Quick Transmigration: The Control Group in Sweet Novels

Chapter 66 Peasant Girl vs. Volunteer Teacher 1

The sun hangs in the sky, and Qingya Village, nestled against the mountains, blends into a lush green landscape.

It had rained a few days ago, and the mountain roads were full of potholes and covered with muddy water. The rugged paths branched off into several routes, and there weren't even any road signs in this rudimentary place.

Lin Huaixu stopped and stood alone at the crossroads, carrying a simple bag. The surrounding mountains and fields were completely deserted.

This was his first time visiting Qingya Village.

It was a difficult journey. He submitted his application just before graduation, volunteering to teach in this impoverished mountain village. When the teacher received his application, he simply gave him a deep look and asked if he had thought it through.

Lin Huaixu nodded and said gently, "Teacher, I've made up my mind."

He had traveled by train and bus, and finally followed the directions of passersby to find his way here. He was almost exhausted. Now, looking at the muddy road in front of him, the usually calm and gentle man showed a rare look of helplessness and confusion.

Having grown up in the city, this was his first time stepping into this secluded mountain. Everything around him was extremely unfamiliar, leaving Lin Huaixu in a dilemma, unsure of where to begin.

He raised his hand to wipe the fog off his glasses, but before he could properly assess the road conditions, a sudden commotion broke out in the quiet mountain road.

Lin Huaixu was taken aback. He put his glasses back on and looked over.

A tricycle gradually appeared at a fork in the road. The rider struggled to pedal on the muddy dirt road and soon stopped the wobbling tricycle in front of Lin Huaixu. He stopped the vehicle and then looked the young man up and down.

Lin Huaixu was in the mountains, still wearing a clean white shirt. His eyebrows and eyes were gentle and refined, and his silver-rimmed glasses made him look very scholarly.

After sizing him up for a moment, Qi Rongguang, speaking in a thick rural accent, said gruffly, "You must be the new teacher sent to our village from the city?"

Lin Huaixu instantly understood, his expression softening slightly. "Yes, hello, I am Lin Huaixu."

"Yes, yes, yes, his surname is Lin." Qi Rongguang slapped his thigh and laughed, revealing a set of yellow teeth. He quickly explained, "The village notified me in advance to pick you up at the village entrance today. But I've been busy harvesting crops these past few days, and I got so busy that I forgot the time. While I was working, I kept wondering if I had forgotten something, and then I remembered this. I'm really sorry to have kept you waiting here alone for so long."

Once a middle-aged man starts talking, he can't stop; he just keeps rambling on and on.

Lin Huaixu remained polite and gentle, "It's alright, I just arrived too."

Qi Rongguang immediately waved his hand, "Alright, Teacher Lin, you should get in the car now. I have a lot of things to do back in the fields!"

Lin Huaixu said "okay" and then turned around to walk around to the back of the tricycle.

This vehicle seems to be quite old; its metal frame is mottled and rusted, and the paint has completely peeled off, making it look exceptionally worn. In the muddy pit filled with puddles, the vehicle is tilted, as if it will lose its balance at any moment.

Lin Huaixu was taken aback, not because he disliked him, but because he hadn't noticed that there was another person sitting in the car.

A petite girl was crammed into the cramped truck bed.

The girl looked very young, and was extremely thin. She huddled quietly in the corner of the truck bed, not uttering a single word the entire time.

She met Lin Huaixu's gaze. Her face was covered with a layer of dust, making it impossible to see her features, but her eyes were exceptionally bright as she stared intently at Lin Huaixu in front of the car.

Lin Huaixu pursed his lips and said, "Brother, this road looks difficult to walk on, and the bike is hard to ride either. Why don't I help you push the bike from behind?"

Upon hearing this, Qi Rongguang casually spat towards the roadside and said impatiently, "Hurry up, hurry up. Don't worry, with your physique, I could drag ten of you without any trouble!"

Lin Huaixu had no choice but to get into the car.

The car swayed and then dropped a few more degrees.

Before he could even settle in, Qi Rongguang was already pedaling again, the old tricycle creaking and groaning as it swayed along the mountain road.

The truck bed was already cramped, and with two people squeezed inside, they inevitably ended up close together. Lin Huaixu tried his best to keep his distance, gripping the edge of the truck with his fingers and using all his strength.

The car bumped and swayed constantly in the mountains, tilting and shaking from time to time.

Lin Huaixu subconsciously pulled his leg back and looked at the girl who had remained silent. Seemingly afraid that she would feel awkward, he politely said, "Hello."

The man's voice was clear and pleasant, quite different from Qi Rongguang's rough and coarse tone.

Qi Yang looked up, her dark eyes exceptionally pure. She quietly looked at Lin Huaixu for two seconds, then nodded slightly.

Hearing this, Qi Rongguang, who was riding ahead, snorted coldly, his tone full of disdain and impatience, "Teacher Lin, please don't mind him, this kid isn't mute, he's just trying to spite me."

He started nagging again: "Today I asked her to work in the fields, but she sneaked off. I caught her on my way to pick you up, and she was sulking the whole way."

Upon hearing this, Lin Huaixu glanced at the girl beside him again but did not reply.

Qi Rongguang didn't mind. He couldn't stay still, so he started chatting about everyday things again, "Teacher Lin, how old are you today? You look so young, who would have thought you'd be teaching already?"

Lin Huaixu replied softly, "I'm twenty-four."

"Twenty-four?" Qi Rongguang asked. "How old are your children? You've come all this way, do you think your wife will be happy about it?"

Lin Huaixu pursed his lips. "I'm not married yet."

"Mom, you're so old and still not married? In our village, twenty-four-year-olds are everywhere, they can already call their grandparents 'Grandpa' and 'Grandma.' You're not bad-looking, so why can't you find a wife?"

Lin Huaixu didn't know how to answer this question. He hesitated for a moment, then said, "I'm not considering this for now."

"Alright, alright." Qi Rongguang clicked his tongue twice, his tone carrying an inscrutable emotion. "I don't understand you city people. My daughter is already nineteen this year, only a few years younger than you, and she's almost ready to get married."

Lin Huaixu was slightly taken aback, somewhat surprised by the girl's age.

She was petite, and although her face was not clearly visible, her features were youthful and innocent. He had thought the girl was only sixteen or seventeen years old, but he hadn't expected her to be nineteen.

Lin Huaixu asked softly, with a hint of gentle doubt, "Nineteen years old, are you in school?"

Before Qi Yang could reply, Qi Rongguang let out a cold, sneer, his laughter rough, "What's the point of a girl going to school!"

"I stopped studying a long time ago." His tone was clearly matter-of-fact. "What's the use of a girl going to school? It's better to go work in the fields for me, find a husband, and earn some dowry money."

As he spoke, he recalled what had happened that morning, and his anger flared up again. He berated his daughter mercilessly behind him: "You lazy brat, always slacking off! I bet you'll be disliked by your husband's family when you get married. And if they mistreat you, you'll have no choice but to accept it!"
