the first floor of the building, to a room, and knocked on the door.
A short while later, the door was opened, and a black woman appeared before them, looking at Chen An and the others with a puzzled expression.
Who are you?
Hank smiled and said, "Mrs. Maya, we're here to rent a house. We heard that you have the most and best houses, so we came to inquire."
Upon hearing this, Mrs. Maya's initially confused expression instantly turned to delight. "So you want to rent an apartment. You've come to the right place. I have most of the good apartments in the building. What type are you looking for?"
Chen An said, "It should have a private bathroom, be spacious, and the room should ideally be free of any unpleasant odors."
Maya nodded upon hearing this. "Yes, there is, but the rent is a bit expensive. The previous owner was a technician at a large factory, but he injured his hand while using machinery and sold the house to me to pay for the exorbitant medical expenses. I saw him homeless on the street a while ago."
Mrs. Maya seemed unfazed and spoke very calmly.
Hank, however, felt a deep connection to the situation because he had been through the same thing. Medical costs in America are simply too high, and even if you have insurance, you might not get reimbursed.
This is why some people would rather take painkillers than see a doctor when they are in pain.
"Take us to see it. If we like it, we'll rent it."
Chen An said.
"Good sirs, and this lady, please follow me." Mrs. Maya turned and went inside to retrieve a set of keys, then headed upstairs.
They followed them all the way to the fifth floor, to the door of room 502.
As Mrs. Maya inserted the key into the doorknob and opened the door, the scene inside the house was revealed to everyone.
Upon entering, you'll find a living room that's neither too big nor too small. Although there's a slight odor in the air, it's far better than the previous apartment, at least tolerable.
It also has a kitchen, a separate bathroom, and a bedroom. It has good natural light and the surroundings are bright. This kind of house is considered pretty good here.
"How is it? Are you satisfied?" Mrs. Maya asked.
Chen An nodded, "Okay, but how much is the rent?"
He can't afford to rent it if it's too expensive. He only has a little over two thousand US dollars on him right now, and part of it is needed to buy guns and for daily use.
Mrs. Maya said, "It's $600 a month, one month's rent as deposit."
So cheap!?
Chen An had thought it would cost around a thousand US dollars, but it turned out to be less than he expected. Hank said there was a reason why the rent was low here.
"Could you make it a little cheaper? I plan to stay here long-term," Chen An tried to negotiate.
Upon hearing this, Mrs. Maya thought for a moment and said, "It's $550 a month, but let me make it clear from the start that there's a reason why it's so cheap here."
