Chapter 14 The Mandrill Attack
As night deepened, the campfire burned into a dark red pile of charcoal.
Around the camp, patrolling guards changed shifts every fifteen minutes, their footsteps light and alert.
Chen Hongwu leaned against that big tree, his eyes half-closed, his breathing long and even.
He didn't sleep.
If nothing unexpected happens, it will happen soon.
suddenly.
His hair stood on end, as if he were being stared at by some ferocious beast.
Those who practice martial arts must first cultivate alertness. If a wild beast is watching you from a distance, a chill will run down your spine. This is the sensation of qi and blood, an intuition that precedes the mind. At the level of internal strength (yinjin), this sensation becomes even more pronounced.
That's exactly how Chen Hongwu felt at that moment.
Without a second thought, he yanked his Browning rifle out of his waist and pulled the trigger in the direction his intuition told him.
"Bang!"
Gunfire illuminated the darkness.
The bullet hit something—a dark shadow darted out of the forest at incredible speed. The bullet struck it, splattering a spray of blood, but it only paused slightly, as if bitten by a mosquito, before continuing its attack on Chen Hongwu.
In the firelight, Chen Hongwu could see the other person's appearance clearly.
It is over three meters tall, covered in black hair, with arms that reach past its knees, protruding fangs, and a ferocious face.
It was that mandrill.
Its eyes glowed with an eerie green light in the darkness, staring intently at Chen Hongwu, as if it had identified him.
Chen Hongwu pushed off with his feet, propelling himself backward. At the same time, he let out a long, sharp whistle that exploded in the night sky.
"Enemy attack!"
The camp erupted in excitement.
The guards rolled out of the tent, some shirtless, some pulling up their trousers, but all of them clutching guns. Years of living on the edge had made them able to reach for their weapons even in their sleep.
Liu Kun was the first to arrive.
He had two Mauser pistols at his waist and a rifle in his hand, his eyes sweeping across the camp like a hawk's.
Upon seeing the mandrill, his expression changed, but he quickly regained his composure.
"Young Master, are you alright?" Liu Kun quickly walked to Chen Hongwu's side.
Chen Hongwu shook his head, his eyes fixed on the mandrill: "Be careful, bullets won't kill it."
The mandrill missed its target and didn't rush to attack again. Instead, it stood at the edge of the camp, tilting its head to observe the men with guns. It had a bloody hole in its body, left by Chen Hongwu's shot, but the bleeding had stopped.
Liu Kun sneered, "That beast is just unlucky. I wasn't home when it caused trouble at the Chen family's house last time. Now that it's caught in the crossfire, it'll never leave alive."
He raised his hand and then swung it down sharply.
"beat!"
More than twenty guns opened fire simultaneously.
"Da da da da!"
Bullets rained down on the mandrill.
This time, the mandrill did not fight back.
It flashed sideways, moving several feet with astonishing speed, like a black lightning bolt. Most of the bullets struck the tree trunk behind it, sending splinters flying.
Only two or three bullets hit its target, striking its shoulder, back, and arms, splattering blood.
But the mandrill just grinned, as if it had been hit by a stone, and continued to dodge.
"That beast knows how to hide!" one of the guards exclaimed.
"Keep firing! Don't stop!" Liu Kun roared, raising his rifle and aiming while holding his breath.
The mandrill darted left and right around the camp, its movements unpredictable.
It is fast and moves unpredictably; it looks like it's going to go left, but its body suddenly springs to the right.
Its hunting instincts allowed it to find the path with the smallest possible target area amidst a hail of bullets.
Liu Kun fired his gun.
A single shot struck the mandrill in the chest.
The mandrill swayed and looked down at the bullet hole in its chest. A patch of black fur was charred, and the flesh was torn open, but no blood gushed out; the muscles were tightly gripping the bullet.
It raised its head, grinned at Liu Kun, revealing a mouthful of fangs.
That expression looked like he was smiling.
This beast, has it become a spirit?
Liu Kun's face turned ashen.
"Reload! Keep firing!"
The guards frantically changed magazines and cocked their rifles. Taking advantage of the situation, the mandrill rushed forward a few more steps, now less than ten meters from the nearest guard.
"Da da da da!"
The second salvo.
This time the distance was closer, and the hit rate was higher. At least a dozen bullets hit the mandrill, which finally took half a step back, with more than a dozen bloody holes in its body.
But it still didn't fall.
When the bullet hits it, it's like hitting a lump of rubber. The bullet is trapped in the muscle and doesn't damage the bones or internal organs at all.
Chen Hongwu stood at the back of the crowd, his eyes fixed on the mandrill's movements.
Some ferocious beasts have thick skin, tough flesh, and strong bones.
Ordinary firearms cannot penetrate vital organs, so they cannot kill. In this situation, fists and feet are more effective than guns because they can penetrate and deliver force.
Of course, the premise is that one can achieve the hidden power to emerge.
The mandrill, after being shot twice, finally got angry.
It roared to the sky, its voice so loud it hurt the eardrums. Then it crouched down, got on all fours, and charged at the guard like a real wild beast.
It's faster than before.
"Fight! Fight! Fight!" Liu Kun shouted hoarsely.
The gunfire was as dense as popping beans.
But this time the mandrill didn't dodge; it charged forward, enduring the bullets. Bullets struck its body, splattering blood, but it didn't stop, like a runaway train.
"Click click click—"
The gunfire gradually subsided.
Some people emptied their magazines, and some got their guns jammed.
The mandrill had already charged right up to them.
"Ah—!" One of the guards didn't have time to reload and was slapped away by the mandrill. His chest caved in, and he coughed up blood in mid-air. He was already lifeless when he landed.
Another guard was grabbed by the head and crushed like a watermelon.
Screams, gunshots, and roars mingled together.
Liu Kun drew his pistol from his waist and fired both guns simultaneously, the bullets striking the mandrill in the face at close range. The mandrill closed its eyes; its face was broken in several places, but it still did not retreat.
A slap came, and Liu Kun couldn't dodge it in time. He was grazed on the shoulder and sent flying, crashing heavily into a tree and spitting out a mouthful of blood.
"Master Liu!" several guards exclaimed.
The mandrills continued their slaughter.
A tiger among sheep.
Killing chickens and slaughtering dogs.
Although the guards were all valiant men who had tasted blood, they were no match for this invulnerable monster. Some turned to run, but the mandrill caught up with them and ripped their backs open with a single claw.
The forest was filled with the stench of blood.
