Chapter 63 Taking Care of Children

Chapter 63 Taking Care of Children

"Hello, little one." Salomon, carrying snacks, passed through the portal and saw a little girl in a pink nightgown with two braids peeking into the portal. Her short legs, which had been trembling before, were now standing very steadily.

Clearly, she was familiar with this thing and didn't show much surprise.

In her little mind, this round, warm-glowing contraption that could produce a person was very similar to the thing that had brought her, only not as bright, but she still thought it was the same thing. When Salomon stepped out of the portal, the little girl visibly slumped down, because the person in front of her was not the one she had been hoping for.

She kept her head down, tapping the ground with the round toes of her shoes in a sullen mood, and even Salomon's greeting couldn't make her look up.

"Uh... I was sent by that woman." Salomon pointed to Bayonetta, who was confronting the angel in front of him.

"Keep an eye on that little one!" the witch shouted without turning her head, seemingly very confident in Salomon's ability to care for children.

"Mommy!" The little girl looked up and said in a soft, sweet voice, "Big brother, are you someone Mommy asked to come and take care of me?"

Mommy? When did Bayonetta have a child? Judging from the little girl's appearance, it must have happened in the last few years!

Salomon was incredibly embarrassed, not only because he was captivated by Bayonetta's fighting prowess, but also because he had absolutely no experience caring for children. He had never encountered a little one who was only as tall as his thigh before; the children from the mage families who came to Kamar-Taj headquarters for training were at least as tall as Salomon. The arcane mage, holding a pile of snacks, kept turning his free hand around, trying to explain something.

"Mommy's leaving me again?" The little girl looked at Bayonetta with tears in her big eyes, then turned to Salomon. She looked up, tears streaming down her still chubby cheeks. "Please, big brother, don't let Mommy leave me..."

"That's not it, little one." Salomon's heart softened instantly. Who could remain unmoved by such a little girl? He knelt down cooperatively and said to the little one, "Your mother will come to keep you company after she's dealt with that guy. I'm just here to protect you from harm."

Having ascertained the angel's rank, Salomon knew this enemy posed no threat to Bayonetta. Therefore, he was quite happy to tell the little girl this in a lighthearted tone, saying, "That monster is no match for your mother."

"Then...we'll be alright, right?" the little girl asked timidly.

"Of course, of course," Salomon nodded quickly.

"But, the Cheshire Cat..."

"The Cheshire Cat?" Salomon followed the little girl's finger to the tattered doll lying to the side. "That...that doll is yours?"

"Yes! Cheshire is my friend!" the little girl replied, "but they want to hurt Cheshire..."

"OK, OK, it's back." With a simple little magic trick, the doll flew into Salomon's hands. He stuffed a bag of chips, some candy, and the doll into the little girl's arms. "Now, it's your friend again. Come with me, little one, you'll get hurt here."

"It seems you don't intend to harm that little girl? What's your purpose in summoning me here?" Bayonetta asked the angel. At that moment, Salomon noticed a portal not far behind him—he immediately deduced it was a trap, a trap specifically prepared for Bayonetta! But what could a little girl possibly do? Take her hostage?

Nevertheless, Salomon remained slightly wary, both of the place and the little girl, and he never turned his back on her again. At the same time, Salomon also strained his ears, ready to hear what information the angel might reveal.

"I must become the cornerstone of the resurrected God." The angel's tone remained as calm as ever; it seemed to only utter these meaningless words.

"Come on! Let's dance!" Bayonetta's longsword once again flared with purple magical flames, and the witch pounced on the angel, launching an attack.

The witch's initial swings were blocked by the angel Ardor, the clash of swords producing a piercing sound. However, Bayonetta seized an opening with incredible speed and power, striking the golden-red armor with her longsword. But even the sword could not leave a scratch on the armor; each of the witch's attacks only sent up large bursts of sparks.

Bayonetta was not disappointed; on the contrary, she became happy.

The previous enemies were too weak to have piqued her interest, but the Archangel before her, though lower in rank than the Archangel, was far more powerful than she had imagined. The witch licked her lips and said, "Looks like I'll be able to enjoy myself to the fullest!"

The deafening clang of clashing swords filled the entire rift valley, vibrating the air, and the nearby thunder rumbled even more frequently. Several exchanges ensued. Suddenly, a large cloud of dust billowed up from the battlefield.

The rising dust obscured the view of onlookers, and even Salomon, who had been so confident in Bayonetta, couldn't help but feel uneasy, let alone the little girl standing next to him.

"Mommy!" the little girl cried out worriedly. She hugged the plush toy even tighter, threw the snacks on the ground, and tears welled up in her eyes again, far more than when she had seen Salomon before.

