Chapter 53 Exterminate All
The pursuers had just recovered from the shock of the "humph" incantation, their eardrums still ringing, when they saw two dark figures, one large and one small, rushing out of the forest at the end of the official road ahead.
Its black fur was like steel needles, its fangs protruded, and its eerie green eyes gleamed coldly in the moonlight. The male mandrill was in front, followed by the female, both on all fours, moving with incredible speed, like two black lightning bolts.
"What...what is that?!" a soldier exclaimed.
Before he could finish speaking, a tiger's roar suddenly came from behind him.
Everyone turned around abruptly—at the end of the city street, a striped tiger was rushing towards the city gate.
Its footsteps were heavy and rapid, each step causing a slight tremor in the ground, and the character "王" (king) on its forehead was clearly visible in the moonlight.
A mountain demon looms ahead, and a fierce tiger lurks behind.
The pursuers panicked, their steps faltering. Some raised their guns, some retreated, and some shouted.
The adjutant drew his pistol and fired a shot into the air: "Don't panic! We're armed! If these two bastards dare to come up, we'll riddle them with bullets!"
The soldiers calmed down a bit and raised their guns, aiming them at the mandrills charging towards them.
A soldier raised his gun, and just as the sights were on the tiger's forehead, a muffled gunshot rang out from the darkness.
"Bang!"
The soldier was shot between the eyebrows, his body fell backward, and the gun flew out of his hand and crashed to the ground.
"There's a gunman lurking in the shadows! Take cover! Take cover!"
"It's that person from the city wall just now!"
"He hasn't left yet!"
Panic spread instantly.
They were trapped at the city gate, with mandrills in front, tigers behind, and a sharpshooter with superb marksmanship lurking in the shadows—they had nowhere to hide, what difference was there between them and sitting ducks?
A soldier yelled at the top of his lungs, "There must only be one person on the other side, and they're running out of ammo! Otherwise, how could such incredible marksmanship only hit—"
"Bang!"
Before he could finish speaking, another shot rang out. A burst of blood erupted from the soldier's chest, and he staggered two steps before collapsing to the ground.
The soldiers were completely thrown into chaos. Their eyes searched the darkness, but they couldn't see anything.
Chen Hongwu's figure was hidden in the shadows on the side of the city wall. He only had seven bullets left in his Browning, and he couldn't afford to waste them.
Every shot must hit the most critical spot, the person most likely to demoralize the enemy.
The two mandrills had already charged close.
"Close the gate! Close the gate now!" the adjutant roared. "Keep the tiger and the gunman out of the city! Deal with these two beasts first!"
The soldiers frantically pulled up the city gate, and the heavy door panels closed, keeping the tiger and Chen Hongwu inside, but the mountain demon had already rushed in.
The mountain demon lunged at the nearest soldier and slapped him across the head as if he had been hit by a hammer. The man flew through the air, crashed into the door, and slid down softly.
The mother mountain demon followed closely behind, biting another soldier's shoulder and throwing him several feet away.
In their panic, the soldiers opened fire, bullets hitting the two mandrills and splattering blood.
The mandrills roared in pain, but the bullets were caught in their muscles and couldn't penetrate their bones or internal organs. They became even more ferocious, rampaging through the crowd, tearing and biting with their claws, their screams echoing across the city gate.
The adjutant fired several shots, the bullets striking the mandrill in the chest and leaving several bloody holes. The mandrill turned to look at him, then slapped him across the shoulder. The adjutant couldn't dodge in time and was hit in the shoulder, crashing into the wall with a shattered sternum, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth, before collapsing to the ground.
In less than the time it takes to drink half a cup of tea, more than a dozen soldiers were killed. Corpses lay scattered at the city gate, their blood staining the bluestone slabs a dark red.
The two mandrills were covered in blood, their bodies riddled with bullet holes from which black blood seeped. The female mandrill had a limp in her right leg, and the male mandrill had a dent in his left shoulder.
The tiger outside the city gate growled twice, stopped charging, and took a few steps back.
Chen Hongwu emerged from the shadows, pushed open the city gate, and mounted the tiger. He glanced at the corpses scattered on the ground, his gaze settling on the two mountain demons.
The mother mandrill howled at him, her voice filled with displeasure, as if to say—this is the last time. Don't bother us with this kind of trouble again.
Chen Hongwu nodded: "May our paths cross again someday."
The two mandrills shook their bodies, their muscles contracting and writhing, squeezing out the bullets embedded in their flesh one by one, which fell to the ground with a clattering sound.
The bleeding stopped, and the wound began to heal slowly. They turned and disappeared into the forest without looking back, their figures quickly vanishing into the darkness.
Chen Hongwu dismounted from the tiger and patted its head.
Tiger looked up at him, his amber eyes filled with confusion.
Chen Hongwu squatted down to be at eye level with the tiger.
"You should go too."
The tiger's ears twitched, and it let out a low growl.
Chen Hongwu stood up and patted its back. The tiger glanced at him again, then turned and ran off at an increasingly faster pace.
The city gate was quiet.
The night wind swept through the deserted streets, stirring up the blood and corpses on the ground. Chen Hongwu stood in the middle of the city gate, looking in the direction where Hu had disappeared, and remained silent for a moment.
Then he turned around and strode along the cart tracks on the official road outside the city.
He walked at a moderate pace, with even strides and steady steps.

The next morning.
Residents of Sanhai County cautiously pushed open the cracks in their doors and peeked out.
The streets were deserted; there were no police, no soldiers, no gunfire. The sunlight shone on the bluestone pavement, as bright and warm as ever.
Several brave men walked together to the city gate and saw corpses all over the ground and dark red bloodstains. They were so frightened that they almost sat down on the ground.
Someone ran to report it to the authorities, but the county government office was already empty.
Wang Yucheng and his son died, the captain of the police station also died, and even the foreign soldiers died at the city gate.
Sanhai County has lost its county magistrate, its police officers, and its soldiers.
But before long, everyone went back to doing what they were doing.
The sun rises and sets as usual, and the mundane tasks of daily life remain unchanged.
