Chapter 8: I inexplicably owed someone a favor
The Sorcerer Supreme reminded Salomon more than once.
"You are a spellcaster who has stolen the power of Vishanti," the Venerable said. "So do not call out the name of Vishanti so casually, especially before you acquire all the rings."
"By Vishanti..." the young monk muttered to himself, "We've gotten ourselves into big trouble."
While suppressing these spirits, Amoji Tutel also used them as weapons, commanding these deformed, enormous, and densely packed spirits to rush forward using the magic on her ring.
The young mage tried to swat his fists to scare them away, but it was all in vain. His fists always passed right through the spirits, yielding nothing but a cold, viscous touch. If it weren't for the spells attached to him, the young mage would already be possessed or have his soul devoured by the spirits, and the positive energy rays that Salomon shot from his fingertips couldn't stop the spirits from getting closer either.
"What should we do?" Master Wang shouted.
"I don't know either..." Salomon was sweating profusely, admitting that he had underestimated the guardian of the British Museum. This guardian could use the Vishanti Ring openly, while Salomon could only secretly obtain magic power; the two were simply incomparable in terms of magical output.
Suddenly, as if a venomous snake were coiled around his neck, a soft, cold sensation came from behind Salomon. He felt a pair of warm hands caress his cheeks, and as if the night had arrived with the flapping of an owl's wings, Salomon lost his sight.
"Call my name, son of man." A gentle voice whispered in Salomon's ear, "I am the rain, I am the clear sky, I am the spring thunder, I am the goddess of cities, the goddess of birds and snakes, I will be your shield and your spear."
Salomon calmed down; his education had taught him who this person was.
"Hail you, Tritoglea, radiant as a serpent, a dragon of a thousand forms [Note: Tritoglea is the third born], I offer you olive oil, figs, and a woolen robe," Salomon said sincerely, "in the name of the goddess who holds the golden spear."
"In the name of Aetheria (the goddess of the sky)!" With Salomon's voice, the divine power involved in all the collections of the British Museum surged, like boiling water. Master Wang stared in disbelief at the scene before him.
A girl made of divine power appeared behind Salomon. She wore a Greek Arcadian helmet, held a spear and a huge round shield, and was only slightly shorter than the ceiling. Salomon saw nothing; he simply followed the voice's instructions, each prayer sounding like a bronze spear striking the round shield.
"In the name of Anemotes (the wind goddess)!"
"In the name of Gorgofona (the goddess who slays the Gorgons)!"
"In the name of Parthenos (the virgin goddess)!"
"I command you! Stay away from this world!"
The girl behind Salomon stretched out her palm, and the surging divine power shattered these spirits, while also releasing the shackles that had bound them for so long.
Amoji Tutel couldn't believe what she was seeing. In her eyes, she was a guardian who silently protected this world. Since her great-great-great-grandfather, they had been protecting this place. This responsibility tormented them, but it also made them proud. Protecting these spirits was the mission of the Tutel family, all because of the infinite power of this ring...
"Hurry!" The darkness dissipated, and Salomon regained his sight, but before he could even open his eyes, he shouted to the mage, "Remove her ring!"
Having lost her spirit, Amoji Tutel knew nothing about fighting. She had never received any magical education and had never even practiced the most basic protective spells. After the young mage reacted, he rushed forward. The elderly Amoji Tutel was powerless to resist, and the young mage easily grabbed her hand and tore off the ring.
"Ahhh! My ring!" After the ring was removed, Amoji Tutel was no longer invisible. Her clothes were tattered, and her messy white short hair made her look a bit like an old madwoman.
Salomon quickly grabbed Little Wang's hand and ran out of the museum. A small white snake silently and swiftly crawled up Salomon's leg, burrowed into his clothes, and finally wrapped around his arm with a cool touch.
"Are you alright, ma'am?" a tourist asked as he approached.
"What are you looking at? You can't see me!" The magic left her, no longer supporting her brain. Amoji Tutel's nerves began to age, and her already wrinkled skin shrank even more.
To others, she was talking nonsense.
"I am the Guardian! I am the only one who can stop you from being destroyed!" Amoji Tuttel began to shout, her eyes flashing with madness. She kept yelling at the people around her, trying to prove that she was a saint who lived on the sins of others.
However, some tourists had already taken out their phones and called the police.
Master Wang and Salomon stood on the street, both panting. Master Wang patted his broad chest and said, "You're really something, Salomon."
"That would be best, senior brother." Salomon rolled up his sleeves and looked at the small snake sleeping peacefully on his forearm. "There's a price to pay for all of this."
Salomon knew perfectly well that Athena had appeared on her own without him calling her name... Hadn't the Greek pantheon long since left Earth? He had to ask the Sorcerer Supreme for clarification, or he wouldn't be able to put his mind at ease.
"Alright, where do we go next?" The young monk, still shaken, grinned and asked, "Any more adventures?"
"I think we need a day of rest, senior brother." Salomon gestured for the young mage to put the ring in his pocket. "Let's go back to Kamar-Taj."
Because Amoji Tuttel had added many things to this new ring that shouldn't have been there, such as long fake nails, Salomon gave the ring to the Sorcerer Supreme to help modify it and make it a normal ring—after all, many artifacts in Kamar-Taj were made by the Sorcerer Supreme, so this shouldn't be too much of a problem.
But that wasn't Salomon's main purpose.
When the Sorcerer Supreme saw the snake coiled around Salomon's forearm, she signaled for Salomon to calm down.
"The Celestials haven't always been watching Earth. I've already told you why the new gods left." The Sorcerer Supreme poured two cups of tea. "But I also never said they wouldn't secretly return. Now, there's not only Athena on Earth, but also Hecate and others."
"All of them?" Salomon's eyes widened in surprise.
"Of course not all of them. After all, it would be a bit crowded for so many new gods to stay on Earth. Besides, it's not an era of worshipping gods anymore. Modern humans value science, and even if gods appeared in front of them, they would only think about how to capture and dissect them."
Of course, I don't dislike this phenomenon. After all, magic only blossoms in the souls of a few, and only technology is the future of humanity. The Venerable pushed a cup of tea in front of Salomon, who drank it all in one gulp. The fatigue from casting spells disappeared as if the dirt on leaves had been washed away by the early summer rain.
"Some have returned, but I suggest you visit this one after you've acquired all three rings." The Sorcerer Supreme pointed to the small snake lazily crawling on the table. Surprisingly, both Salomon and the Sorcerer Supreme could see an expression on the snake's face—it sounds strange, but it's true. Right now, the snake's expression was probably something like, "Whatever," or "Do whatever you want, just leave me alone."
It barely managed to lift its eyelids, looked at Salomon, then at the Sorcerer Supreme, before opening its mouth wide and attempting to swallow an orange from the table.
"It looks pretty good." The Venerable One said with a relaxed expression, "I don't know when this goddess of wisdom will come to you, but I think it shouldn't be too bad. After all, this is the first time I've seen a snake eating fruit. This is real life, not a game."
"But... I've never been a guest of the gods before... What gift should I bring? Olive oil, figs, or a wool sweater?"
"It's the 21st century, Salomon," the Supreme Master said with a look of disdain. "Don't be so old-fashioned. A bottle of wine or skincare products would be a good gift when visiting someone's home."
Salomon, carrying the small snake that had just stuffed an orange into its mouth, left the Sorcerer Supreme's meditation room. From a distance, he looked like he was carrying a ball attached to a rope.
