Chapter 98 First Preseason Win
Adelman exclaims "Too fast!" after his first preseason win.
The Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento is filled with the sweet smell of popcorn and carbonated drinks.
The first preseason game hadn't even started yet, but the atmosphere on the sidelines was already incredibly heated. Kings head coach Rick Adelman sat on the bench, twirling a tactical pen in his hand, his brow furrowed in deep thought.
Opposite him was the Golden State Warriors, a team that had just undergone a major overhaul.
Lin Hao, Gary Payton, Richardson, Arenas...
This group of people, no matter how you look at them, don't seem like the type to play basketball peacefully.
"Rick," the assistant coach handed over a data packet, "the Warriors' offensive efficiency during preseason training camp is frighteningly high. Their 'seven-second offense' averages only 6.8 seconds per possession. This is simply defying the common sense of basketball."
Adelman took the report, glanced at it, and scoffed, "Seven seconds? That's track and field, not basketball. Without a solid half-court offense, we'll be torn to shreds in the playoffs."
He looked up and met Lin Hao's gaze.
The Chinese boy was playing with a can of yellow peaches. When he saw him looking over, he grinned, revealing a set of white teeth.
Adelman felt inexplicably irritated.
"Beep—"
The referee's whistle broke the noise in the stadium.
Game start.
In the jump ball, Sacramento Kings center Vlade Divac easily passed the ball to Mike Bibby.
Bibby dribbled the ball up the court at a leisurely pace, just past the center line, preparing to set up for the Princeton offense.
At that very moment, a sudden change occurred.
Lin Hao, like a black lightning bolt, rushed directly from the backcourt, not to defend Bibby, but to cut off Divac's passing route to Stojakovic!
"Snapped!"
A clean and decisive steal!
Lin Hao stole the basketball, and without even pausing, he charged towards the Kings' basket like an out-of-control tank.
Payton had already sprinted to the frontcourt like a ghost. Lin Hao tossed the ball with one hand, and it flew through the air in a very high arc.
Payton received the ball and easily scored a layup.
0.8 seconds.
From stealing the ball to scoring, it only took 0.8 seconds in total.
The scoreboard flashed a glaring 2-0.
Adelman's tactical pen fell to the ground with a "thud".
"My God..." the Kings fans in the stadium exclaimed.
This isn't playing ball; this is robbery!
After landing, Lin Hao didn't even celebrate. He just ran back to the backfield and shouted to Payton, "Uncle Glove, run faster next time! I passed it too high!"
Peyton replied breathlessly, "You spread the word too fast, kid! I wasn't ready yet!"
The rest of the game turned into a one-sided massacre by the Warriors.
Lin Hao dribbled the ball up the court, no longer slowly crossing half-court like a traditional point guard. He sprinted like he was participating in a 100-meter dash, sending the ball flying as soon as he crossed the center line.
The ball is passed to Richardson on the left wing, who catches it and shoots.
"Whoosh!"
The ball was passed to Percy on the right wing, and Percy raised his hand and fired.
"Whoosh!"
For Murphy in the bottom corner, Murphy doesn't even need to adjust his footwork.
"Whoosh!"
The Kings' defenders were completely bewildered. They were used to running after the ball and after the players, but they had never seen this style of play before—the ball was faster than the players, and the players were more aggressive than the ball.
Stojakovic was unable to receive the ball due to Lin Hao's defense. When he finally did receive the ball, Lin Hao stuck to him like a leech, making it impossible for him to shoot.
Bibby attempted to break through, but Lin Hao swung his long arm and directly cut off his dribble.
"Snapped!"
Another steal!
Lin Hao launched a counterattack with the ball, and this time he chose to take the lead himself.
He only dribbled the ball three times from the backcourt to the frontcourt.
Upon reaching the three-point line, facing Brad Miller who was helping to defend, Lin Hao did not slow down but jumped directly.
Lean back and drift.
The basketball traced a very high rainbow in the air.
"Whoosh!"
Hollow into the network!
15-4.
The difference in points quickly widened to double digits.
Adelman was frantically yelling and waving a towel on the sidelines, but to no avail. His Princeton offense emphasizes passing and cuts, rhythm and aesthetics. But against the Warriors' relentless, run-and-gun style, the rhythm was shattered, and the aesthetics turned into a mess.
In the second quarter, the Warriors brought in their bench players, but the pace of the game did not slow down at all.
Arenas, a sophomore, displayed astonishing speed. He darted in and out of the Kings' defense like a startled rabbit.
Lin Hao sat on the sidelines resting, holding a tactical board in his hand, constantly gesturing to Payton on the court.
"Gary, attack from both sides! Attack from both sides!"
Although Payton complained that "this pace is too damn fast," his body language betrayed him. After all, he is a veteran, and once he adapted to this pace, the rapid passing and control actually brought back the feeling of his youth.
"Bang!"
Payton made a successful interception and launched a long pass into the attacking third.
Arenas receives the ball, goes for a layup, and scores.
