Chapter 14 Jiang Lai was unexpectedly saved by the river.

When we came out of the mansion, it was completely dark. The entire city of Shanghai was shrouded in a dazzling array of lights, as if it were covered with a layer of flowing starlight.

Having exhausted himself last night and spent most of today running around, attending classes and looking at houses, Han Tao was starving.

He glanced at the time and decided to find a restaurant he had always been reluctant to go to and treat himself to a good meal.

As my thoughts wandered, I suddenly remembered that there were several nice restaurants near the Huangpu River promenade, and the night view was absolutely stunning.

With that thought in mind, he no longer hesitated and drove away from Fuxing Road. Instead of choosing a bustling commercial area or restaurant, he drove slowly along the riverside road along the Huangpu River.

He planned to find a distinctive restaurant or private kitchen by the river, enjoy the river view while dining, and steal a moment of comfort.

There are many viewing platforms and railings along the riverside road. At this time, many citizens taking a stroll and tourists stop here, their figures moving back and forth in the twilight and lights.

The traffic moved slowly, and Han Tao followed the flow at a steady pace, his gaze casually sweeping over the river view outside the window.

As he passed a riverside viewing area, his gaze suddenly stopped. Not far ahead, by the river railing, stood a woman quietly.

The person had their back to the road, and their slender figure and bright red outfit made them stand out in the night.

The main thing was that she was shrouded in an aura of decadence and despair. Most of her body was already sticking out of the cold metal railing, and her toes were slightly raised, as if she was about to jump into the river.

Several passersby noticed something amiss and stopped in their tracks. Some whispered amongst themselves, others took out their phones, but no one dared to approach.

After all, nobody wants to cause trouble, and you can tell from the woman's expression that her emotions are extremely unstable.

If I were to approach her rashly, I might only provoke her, potentially leading to an irreparable tragedy and getting myself into trouble.

"Oh no!" Han Tao's heart tightened. Without thinking, he reacted quickly with his hands.

He jerked the steering wheel, swerved the car into the emergency lane, pulled the handbrake, opened the door, and strode out.

Human life is at stake; there is no room for hesitation. Just then, a kind-hearted auntie called out from behind the woman:

"Young lady! You're so young, please don't do anything foolish! Let's talk about your difficulties slowly!"

But the woman seemed not to hear anything. Her center of gravity shifted completely forward, and she suddenly lunged forward, sliding through the gap in the railing and plummeting straight into the dark river!

In the blink of an eye, Han Tao pounced, his right arm swiftly reaching out to firmly grasp the woman's slender wrist at the last moment.

A tremendous downward force suddenly came, and he instinctively tensed his waist and abdomen, unleashing all his strength to drag the suspended figure back inch by inch.

"Get up here!" Han Tao gritted his teeth and let out a low growl, veins bulging on his arms, as he pulled backward with all his might.

"Ah..." The woman cried out in surprise, her body suddenly plummeting, but she was pulled back by a strong force.

She lost her balance and fell backward, landing squarely in Han Tao's arms. The scent of perfume mixed with a faint smell of alcohol hit him, making him wince.

"Let go...let me die!" Her hoarse cries were filled with despair as she writhed wildly, her emotions completely broken.

Han Tao's arms held her firmly in place like iron hoops, preventing her from rushing towards the railing again: "Calm down! Nothing is more important than your life!"

The onlookers who had gathered around breathed a sigh of relief. The chaotic scene finally calmed down a little.

"What does it matter to you whether I live or die, you filthy scoundrel! Let me go!" The woman was still struggling violently, her emotions running high and she could hardly control herself.

"Whether you live or die is not important, but dying like this is so inconsiderate. Who will dare to come to this observation deck in the future?"

Han Tao didn't let go, nor did he utter a single kind word. He despised people like that the most—those who weren't afraid of death but were afraid of living.

The woman was stunned upon hearing this. She was the daughter of the Jiang Group, pampered since childhood. Even if she jumped into the river, it would still make headlines.

Turns out, this jerk was concerned about whether people had any sense of public morality and worried that the observation deck wasn't clean!

Anger erupted like a volcano, instantly overwhelming all his sorrow and despair. He couldn't help but shout viciously, "Get out! Let go of my hand, I'm not jumping anymore!"

Han Tao didn't let go immediately. Only when her struggles gradually weakened did he slowly loosen his grip and look at her face.

Upon seeing him, he was stunned. His exquisite and bright features, his arrogant and flamboyant eyebrows and eyes, even in his current disheveled state, could not conceal the dazzling aura in his bones.

"Jiang Lai!" Han Tao suddenly recalled the scene from last night, as well as the neatly stacked stack of cash on his bedside table this morning.

He found it amusing at the time, thinking that if he ran into her again, he would definitely teach this heartless woman who turned her back on him a lesson.

But to his utter surprise, less than a day later, he ran into her on the banks of the Huangpu River and unexpectedly saved her life.

Jiang Lai wiped her face haphazardly with the back of her hand, and when she looked up, she was frozen in place.

The sadness, despair, dejection, and anger that had just been felt froze instantly, turning into astonishment, embarrassment, and a hint of barely perceptible doubt.

She never imagined that at her most wretched, most miserable, and even resigned to death moment, the one who reached out and pulled her back was the man she had a one-night stand with just the night before.

When she woke up in the morning, she left three thousand yuan in cash on the bedside table and left the hotel, just to cut ties cleanly and have nothing to lose.

But who could have imagined that fate would play such an absurd joke on him?

Passersby continued to stand and watch, pointing and whispering. Their gazes felt like needles pricking her, making Jiang Lai, who was already embarrassed, even more helpless.

Suddenly, something occurred to her, and her expression darkened. Her red lips tightened, and a clear mockery and disdain surfaced in her eyes: "What are you doing here?"

"This isn't your own kang (heated brick bed), why can't I be here?" Han Tao didn't intend to be polite; his tone was calm but carried a hint of sharpness.

"But you, young lady, instead of going home to sleep, you ran to the riverbank to jump in? Did you think jumping in would solve your problem?"

Jiang Lai's defiant eyes were filled with wariness and disdain. She looked Han Tao up and down, then suddenly sneered:

"Don't change the subject. If I'm not mistaken, you've been following me, haven't you?"

You can't judge a book by its cover. I never expected you to look so respectable, but you're actually quite cunning.

"You're just being presumptuous!" Han Tao raised an eyebrow, his face showing disdain. "You've watched too many suspense dramas, have they ruined your brain? I was just passing by on my way out to eat and happened to save you."

"A coincidence?" Jiang Lai scoffed, crossing her arms over her chest, her tone growing increasingly sharp, each word laced with barbs:

"Stop acting. My Jiang family has some standing in Shanghai. You pretended to bump into her at the bar last night, and now you're putting on a hero-saves-the-damsel-in-distress act."

"Isn't he just trying to win my favor? Isn't he just trying to use me to climb the social ladder and become the Jiang family's son-in-law?"

It's human nature to watch a spectacle, and the passersby around, upon hearing such explosive words, immediately had subtle changes in their expressions.
