The Witcher: Grinding Experience Starting as a Wolf School Witcher
Chapter 49 Baihe Town
"Da da da!"
The mare, tethered by a rope, walked in front.
But Alwin didn't make the mare exert much effort; she pulled heavily on the cart shaft with both hands.
This is a riding horse, a warhorse, not an ordinary steed. If it gets injured while pulling this cart of timber, it would be a great loss.
The voice of a timber merchant came from behind, complaining as he pushed his cart.
"This messed up world is unbearable."
"Let me tell you, the marquises of the four major territories have ordered the reclamation of land, which is an exciting thing, but those stingy nobles only give a few coins for every inch of land they reclaim. It's barely enough to sleep in a brothel for one night."
"There are more and more monsters in the forest. I heard that a shoemaker's village is haunted at night."
"And those wretched elves, who are always shooting arrows at us from the shadows. God should let them all be infected with the plague."
Alwin listened carefully. Exploring the wilderness—it's fair to say that the human race's prolific talent is simply too overpowered.
Monsters like kobolds, who live in mines and forests, will likely become extinct soon due to the extreme compression of their living environment.
After a brief recollection, I don't recall ever hearing about kobolds in The Witcher games.
"Ah, esteemed Witcher, I still don't know how to address you."
"Ah..." Arwen murmured, glancing out of the corner of his eye at the raven resting on his shoulder. "Raven, you can call me Raven."
"Oh," the timber merchant said, unsurprised. "Raven, hey, those knights and nobles all have titles, who says witchers can't?"
"Mr. Raven, do you know Gerald? I have a shipment to send to Mount Podkurek in three months. There's a witcher there with white hair who looks like a demon."
Gerald? White hair?
Alwin curled his lip, inwardly surprised.
"That's Geralt with white hair, isn't it?"
"Three months ago? Geralt is still in Cordwin? Wasn't he supposed to be going to the beach? Why is he still in Cordwin?"
Although that's what he thought, he said aloud, "Not familiar with them."
"Okay, I thought you two knew each other."
The two men and one horse walked past a dense grove of trees, the country path rounded a bend, and suddenly the view opened up.
The primeval forest behind us has been replaced by rows of felled tree stumps, and the air is filled with the smell of damp wood chips.
"Mr. Raven, look, Baihe Town is just ahead."
The timber merchant pointed ahead.
Alwin looked up; at the end of the country lane was a small town surrounded by a huge wooden fence.
Rows of houses sit close together, their gray bricks and tiles forming a continuous expanse.
In the center of the town stands a two-story stone castle.
With the power of [Dual Soul] activated, a quick visual estimate revealed that, apart from the castle, Baihe Town had approximately five hundred houses and at least several thousand people.
It is indeed unique within a baronial territory.
The two quickened their pace, the bright sun high in the sky, making their foreheads glisten with sweat.
Baihe Town is situated beside a tributary of the Baishi River, which in turn serves as a natural moat for the town.
The winding river shimmered in the sunlight, and its banks were covered with cattails.
To enter the town, you must cross the suspension bridge in front of the gate.
However, it is clearly noon now, but Baihe Town is closed and no one is seen coming or going, which is very abnormal.
Five soldiers with halberds stood on either side of the suspension bridge, wearing rough leather armor, which at first glance was probably made of cowhide.
Furthermore, he noticed that the soldiers' expressions were strange; they weren't drowsy at midday, but rather deeply tired.
And closing the door in broad daylight is very strange; Alwin secretly became alert.
The soldiers noticed the two men and immediately stepped forward with their halberds, shouting in low voices.
"Travelers, halt!"
Arwen gestured to the timber merchant beside him, who smiled and walked over.
"Oh, gentlemen, it's me, Theodore Reed. I know your captain very well; he's my brother-in-law."
"Theodore Reed?"
A rough voice rang out from behind the soldiers.
Metal boots creaked as they stepped onto the suspension bridge, and a tall, muscular man emerged.
He was wearing armor, had short brown hair, looked to be in his thirties, and had deep-set features. His breastplate was engraved with a coat of arms, the upper part of which depicted a black unicorn, and the lower part depicted a river.
Arwin's gaze narrowed slightly; he had seen the book on heraldry in Kael'thas's library.
The unicorn represents Cordwin, and the river below should belong to the Baron of the White River.
"Damn it, Martin, you've been wearing this for months!"
"Ha, I fought the elves for two months and killed two of them. The Baron promoted me to captain."
"Oh, this is so exciting! My sister and nephews will be thrilled."
"Of course, I'm very happy to see you."
"Me too."
The two embraced, and then Sergeant Martin turned around and addressed the soldiers in a loud voice.
"What are you still doing with that halberd upright? Are you blind? Put it down!"
Upon hearing this, the soldiers put down their halberds and secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
The timber merchant noticed this and whispered, "What's going on in White River Town? Have the elves attacked here? It wasn't this serious when I was here last time."
Sergeant Martin, his right hand resting on the hilt of his sword, sighed, "Ah, if only it were an elf. It's a monster, a monster that kills without blinking an eye at night!"
The timber merchant's eyes widened, and his gaze instinctively drifted backward.
"Let's go inside and talk slowly, oh...
Martin was halfway through his sentence when his gaze followed the timber merchant's line of sight, and his pupils contracted.
In my line of sight, a tall man stood beside the carriage, his face hidden by a hood, and a leather jacket studded with silver embellishments visible through his open cloak.
A raven perched on its shoulder, and the massive sword slung diagonally across its back was undoubtedly heavy; anyone who could wield it must possess extraordinary strength, making it a truly eye-catching sight.
Martin looked serious. "Theodore, this shouldn't be one of your hired helpers, right?"
The timber merchant tried to explain, but Alwin strode forward.
"You just said there are monsters here?"
"That's right."
The man in the black robe raised his head, revealing his face beneath the hood, his gray vertical pupils showing interest.
Martin instinctively gasped, a chill running down his spine.
Upon seeing this, the halberd-wielding soldiers behind him screamed loudly, waving their arms and pointing their halberds at Alwin's position.
"A monster...a monster!"
"Monsters are coming! Protect the captain!"
"Kill him! Kill him!"
The timber merchant was startled and cried out, spreading his arms wide, "Misunderstanding! Misunderstanding!"
"Martin, you need to calm them down."
Martin saw the wolf head badge hanging on Alwin's chest, immediately roared at the soldiers behind him, and reached out to press down the nearest halberd.
"What are you all doing? Put your weapons away!"
"Captain, look at his face! It's as white as birch bark, and his eyes are vertical—he's a vampire! He killed so many of us last night!"
The soldier retorted.
Upon hearing this, Alwin's lips twitched slightly.
What the hell is a vampire? But to be honest, if it had a pair of red vertical pupils, it would actually look quite convincing.
"Enough, you bunch of ignorant fools! They're witchers!"
"If you keep making such a fuss, I'll shove a halberd up your ass!"
"A...a Witcher!?"
The soldiers exchanged glances, scrutinizing Alwin's face, their panic undiminished.
Martin reassured the soldiers, then turned and strode quickly toward Alwin.
He rubbed his hands together, his voice filled with excitement.
"Hey buddy, don't bother with these country bumpkins. White River Town welcomes you. We're in dire need of a reliable witcher."
