My Abyss Survival Diary
Chapter 110 Facing the Truth
Chapter 110 Facing the Truth
Night falls from overhead in the Beast Hunting Garden.
One by one, the giant, glowing spores on the dome went out, their color slowly fading to grayish-white, until they finally lost all their luster and fell softly from the dome.
Simon crouched behind a slope, a harpoon across his knees, the hissing of the joints of his steam armor echoing behind him. A sand badger was burrowing into the captured fanatic armor. Elder Chalasu bent over, staring at the ventilation holes on the back of the armor. Lin Ying crouched beside him, idly sharpening his dagger, his gaze fixed on his sister.
"Remember to be careful about depressurization during the battle," Elder Chalasu reminded his granddaughter without looking up. "Don't overheat during the battle, or the armor will burn your skin."
"That's enough." The sand badger patted its shoulder armor and made a face at the forest eagle. "I'm just bait; as long as the bait runs fast, that's fine."
Simon tapped on the rivets on the breastplate of the armor and reminded him again, "You don't need to beat anyone. Just let them see you, then run away. They will leave the camp to chase you, and another team will enter the camp from the back and bring all the hostages out."
"Understood!" The sand badger gave a thumbs-up as it operated the mechanical arm of the armor.
With his armor ready, Simon turned and walked toward the nun.
Sister Sissi sat on a rock, the Holy Hammer standing at her feet. Her white hair was tied up in a tight bun, a few stray strands damp with sweat, clinging to her pale cheekbones.
"Thinking about your sisters again?" Simon asked, sitting down beside her.
"Yes." The nun did not deny it. She blinked, the horrific scene of mountains of corpses and seas of blood still seemed to be before her eyes. "I will never forget that day, I will never forget their tragic deaths."
She slowly clenched her fist, her eyes gradually hardening.
"Therefore, I will shoulder their heavy responsibility, fulfill their last wish, and bring back that piece of flesh that is evidence of their guilt."
Simon nodded with satisfaction; it seemed her mental state had indeed improved considerably.
Just then, Brenée's voice came from inside the birdcage.
"Simon————"
Her voice was still soft and sweet, with a lazy ending tone, but today it was hoarser and pitifully softer than usual.
Simon took the birdcage off his backpack and held it in front of him.
Breanne's eyes were open, and even though she was just a head, she was still incredibly beautiful. The curve of her brow bone, the line of her nose, and the shape of her lips were like a stunning sculpture carved with the utmost devotion by some religion.
Her skin was pale, like fine bone china, delicate and noble, and her deep black hair looked like silk stained with spilled ink.
"Why have you been sleeping for so long?"
"I don't know either." Brienne said with some frustration, "When I saw that knob, some forgotten fragments of memory suddenly pierced my brain. You saw it too, didn't you?"
Simon still remembers that unfamiliar room, the incubation chamber, and that mysterious dark figure.
"That's right, those fragments of memory are related to your past?"
This time, Brienne did not answer his question directly.
"Do you remember you promised me you'd help me find out about my origins and my past memories?"
"I remember," he nodded.
Breanne closed her eyes, and a glowing spore landed on the cage bars, lingering for a moment.
"When I was asleep, those fragments resurfaced in my mind." Her voice grew softer and softer, and her eyes became slightly unfocused. "Those fragments can't be pieced together completely, but the small part that is pieced together is terrifying enough, so terrifying that I suddenly felt that maybe some things should never have been remembered in the first place."
Are you scared?
"Yes." She didn't deny it. "I still prefer lighthearted things, things that make people laugh."
Suddenly, the corners of her mouth turned up in a smile that was weary, self-deprecating, and hardened by fear.
"I thought I used to live under the sun, had my own farm, and was happy every day. Those memories are worth remembering."
"But what if I used to be a demon? What if I was the kind of thing that wakes up at the ends of the earth, the kind that burns everything to ashes, the kind that's ugly, twisted, and drives everyone who sees it crazy?"
No one spoke. In the distance, Charasu closed the clasp of his breastplate, and the sand badger finished his final stretch.
Simon remained silent for a long time before slowly speaking: "If you truly are an evil spirit, I will kill you. No matter where you are, no matter how strong or terrifying you become, I will find you and plunge a harpoon into your heart—"
Breanne did not look away.
"But what if it's another possibility? If you are the hope that the shadow speaks of, the one that might save the world, then I will do everything in my power to help you." Simon looked at her earnestly. "So face the truth. Some things are simply unavoidable."
The shadowy figure in front of the cultivation chamber once said, "You might save all of this, or you might—destroy it all."
This means that another possibility still exists.
Brienne was stunned for a long time, then she smiled.
A weary smile graced her beautiful face; fear was gone, replaced by a strange sense of relief, as if a heavy burden had been lifted from her shoulders.
"If that day ever comes, Simon, I hope it's you—"
"I wish you were the one to kill me."
Simon hung the birdcage back on the side of his backpack.
As the last spore on the dome went out, darkness swept in, and the glowing spores in the flower field became the only source of light, drifting slowly in the night sky like countless souls that refused to be extinguished.
Night finally fell on the second level, which was the perfect time for them to make their move.
Simon stood up, holding the harpoon in his hand.
"The tactics are simple! The Sand Badgers in their armor will draw attention from the front. Once the Zealots' armor leaves the camp, another team will enter from the rear to rescue the hostages. Our goal isn't to win, but to get those people out alive!"
The badger lowered the visor of its helmet, and two plumes of white mist shot out from the heat dissipation vents of the armor, accompanied by a low hiss. Elder Chalasu rubbed his hands together, his burly body like a wall. Lin Ying held a spear, and Flani's twin pistols swayed gently at her waist.
The nun lifted the holy hammer from the ground and hoisted it onto her shoulder. Her hand gripped Simon's wrist, lingering there longer than ever before.
"Take care of yourself," Simon whispered a reminder.
"The same to you."
He faced the distant darkness, towards the direction of the Friendly Camp, where three fanatics in steam armor patrolled behind the fence, and countless hostages awaited their rescue.
They were all waiting for him.
Simon gripped the harpoon tightly, the hemp rope on the handle digging into his palm, conforming to the shape of his palm lines.
"Let's take action!"