"Step back a bit, little one." Salomon also dropped his burdens and stood diagonally in front of the little girl, two orange rings glowing in his hands. He said, "If you're unlucky, you'll have to run."

After the dust settled, the onlookers clearly saw that Bayonetta had used her longsword to block the golden blade of the Angel of Passion, successfully deflecting the attack unscathed, while the ground beneath her feet cracked from the immense force. Salomon breathed a slight sigh of relief; he hadn't wanted the witch to stumble in such a place. The little girl stopped crying and stared intently at Bayonetta, afraid she might get hurt again.

"So you really want to go against me?" Bayonetta's voice sounded like it was being squeezed out between clenched teeth. "Trying to steal my power or something." The ground beneath the witch's feet shattered into smaller fragments under her weight. She said, "What a naughty child. Looks like you need a severe punishment!"

"Good children should absolutely not listen to this!" Salomon quickly pointed at Bayonetta. "These aren't good words."

"Huh?" The little girl looked at the sorcerer with a puzzled expression.

Bayonetta suddenly leaped up, using her longsword as a fulcrum to dodge the angel's massive blade. Then, her feet struck the angel's beak with such force that even the Ardor angel staggered back, the ground behind it shattering beneath her weight. The witch's black leather armor concealed her longsword, and she reached behind her to pull out a massive, black and red chainsaw. The chainsaw's handle resembled a giant piranha, and the entire chain saw pulverized with the witch's power.

This chainsaw is also one of Rodin's works. It was forged from the material of the hell dragon Salamandra, and Rodin cast the hard dragon scales into serrations. The heart was made into an engine, and this powerful force gave the weapon unparalleled power.

"Come here! Come on! I'll make you feel amazing!" Bayonetta said. "Let's dance, baby!"

Salomon had already covered the little girl's ears.

"The glory of Jubilee is with me!" In response to the witch's provocation, the Ardor angel shouted and charged forward, but the witch leaped up to dodge its slash. Bayonetta, from her superior position, slashed the chainsaw down on the angel's head, the tiny golden teeth spinning rapidly and emitting brilliant sparks.

The witch cleaved down with unwavering cruelty, her incredibly sharp serrations slicing through the armor and flesh of the Ardor angel, cleaving the angel in two diagonally. The angel of death exploded into a burst of golden light, the violent blast even severing the end of the platform. Bayonetta stood before the broken pieces, slowly sheathing her weapon.

"Mommy! Mommy!" The little girl kept calling out as the battle ended.

"Phew!" Bayonetta covered her face as she slowly walked up to Salomon and the little girl. The little girl's expression changed instantly from crying to smiling as the witch approached, which made the sorcerer marvel at how quickly children's emotions could change.

"I think I did a pretty good job," the sorcerer said, spreading his hands. "I didn't hurt her. Also, when did you have a daughter?"

"This isn't my child, but I'd be somewhat interested in starting a family." The witch winked at Salomon before looking at the little girl. "Little one, what's your name?"

"Ceresa!" the little girl replied, "Have you forgotten, Mommy?"

"You probably won't remember it anymore, will you?" Bayonetta waved her hand. "Why are you in such a disgusting place? Even pumpkin carriages don't come here."

"My father told me that if I'm a good boy, my mother will come back for me," Ceresa said.

"He dumped you here?" Bayonetta asked in surprise. "Alone?"

Could this little girl be part of Baldr's trap? Whose child is this? Who is the father it speaks of? Salomon has unknowingly taken a big step toward the truth, but he doesn't interrupt, waiting for Ceresa to reveal more unknown details.

“I’m not alone, Cheshire is with me!” Ceressa retorted.

"You were so scared you cried, just like a little baby."

"Mom, let's go home!"

"How many times do I have to tell you, little one, I'm not your mother," the witch said. "Your father will be coming to take you back soon."

"As long as I'm with Mommy!" Ceresa hugged the doll and pressed it against Bayonetta's leg, looking like she wasn't going to let go anytime soon.

"This is such a headache." Bayonetta sighed helplessly. It seemed she'd be taking care of this little one for a while. She looked at Salomon, "Can you cook?"

"I find it a bit difficult, but I have magic that can solve this problem," Salomon asked. "What's wrong?"

The witch rolled her eyes and said, "Hurry up and open the portal."

"Where to?" Salomon didn't ask a stupid question like "Why not use that golden portal?" After all, no one would believe the enemy's magic.

"This is my house. You come too. I need to clean this little guy up first, and you can prepare the meals."

The sorcerer put on his swivel ring, preparing to cast a spell. "Alright, tell me the address."

"I think this feels just like a family!"

"Cough cough!" Salomon coughed loudly, and the sparks that appeared out of thin air disappeared instantly.

The witch was delighted by Salomon's reaction. "Hurry up," Bayonetta said, "I'm hungry. Remember to fry some salmon."
